Unfortunatelly what works on paper does not work on the big screen every time.

In your opinion.:yep:

WHy do people around here always forget that necessary qualifier?;)

Of course :yep: Everything I wrote was just my opinion. I do understand that with movies and stuff there will always be some who don't really like the final product. This time it's me ;) :D

Definitely. Its like I don't like Rent. Only I don't dare tell the cute girls that love it.

I suppose its the same when they fix a faux smile when I mention Apocalypse Now.:hmm:

I havn't seen it yet ...

When I do it will be for ENTERTAINMENT not education...

If I were to be educated by Hollywood Movies I would be...

1. Homosexual

2. Perverted

3. Prone to believe anything to further my chosen life style

4. Able to come back from the dead when ever I needed to

5. Murderous

6. Vengeful (I have a streak of that anyway ... I don't need help)

7. Adulterous

8. Dishonest

9. Easily swayed

10. Forced to except all people who are the above

Actually this is really interesting. I had the same opinion when I saw the movie. It looked to me like a Nazi-Propaganda one.

CCIP 04-14-07 05:18 PM

Is that surprising though? I mean, you can't blame it for the fact that it happens to emphasize the same ideals of war, epic [nationalist] pride and masculinity as the Nazis thrived on :hmm:

Is this a movie (film)?

Should the topic be moved to the Sub & Naval Books, Films, and Models forum??

CCIP 04-14-07 05:27 PM

Well it ain't Sub & Naval, that's for sure

The only reason for my post was that last week I posted a film thread (Ice Station Zebra) and it was moved to the other board (by whom, I don't know).

I certainly don't want to be the Subsim police, but I recently received a FYI about 'misbehavior' and if I have to live up to a certain standard it is only fair that everyone else does the same. Don't ya think?

CCIP 04-14-07 05:52 PM

But AFAIK Ice Station Zebra has a nuke sub, while this one has a bunch of angry Spartans, and not a naval unit in sight :p

I think it's fine off here in General Discussion. It's all fine points, really; I'd say the moving is all because we're a naval forum and there's specific sections for films relating to that - I wouldn't go making that section a general movie discussion, though!

Indeed, the Nazis took heavily from history their emphasis on nationalist pride. Plus the world was different back then. Ethnic lines really did divide people. And certainly whether you see this film as an interpretation of Spartan culture at the time (not my take) or as a representation of the exaggerated style of story telling inherent in Classical times (my take), making absurd comparisons to Naziism and the Jews and the like is just trying to create an issue where there is none.

I think the Nazis and other propagandists chose the elements they liked and conviniently forgot those that could cause trouble for their ideas. In any case I will not say anything more as this dicussion needs a thread of it's own ;) :D

You've got that bloody right. And I don't know if I'd want to be involved in that one.

It was what it was ment to be, entertaiment. If you don't look at history, it was a decent movie, it kept me firm on the seat.

1933 this style was politic, today I would say: Kitsch
