Umm.. yeah, modern sub games "Watch this screen as that blip disappears" doesn't appeal to me.
A strategic version maybe, where you controlled a whole fleet or something. |

Seriously, almost every game based on the use of modern equipment has to be based on a somewhat fictional scenario because conflicts of proper scale and intensity where such equipment is used are thankfully rare. Falcon 4, LOMAC, Dangerous Waters, OFP, Arma, Arma2, Black Shark(although less fictional than the others) are all great examples of this. That said IF the Silent Hunter series is ever continued I don't see why they would go modern. SH has always been about WW2 so it wouldn't make any sense to do such a huge leap as late as in sixth member of the series. They could have maybe done it back when the WW2 <-> SH relationship wasn't so strong, but now it's too late. Going backwards to WW1, maybe. The gameplay and the technologies available wouldn't be THAT different, and they've now done both major WW2 submarine campaigns a few times anyway. Another option would be to concentrate on a smaller campaign in much greater detail. Russian subs in the Baltic Sea, British subs in the North Sea and around Norway, etc... In this case a certain amount of fictionality would probably need to be brought in, because to my understanding neither of the above scenarios was quite intensive enough to be the basis of a good computer game, even if plenty of ships were sunk and lives lost. |
begin at the begining - start with WW1
i feel there is not so much more one can do with WW2. once SH5 is fully functional in a few years time - it is finished. after that it can only be add-ons through super mods like GWX et al. go for fresh. the history around WW1 subs sims is relatively new: can you imagine the graphics and game play! |
Hmmm yeah modern warfare and the high tech stuff we have now is nearly useless against what we are fighting now.
What we need now is X-ray vision to see the bombs strapped under the clothing of some poor bastard who has no life and has no reason to live, and every reason to die and leave his no life life behind. Nuclear subs? Another word for millons of dollars thrown out into the ocean, with nobody to fight out there. |
Would love to patrol Russian waters from our of a Norwegian naval base... but is this really what the SH franchise is all about?
Question 2: do we want, or need, another SH? |
What makes you so sure there will be another SH title? It could very well be SH5 is the end of the road for the series.
|
Fact is, its impossiable to go modern if your a average game producer.
First its has a smaller buyer group, and two, Where are you going to get the information on submarines/ships, ya think the german/american/russian navy is just gonna say "oah here, take are infromation of are submarine, yea, some of its classified but who gives a S***. Plus, we dont know how a moden sub will perform in real combat. |
