Seriously, I wonder if there would be all of the flap if

(1) ancient (meaning old and not archaeic) religious beliefs were not involved and
(2) insurance benefits were not at stake.

A couple of gay friends of mine had a civil wedding ceremony and had to state to the registrar beforehand that they met various conditions, including that they weren't blood relatives.

"Why?" asked one "We're hardly likely to reproduce, are we?"

The registrar had no answer to that :)

Seriously, regarding the serious part of your post, there would still be some flap from some religious groups, but nowhere near the flap that dollars and religion together can cause.
