[Rel] Skin: (weathered) Gato camo/noncamo
Hi,
this is a skin for the Gato class boats. For this one I focused mainly on two aspects: I tried to gave it a weathered look, with rust and washed up colors where appropriate, some black parts where the engine smoke constantly goes by. I made an attempt to create an oil canning look. Oil canning describes the metal skin of a ship being pushed towards the inner side by the constant pressure. Especially submarines are prone to this as you can imagine ;). Read more about it here: http://www.rokket.biz/models/modelsw...57/prog1.shtml I also invented a fictional camouflage scheme. It reminds me a bit of the historical dazzle camo, the US Navy used at these times. Again, the skin includes a version for the early and late war period each, so that the game will change it appropriately (somewhere around '44). Here is what it all looks like: http://cip.uni-trier.de/%7Eschmidt/sh4/show.jpg DL link: http://files.filefront.com/SKIN+Gato.../fileinfo.html I will also a non-camo version and one that looks less weathered for the ones of us who drive some brand new models ;). EDIT: Gna ... almost forgot to again thank Foofighters for his nice high res skin I used as a base, found here: http://www.oldsmobile1958.com/silenthunter/ Happy sailing :salute: |

I reassembled the layers and created a few new sets of variations of this skin, as I had planned.
I didn't make a full new set of screenshots but I think the changes are clear :) The skin without any camo stuff but still washed up and rusty and oil canned: http://files.filefront.com/SKIN+Gato.../fileinfo.html One with Camo and where it looks like it is brand new (highly reduced weathered effects): http://files.filefront.com/SKIN+Gato.../fileinfo.html showing only the clean late war camo skin: http://cip.uni-trier.de/%7Eschmidt/sh4/lateclean.jpg And as a little bonus (because I built it at least for me anyways :D): The swordfish emblem for the conning tower, Gato-ready. It is a leftover from my USS Swordfish skin http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=151507 ). Just activate it after any version of the above skin. pic: http://cip.uni-trier.de/%7Eschmidt/sh4/gatofish.jpg dl link: http://files.filefront.com/SKIN+Gato.../fileinfo.html |
Special request. There were a few S-Boats before the war done up in full dazzle camouflage. I'd love to have that available for the game with a sugar boat!:D I mean the whole bold in your face dazzle job!

Question: how do you hide an aircraft carrier? Easy!:O: http://gcaptain.com/maritime/blog/wp...-camo-ship.png |
Which picture did you say yes to ? :hmmm:
|
I think it is a general yes to the very bold style of Razzle Dazzle shown in those pics rather then one specific design.
Really, true Dazzle was a WWI type camo. It was used to some extent in WWII of course but not to the garish extent that it was in WWI. (look at the red/blue destroyer in my sig!) This is a good link that describes many Dazzle "systems" or schemes, good stuff starts on page 19: LINK Also on page 57 they discuss Submarine camo schemes. Quote:

Last time I was in this thread, the request for a sugar - dazzle skin was like the last post.
Off I went all excited about a skinning project, when I realized today that ichso was also working on a dazzle s-class. A very similar boat skin. I should have checked with you ichso...I apologize for that. |
Did, and no harm done, released mine anyways:salute:
|
bravo exellent work, I particularly like the rusted and worn not too flashy and at the same time very good qualitée.tu should do the same for the rest of the classes of submarines remaining. thank you |
Thank you :)
Which one do you mean for the rest of the roster ? The camo version or the usual one ? |
I prefer the camo of course, that is worn and rusty. I do not really like the versions of submarines classiques. too new or good job. strongly for the other classes of submarines. |
then WHy didn't they keep that paint scheme in RL ?
