[REL] WB's VIIA

Before anyone gets too excited, this is not a graphic representation of a VIIA but adjusts the values of a VIIB to simulate a VIIA.

I also need to thank SailorSteve who gave me the idea.

This mod simulates a VIIA by adjusting the following values:
11 torpedoes
No external reloads
No rear tube reloads
Reduced range compared to VIIB
Reduced speed compared to VIIB
Adjusted displacement and engine power to simulate VIIA
The VIIA had one external torpedo tube at the rear - I've simulated this by leaving just one internal torpedo in the rear tube.

There are two versions of the mod. One is a standard JSGME version to allow you to manually change your VIIB into a VIIA. The second is a SH3 Commander version which will give you a VIIA at the start of the war then change it back into a VIIB on 11 Mar 40, the date at which the VIIB became more prevalent.

All changes are to the behavior of the u-boat and there are no changes to the VIIB model - on the outside it'll still look like a VIIB.

Enjoy!

I've been biting my tongue for two days now, trying hard not to say "Guess what? Guess what?" This is the answer to my dreams. No more dumping torpedoes (it didn't occur to me until just now to remove them while in port). No more reminding myself not to go faster than 17 knots. WOO-HOO!

I tested it several times. The cruise speed at 2/3 is only about 7 knots, but when I manually set it for ten, waited a few minutes and checked the maximum range at that speed, and every time it was just a hair over 10,000 km. I checked www.uboat.net and a couple of books, and they all give the VIIA's range as 6200 nm at 10 knots. 6200 statute miles is exactly 10,000 km, so that many nautical miles should be not far off that mark.

I'm running a patrol in one right now, and I LOVE IT!

I just checked it and it worked fine for me.:-?

Rosencrantz 05-25-10 02:10 PM

Thanks, Steve! Then I guess something is wrong in this end. Have to try again later.

Excellent :yeah:

Now if only a kind soul would modify the VIIB rear tube to depict the VIIA 100% accurate :D

Sailor Steve 05-25-10 03:05 PM

I'm sure W-B will put it up here at Subsim Downloads. I'd do it myself but he has always put up his own stuff so he can manage it more easily.:sunny:

@ Steve:

I'm not sure about different sites, but FF has always been the best place to me, Mediafire is usually working ok, but SS download site... an awful experience. It's only one or two times I have managet to get something through uncorrupted from that place. However, haven't tried SS DL after it's last major overhaul...

If you use the SH3 Commander version it's only 84 bytes. The standard JSGME version is 40.2KB.

If you're stuck, let me have your e-mail address by PM and I'll send it to you.

No. The only adjustments are to the VIIB files.

Wreford-Brown 05-30-10 09:53 AM

Give me a while to investigate.

While I'm looking into it, is anyone else having the same problem?

Sailor Steve 05-30-10 11:37 AM

In two hours? Give him a couple of days, at least.:sunny:

Sailor Steve 05-30-10 11:50 AM

No, but even dedicated modders have real lives. And once he's started it can be hard to find the problem. And it may turn out that he didn't accidentally adjust the files in question, and the problem is at your end.

Or not.:sunny:

RL includes taking my kids to the park and putting them to bed, and you're continuing to be rude from the other thread.

If you've already found the fault can you please tell me which file and which line I've made the mistake in.

Wreford-Brown 05-30-10 01:03 PM

You're wasting my time with a problem that I don't believe is there.

Bye.

What exactly did you check if you don't know where it is. There is a chance that the problem is on your end. I don't know because I'm using the non-Commander version, so I don't know for sure.

But you don't need to be rude to people who are actually trying to help. I've posted problems I was having and waited a week or more for an answer, and sometimes the answer was that I was wrong. You really need to play nice.
