Started making my own nautical maps.
I wanted to get some better maps of the contours of the oceans, depth maps specifically. Can't find anything of good quality online without being limited to small size. So I decided to start making maps for operational areas.
The work will be slow but I plan to knock out a few dozen. a little help from a cartography nut
This should help if you haven't discovered it on your own; Just finished reading the Great Cartographers - a useful tome in your endeavors!:salute: http://www.kartengruppe.it/index.php/nordmeer-deutsche-admiralitatskarten :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:Good work!:Kaleun_Salivating:awaiting great results! The one of San Francisco Bay (4' x 5') hangs on my mancave wall and is in my GPS Sailor IPOD which hangs in the gangway hatch when at sea-keeps the positional mapping paperwork down!:yep: Now if I can brain out the tacking on my new auto steerer to it, I can open a Hamm's!??:timeout:

Thanks for the positive feedback. I have been looking online for the actual charts they used, with depths. Alot of the materials online are blurry or non-existent. There are also terribly incomplete.
Was hoping we'd get more detail on the ingame map but oh well. The biggest thing I think that is missing is the depth contours. Where is that 100m and 200m line. The all important line of survival where the water gets deep enough to survive depth charged right? So finally decided to make my own and then sort of standardize the format of them. If you liked that last one I think you'll love the next one coming. Thanks much. |
I like that site. I just cant see anything on those maps. The quality of the images is too poor. You can't make out any depths at all. Major features yes, navigable features no.

Read me a single depth off that chart. Maybe I need my eyes tested. Last time around I was better than 20x20. It might be possible to make that chart large enough and then sharpen it but I dont think so.
See this as an example of what I'm making. http://i.imgur.com/w3N2DQZ.jpg I find it easier to read. |
Apologies Thought you were interested in the contour lines only and would imput depths as you liked. Actually in the movie Master and Commander, the captain uses a loupe to look at the chart details and I am using a 5" glass lens on a flex stand to examine my post map; The way to go here IMHO would be to determine what commercial 'chandleries' are operating in areas you wish to map. In CA that is West Coast and they sell totally detailed charts on the heavy paper for around $13.00, as with my exceedingly detailed San Francisco Bay Entrance chart. These are becoming collectable as the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is ceasing as technology (IPODS) take over. A search of English and perhaps German boat supply stores would surely carry the same product. Keep up the great cartography! At least when you do 'operation drumbeat' you'll have no problems with the East coast! :salute: http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/AtlanticCoastViewerTable.shtml http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineVie...up0/5-10-4.jpg < Charleston Harbor similar to my SF Bay chart!:shifty:

Hiya's,
You have to dl all the rar's and extract, you use the pw given, then you get pdf's and on the chart parts u get images, i can zoom right in on desktop to see easily all depths etc Amazing stuff :yeah: |

Yeah the NOAA ones are great. But they only cover the USA areas, and the other problem is there is no way to declutter them. Plus they have loads of modern data. So while detailed and great for their purpose I have ruled them out as a real source for WW2 cartography.

I have created my maps to aid in navigation and for depth. The online program I am using to generate the base maps has the information in English. I have looked online for months to try to locate German resources or original German database but can't find anything of central or workable value. I am not going to be translating the information into German but you are free to do so if you wish, I have no restrictions on their use. The end product is a result of these base maps plus my own research using google earth, and then some filters applied via pixlr. They also include custom decals from various materials online. I would love to see the most detailed images you can create. I have to make patchwork maps because the information is only drawn on the screen a little section at a time and then I need to copy and paste them together. It takes me about 3 hours per map to get just the data, then fix names/coordinates/add decals/ and finally formatting. That is enough work for me for a simple navigation map. I also do not plan to color these as I think most maps/charts were not in color. The original intent was black and white charts but they don't have enough flavor for me so I tint them up nice. P.S. Tried your link in 3 different browsers but it keeps saying retry. So its not working right. Might want to fix that. |

Im going to try and handle this tactfully. This thread is a listing however of the maps I'm making. I would ask you please refrain from asking simmers to check out your site here in this thread.
You have a business and I'm happy for you. I am a capitalist too. To claim that you are you are not engaged in the business of selling these maps when all of your maps have your logo watermarked on them and therefore are obviously property, i.e. products and that you are actively selling on ebay which is linked from your site and using my thread to market your site is what I would call a violation of good faith since. I have not been asked and have not agreed to sponsor or support your efforts and I'd appreciate it if you stop doing that. Some might conclude that we are working together in the effort to steer you business and it appears to me that you are using this thread to try and sell your password protected "products" and steer people to your website and in turn your map auctions. If your intent is to make money that is fine. Please don't misrepresent your intent. If I have it wrong please forgive me and I will yield to your explanation in your thread. Meanwhile I will continue to add my works here and there will never be any charges for them. That is all. |
