Assuming the story is true then it seems that the Beaver got in a one in a million shot akin to hitting the exhaust port on the Deathstar.

Those guys might not have told the whole truth. They may have been abusing the beaver. Any animal will defend itself.

The fact that beavers have survived as a species for so long is due to the fact that a beaver is capable of defending itself from attacks.

Who would have thought that an animal with jaws so powerful and teeth so strong that they can fell a tree might be capable of biting someone? :doh:

It is a wild animal and it will defend itself (and its young) from what it perceives to be an attack.

I wonder how the guy was photographing the beaver. I guess he never heard of a telephoto lens???

Raymond may be on to something. Perhaps the photographer was trying for an unusual picture by poking the beaver or throwing rocks at it.

Unless the beaver was rabid, I am having a hard time believing that by simply approaching a beaver that it would suddenly attack. He must have been pretty close to the beaver. Probably more to the story than has been released.

My initial thoughts.

"Yeah Officer, a beaver attacked the little snit,.... err our best buddy, we swear!"

And a vampire variety of the species at that! :o

The beaver clearly severed the mans femoral artery such an injury is often fatal.The only way to avoid death be to apply pressure proximal(nearer the heart) to the wound if the blood is spurting if that fails to stop the bleeding then a tourniquet is the only option.

Unfortunately for this man he got unlucky twice the first was that the beaver severed his femoral the second was that he buddies did not have any training in what should be a part of basic first aid which would be when to realize that a person has a severed artery and how to try and stop the bleeding and how to apply a tourniquet properly.

I strongly suspect there is a whole lot more to the story. Beavers are very slow on land, and don't exactly pounce well. They will fight viciously if cornered (like any critter), but they are not super well endowed for fighting on land as far as agility or speed.
