Crazy U-Boat tactics
Coming home from the Florida straight, I encountered two tankers, sailing south at 7kt and executed a surface attack from 1500m. Two torpedoes hit the Medium tanker, sinking her imedietely, but the only torpedo fired at Small tanker was a dud :nope:.
I didn't have the nerve going through the whole process of outflanking and setting up another attack again, so I chased her a minute or two at flank speed, turn to perpendicular course and fired an eel from a point blank range. We were so close I almost rammed the darn thing, and was afraid the torpedo wouldn't even arm itself, but it did. Direct hit midship under the keel, and she sunk. :arrgh!: Now, I know that this is not the classic submarine tactic, but it was fun. ;) Anyone has some more crazy tactics? :D http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/407/86765447iv1.jpg |

hmmm at this distance i have to dodge its tail so the eals have enough time to arm. I use this tactic in thick fog with visibility around 200m.

Dunno if its only in my game but if i encounter lonely merchants or a pair of them in this weather conditions they are always running like speedy conzales on route 66. No way i can keep up with my poor 7knts submerged. Of cause getting into a standard attack position hydro attack is the way to go.

"not the classic submarine tactic" ?
It was for a lot of the early war! This is my standard tactic against convoys and long ships in 1939-41. (although at ~800m range) |

I like to surface right next to a merchant with an escort on the other side. I match the merchant's course and speed, and use him as a human shield.

ahh they are singing my tune down on the shIII threads again.:rotfl:

Haha, I've done the "human shield" thing before. I used it to get a Fiji CL to sink all her escorts.

Ive used a battleship as a way to sink DD, they would go around and as they went infront of me, Id pick them off.:p only 2 got away.

More or less. I wait for a moonless night with 7-15 windspeed and run at the convoy at about 10 knts. The merchants usually spot me at 400m distance and the warships at 1000m. That gives me plenty of room to get past any destroyers, get past the first row of merchants if I want to and then release my fish. After that I run away on the surface away from the destroyers at flank speed. 75% of the time I can lose them on the surface, especialy if the weather is bad. |
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/images/icons/icon10.gif Yup thats the way im messing convoys up at night when there is no CL in the center. Shoot, run to the other corner while the DDs are looking for me at my previous position. As more merchants are going down as less chance for me to keep going with this tactic.

Even early in the war, I prefer to keep at least 1500m distance from the closest ship, fire bow torpedoes and slowly escape with deck awashed. Even at bad weather I don't go above 5kts. I guess I have to much respect for the DDs.
