hearing the eco ping in SH3+GWX3?

Hi to all, I'm now playing definitely with GWX3.0 because I finished the campaign in GWX2.1

Now, in GWX3.0 the ping sound is different, somewhat shorter than in GWX2.1

This night a DD was pinging me, and I'm very sure I was able to hear an higher tonality (so not higher in volume) ping sound just following the normal ping sound tone.. a sort of: <piiingINGg..>

So what was it?? the returning ping? an eco ping from sea floor (I was 40meters from it)??

thanks..!

I always thought I was hearing the echo ringing back to the sub... but thats just my opinion.

Sag75 10-20-09 11:19 AM

yes, me too. I was thinking it was the echo. But why I don't hear it when a DD is tracking me by repeated pinging?

Sag75 10-20-09 01:25 PM

So, any other comments on that by SH3 experts ?

Sailor Steve 10-20-09 01:47 PM

I've never even noticed it. Sorry.

You could always go into the sound folders of both GWX installations and check out/compare the echelot, sonar, sonar_coat and sonar_coat_imp files.

Sag75 10-20-09 07:38 PM

Yes! the second sound is likely sonar_coat or sonar_coat_imp

so... for what cause are these files played ?

They let you know if the asdic has gone 'active' basically.

Sag75 10-21-09 06:30 PM

..so is that higher tone sound the returning echo from your sub to pinging DD?

Sag75 10-22-09 11:22 PM

So, I removed sonar_coat and sonar_coat_imp from Sound folder.. and the weird sound was still there!

I heard more carefully and it's the sonar.wav file for sure, just played a tone higher.

It seems played only under unknown circumstances.. I made some observations, the depth doesn't seem have an effect even if I was able to hear it more frequently when I was close to surface or the sea floor. Moreover for one time I heard only the higher tone from the external view (!?) when I was close to sea floor.. so might it be a bounce echo that is audible only on a defined angle??

Jimbuna 10-24-09 09:38 AM

I can't honestly say for sure :hmmm:

Sag75 10-24-09 12:06 PM

This is the first time to me, too. Maybe because in SH3 stock and in GWX2 the ping sound is different.

Hasn't anybody heard it yet, in GWX3 ?

Jimbuna 10-25-09 12:06 PM

Myself and a few others have had a good 'listen around' and don't seem able to identify or replicate what your experiencing :hmmm:

Sag75 10-25-09 11:31 PM

hi, it doesn't happen to me every day, too! Probably it takes place only in some circumstances.

I tried Narvik II mission, letting me pinging by DDs. The water is pretty shallow there and sometime I was able to hear it..

Edit:

OK! I was able to record it! now you can hear it in the link below, it's the second ping. I was in NarvikII mission, at 20 meters of depth under keel, and a DD had already started pinging me, the record starts just after getting the detection notice in events menù.

So, I think it happens when a DD discovers you by its asdic, and it could be the echo.

Actually I realise this is not the answer your looking for but it sounds really cool.....it could possibly be an echo but I doubt it because the sonar doesn't recognise land ingame.

My guess is it could well be a sound file interfering with the sound file of another DD when both ping at the same time.

Sorry but that's the best I can suggest.

Sag75 10-26-09 04:00 PM

thanks, I remember I heard only one time the acute sound only, when I was outside the sub in the external view.

This is weird too, normally I can't hear any ping from that view!

I'll make more observations.

Commander Gizmo 10-26-09 06:04 PM

I wish you could hear the ping when in external view. It just seems to make sense that you would.

Sag75 10-26-09 06:24 PM

Hi, yes, but normally when you are into the sub and a DD is pinging, you hear the ping. When you jump outside you can't no more hear that.. but if you return inside, you can hear the ping again. What I heard outside, that surprised me, was only the acute ping (the second you can hear in the file above) and not the normal one.

So, for what modelled reason I can hear ONLY the acute tone outside the sub??

Sag75 10-26-09 11:13 PM

Here some news. I'm sure about this things:

1. the acute tone occours when a DD is pinging and you get the detection message in events menù and from your crew.
2. when you have the detection message, you may expect this particular ping within some normal pings that follow the detection alert. After several normal pings, it's not heard any more. You need an other detection message to have it back.
3. it seems indipendent by sea floor level (last time it was over 1000) and depth (I was at 140) and sub side to DD.
4. the number of DDs doesn't seem relevant.
5. on the contrary of the normal ping, this higher tonality ping (and only it) is also heard outside the sub in external view!

that's all, for now!

Commander Gizmo 10-27-09 12:43 AM

data\Sounds\sonar_coat.wav sounds very much like your second ping.
