Pointless first patrol ..?

So, having learned the hard lesson of not sailing through the English Channel after War has broken out, I'm just starting out on my 2nd 'first' Patrol, if you know what I mean.

As I always start my career in 1939, I find that the first patrol is always completely pointless - war has not broken out and everyone is neutral (well, green on the map), so there's nothing (i.e. not allowed) to sink. Accordingly, I cruise to my assigned sector, sail around for a day or so and head home again. All very dull ..

So, here's the thing -

1/ is there a way to start later in 1939 other than august and so avoid that pointless first patrol?
2/ will I be attacked if spotted by a 'neutral' warship?

thanks
/s

1) well i would suggest that you download SH3Commander with its files, this program allows you to set up a carreer with the options activated at your choice.
so if you want to start in september of 1939, well you just choose that date and start.

2) if the war with england or poland hasnt broke out yet, you can just sail past by the warship without the fear that it will attack. from the moment the war breaks out with poland their warships will attack and some days later englandwill declare war and their vessels become hostile.

Thanks Sturmer, I found a similar thread about 5 pages from here!

I don't have SH3 Commander just yet, so for now I'll just do some training runs (as the other thread suggests). For the craic, I'm gonna find me a nice destroyer, sail up to it (on the surface!) and see what happens; if it sinks me, I'll be back to get ye :-)

I'm also going to practice sinking those patrol ships in the english channel - the swines sunk me last time out.

thats a great idea of those practice ships, i think they are hostile no matter what.
but im pretty sure (about 90% :DL ) that noone will attack you before 04:45 of september the 1st (invasion of poland). after that i would dive for any warship that isnt an axis related country :D

IN GWX you start August 1st. Go out and do a shakedown cruise for 4 days then return to port. When you next leave port it will be August 28th and will give you enough time to go wherever before the war starts. The idea behind this is to give your crew 1 patrol worth of experiance.

Also removes the chance of getting no renown on first patrol - stock SH3 bug
And means you can be at your grid position as was historical

There is no way to start at any date other than the first of the month so this provides a good workaround

Man, how many of these threads are we going to get?

Weiss Pinguin 02-04-09 01:26 PM

All you need is a few good threads... :smug:

Sorry, i think.

Perhaps if it was a 'sticky' the question would not be asked anymore.

The only problem there is that if every important question had a sticky the first new threads would start on page three.

Besides, you'd be amazed how many people ask questions that are already stickied.:dead:

Everyone was new to each mod at some time or other and with new players coming along on a daily basis it is inevitable that questions will be repeated http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...ies/pirate.gif

Not so.....the community here are extremely friendly and helpful.

Have a look around and you'll soon recognise a regular cycle of newcomers being greeted most cordially and helped with just about any query they care to post.

Welcome aboard BTW http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...es/welcome.gif

This time i am sorry, i was being needlessly ratty. I found the thread much later on. With "August 1" as a title, I'd probably have skimmed over it.

Actually, this is the thread in question, the one I found later on. Entitled "what's the point?", i'd have missed it in my search for an answer to my question.

I just picked up the game again after GWX3 came out and, since I've forgot most of the game's in's and out's, I find much of interest in the newbie threads that's followed the release.

My comment was more of a hint to the kind of people who find it necessary to enter what is clearly a newbie thread and make condescending remarks instead of offering any kind of useful advice. I've just seen it in a couple other threads, and I just got a bit ticked off.

I'll just have my coffe now, and I'll be all right. I promise :D

Are you referring to me? I hope you aren't... I try to help out the newbies all the time, and currently, I'm house-ridden because of a really bad throat infection (No, not the bird flu) Basically, I'm online all day. Guess what, I'm not even cranky because of it!:yeah: I didn't mean to sound condescending in that post, just a bit of poking fun at the number of threads on this, but that's the way of the interwebz, eh?

Hello and a very warm welcome to Subsim
There all OK deep down i promise :)

FIREWALL 02-04-09 08:50 PM

Welcome arnesw :salute:

The search feature is a good tool but, not 100%

So keep asking if you run into a problem. :yep:

Weiss Pinguin 02-04-09 11:37 PM

Yep... IMO it would be a bit more useful if 3 letter words were included. :shifty: Usually have to sift through several pages to find what you need. Switching from 'Show threads' to 'Show posts' helps, however.
