Uncontrollable Dive

This is the second time this has happened to me in this game, I dive and loose control of the boat till it gets crushed.

First time it happend I was in shallow water, ordered a routine dive to PD and the next thing I know I am at 150 feet, I repeat PD, nothing happens, order "S" Surface, nothing. Lastly I start pressing "E" still nothing and I die.

Second time planes were coming in and ordered Crash Dive. Same results.

Has anyone else had this happen?? I wasnt at battle stations, cant figure it out.

Strikor 04-08-07 11:14 PM

If you take even the slightest bit of damage from planes or depth charges you'll sink like a rock even if you repair everything you can. The damage control screen isn't set up to tell you these things, unfortunately.

Interesting cuse the first time it happened I hadmt been attacked by planes but the second timeI had just been attacked and a bomb did land it looked close but my damage control screen did not show anything wrong???

I have this happen every time I get damaged and I dive! I sink hundreds of feet in seconds. (NO, TIME COMPRESSION is not on) I dive to >1400 feet and sit on the bottom, till the boat floods. This bug is really ruining this for me.:dead:

partyboy 04-09-07 01:51 AM

I've had that happen after taking damage. The damage control screen will only say the AA/Deck guns are damaged. I run on the surface for hours with the damage control crew at work. There's no sign of any trauma anywhere on the boat.. I dive.. sink nose first like a stone.

Just another bug.

daft 04-09-07 02:13 AM

I've seen this too. However, I have taken hull damage, repaired it and still managed to control my dives afterwards. Once I even had two gaping holes (one just below the conning tower and one in the aft torpedo room) without loosing my ability to submerge, so it doesen't happen every time my boat is damaged.

partyboy 04-09-07 03:12 AM

Usually I can still blow tanks to surface, or blow tanks just to stabilize at my preferred depth, but it's not a state you really want to continue a patrol in. I'm fine with being damaged to the point where I can't safely submerge, but some sort of indication of that damage would be nice.

hi neal this is happening to alot of us is there anyway you can inform the dev team that this is a critical thing that needs to be fixed with patch 1.2 with the mods out there this is the only problem im seeing so far except for crew deaths happening where you lose your entire crew almost

And heres me thinking i must be hitting mines when i dive but all along it was a damn bug!

ParaB 04-09-07 07:10 AM

I think this only happens when the bulkheads got damaged previously. Normal flooding is no big deal, but once the bulkheads crack it's over with the diving fun, even if you manage to repair the initial damage.

I've had bulkhead damage and been able to dive normally after repairing the damage. I've been getting down to 200+ feet without problems in my current patrol despite taking bad damage. Had a lot of fun with flooding too when I have only been able to control the descent by increasing my speed which was fun when I needed to rig for silent running.

ParaB 04-09-07 07:28 AM

I have to admit the whole damage/control system is still a bit of a mystery to me, even after a dozen patrols. I'm still not quite sure what's a bug and what's a feature... ;)

kakemann 04-09-07 07:31 AM

I thought it was a feature. Seems like it occurs when there is hull damage - or?

digitizedsoul 04-09-07 01:05 PM

I have this problem a LOT as well and its a patrol killer for me.

There should not be anything that "kills you when you dive" that is NOT advertised in the damage control screen, period, it just shouldn't be that way.

If I am damaged to the point of no-diving, I need to know this. What if I saved a game after repairing damage? Load the game the next day and dive, BOOM death and no idea why because most likely I forgot I took damage (yesterday) and repaired it.

Needs to be fixed...

partyboy 04-09-07 02:24 PM

The problem is I've had it happen without any notification of serious damage. I get hit, "We're taking damage sir!", I check the screen, only the AA/Deck guns are damaged. But after spending hours on the surface with a damage control crew active, I dive and sink nose first. That doesn't seem fair (or realistic? surely I'd have some indication of that kind of damage.)

IMHO>Report to Dev's

:sunny: Hull integrity, may not be real life, but the chief of the boat should have some idea to pass on to Capt. SHIII's representation of hull diving ability ,needs to be addressed in patch for SHIV. Skipper's need to know ,to manage crew lives/health.
Needed option/feature !:sunny:

I practically wept...I'd just gotten done savaging a sizable Japanese convoy, some six medium freighters sent to the bottom and another crippled, mostly from deck gun action. To top it off, I'd completed both a cargo transport and a patrol mission, all on the same cruise.

So, I'm heading for home when I bump into a genuine task force. Four fish still in the tubes. I scan the horizon and spot the hazy outline of an enemy cruiser...periscope depth! We're on 'im, boys! Dive, dive...dive? Hey! Stop diving. No really, stop. STOP! ARRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH! *blublublublub*

Note: to this point, I'd taken NO combat damage, but possibly incurred some grounding damage when I bumped a teeny mid-ocean island that didn't show up on the big map. Was going ten knots at the time, and registered no damage at all on the chart, so I just backed up and went on my way.

DiveMonkey 04-09-07 03:34 PM

I may have your answer!

it's either a bug, or sabotage!

Just happened to me twice on patrol in the Celebes Sea.
No damage of any kind I'd dove to 100ft to have a listen,
Ahead 1\3 I set TC to 64 to speed things up a bit when I notice a message "compress air down to 50% :o

I click on the comp tab and it's dropping like a rock, I exit TC, BLOW TANKS! AHEAD FULL! and all most didn't make it.

So I started watching it every time I'd dive, and it happened again:hmm: Seems random, but if your not watching it once you run out of compress air there's no were to go but down.

I did finish the patrol...taking my ol S-18 in for a refit

Just ran another mission, I think it's some how related to high sea's, and the S boats.
I don't know but I would lose compressed air even faster than batteries, kept having to surface til finally got nailed by a Bete. Half the crew injured, and moral broken, had to return to base!...they offered me a teaching position at Annapolis....I said NO WAY! dismissed all the weaklings and shanghaied a new crew!

nikimcbee 05-27-07 02:04 PM

Did this bug ever get fixed?

daft 05-27-07 02:10 PM

Yeah, I think so. I haven't seen it since 1.2. I even battled it out with four Japanese DD's the other night after having taken some serious bulkhead and flooding damage to the aft torpedo room. I had to constantly blow ballast in order to stay above crush depth, but I finally managed to sneak away below a temperature gradient. :)
