Basically the rules are to put as much TV as possible through a 10x10cm hole:O:

Makes them 1st year students happy, you know:DL

I can't take it to a shop easily as it's way too big and heavy for me to move easily - no way I can carry it. If it comes down to either buying something new or getting it to a repair shop (or trying to work out a way to have a repairman come here) I will probably just buy something new.

Ah, there does appear to be a little panel secured with a screw, where the power cord connects to the back of the set. May be worth a try if I can maneuver the thing around and check it out. :yeah:

The bad thing is I'm already looking at LCDs on Amazon and now I want one. :wah:

Okay what's the deal with LED-lit? Obviously it costs more, is it worth it? I don't know what it does!

LED lit screes last longer(have a longer lifespan) and use less power

Just watch your programs here on the internet.
Yuck, I do not want to sit here at my desk to watch TV shows and DVDs. Watching shows online is, for me, an option to take advantage of if I miss something that I normally would make a point of watching, which is almost never, since I don't make a point of watching more than a couple shows a week any given season... if even that.

I can't lounge on the couch and watch a show or movie that way. It's not relaxing. I certainly wouldn't sit here and watch a two hour movie like that. :nope:

But I agree about Turner Classic Movies. :yep:

That's what I'm seeing as I browse what's available.

Oh well, I'm not going to get anything I want any quicker through Amazon if I order tonight - soonest I could get something is late next week, and it's not my #1 choice in my price range although I could get 24 months to pay it off with no interest which would be awesome.

I may look here locally tomorrow just to see if something comparable or better can be bought at a better price. If not I'll order from Amazon and still get it the same day.

What sucks is that I need to be reviewing a lot of kata right now, before next Friday, which are on DVDs which can now only be played in a room where there is not enough floor space to actually practice them. Which is why I'd kind of like to get something ASAP if I can and get it up and running.

Of course the last time I tested for a promotion we had a ginormous windstorm come through the weekend before and wreak havoc and I didn't even have electricity for the entire week prior to the test, so I guess I shouldn't complain. :O:

Might I suggest if your a COSTCO member look there.

While they might not be the cheapest, their return policy almost gives it a LIFETIME WARRANTY.

Something to think about.

ps. Add $50.00 basic membership fee if your not a member.

pss. Be carefull. You'll go nuts at the cheap prices of stuff in THAT place. :haha:

Oh, absolutely!

I just took the little removable panel over the power connection off, there's no fuse, nothing, the cord just passes through it into the bowels of the beast, which I can't find a way to access unless I want to take the whole dang thing apart. Which would be fun and interesting, but not likely to result in anything getting fixed.

The plug itself is one solid piece, nothing to pop out there to repair/replace anything either.

Ya might want to unplug it before delving any deeper. TVs carry a wee bit of electricity. :smug:

And don't touch any capacitors. Some can still hold enough to juice to ruin the day, IIRC. :ping:

Oh, I learned all about electricity when I was a preschooler, helping my dad tinker with stuff in the damp leaky basement of our old house. I believe the first lesson went something like, "If you want to hold the lamp for daddy, please don't stand in that puddle." :O:

Opening up the back will serve no purpose but, to get your arse shocked off. Be Carefull. :yep:

Fortunately I have a working TV in another room (which is far older than this one, and still going strong) but now I can't lounge about on the couch and watch anything. :stare:

Oh well... off to Amazon. At least if I buy a flat panel, it should be easy enough to buy online and get home on my own, unlike all previous TV purchases.

Oh! Oh! Reminder time!! :shucks:

No worries, all my shortcuts to Amazon point here. :D

Edit: Just ordered a Philips LED LCD 32" flat-screen HDTV, $498, via the Subsim link.

I know nothing about this brand but it was the only thing that had an optional audio output for RCA jacks, which is the only stereo hookup I've got at the moment. And it had a pretty good rating. I'm sure I'll like it fine as long as it actually comes on when I plug it in. And OMG it will be such a space saver... I think I will actually be able to put the cable box on top of the TV stand and sit this TV on top of it, which will free up some space in the cabinet as well.

I won't have it 'til Tuesday but having checked all the current ads for the local brick and mortar stores, there was nothing comparable for even close to the same price.

So - the die is cast. I will inaugurate this puppy (after I finish reviewing my kata) with the playing of Das Boot at the first available opportunity. :D

Edit Part Deux:Oh dear lord how am I gonna get the old TV out of here? :o

FIREWALL 11-05-10 11:27 PM

Yell!!! And throw it out the window. :haha:

Philips, can't really go wrong with it. The company is from the Netherlands and one of the biggest electronics companies in the world.

Aye:salute:
My granddad used to work there as head of a Cathode Ray Tube department from the 50's till the early 80's. His department used to make the predecessors of the TV you just bought:cool:

Should just about last its warranty period then :DL

frau kaleun 11-06-10 05:11 PM

Well after I ordered I thought... hmmm, Philips, is that like the "Philips audio" I sometimes hear good things about?

Anyway I know the name and have never heard anything bad about it, just not owned any of their stuff AFAIK.

And having the option to continue to use RCA jacks for external audio was really what sealed the deal. All I have in there is a small bookshelf stereo, the CD player on it went wonky a few years back but the amp and radio are still good and it's got decent enough speakers even if it's just the old two-speaker stereo sound and not anything fancy. So I moved it out there just to run the TV sound through for movies and stuff. In a small apartment it's adequate, it's not like I need (or want) to blow the walls out.

So at least I won't have to upgrade my audio in that room until I recover from this expense.

I was looking at soundbars last night though, supposedly they deliver the same experience as having a surround-sound set up only without half a dozen pieces of equipment scattered around the room. (One of the reasons I haven't upgraded is that I just don't have anywhere to put everything that comes with that kind of system.) Anybody use those, do they actually work as advertised? If so that would be an upgrade I could see going for in the future.

Oh, and I got the old TV out successfully. I did end up taking it apart, and my excellent bro-in-law came over with a dolly and we got the heaviest bit of innards out that way. The rest could just be hand-carried to the dumpster. I don't think we could've gotten the entire TV on the dolly anyway, even if we did getting it down the stairwell would have been iffy... so it all worked out. :yeah:
