wow, I come back and the whole world has been on here.. well, ok, quite a few other folk!

Paajtor, glad you got some mileage out of the X-series, and now I want to find out about this Oblivion you speak of!

Hakakura, what IS a kaleun? Will I like being it? Does it mean sailor?

GlobalExplorer, the memory of things gone always remains rosier than the now. I recently downloaded an Elite clone called Oolite, which seems as close as you can get to the original from what I found. I tell you, I wouldn't want to go back to that state of graphics again, although all those years ago I felt Elite was THE best. Egosoft's X-series IS like Elite in that it is open-ended and that you can trade, fight pirates and the enemy or attack innocent ships, build huge empires and fleets etc, and although there is a plot, you don't have to stick with it ( after XBTF anyway), and it is that freedom to go your own way rather than be tied to a particular route that so many of us find appealing. It is a deep and evolving game, but you do need patience and tenacity to slog through the early days. I am sorry you did not enjoy it - but we are all different :)

Back to thread ( ish). My best beloved is so taken with my 'new' Grey Wolf SH3 that he wants his own copy of the sim. Hmph, he used to work on war thingies so he knows a thing or two and will be steaming past me in no time I reckon, but if it stops him buying other stuff on eBay, I shan't grumble. Well, like danlisa says, time to spend some time at sea ( again), byebye for now.

Kaleun = Captain

She-Wolf 01-15-07 03:53 PM

aahhh, thank you danlisa

Not as far ago I was wondering, what the hell was that 'Kaleun' that they call each other on this forum... Probably some American crappy word I shouldn't bother. And then I finally bought and watched "Das Boot". And then I knew... :)

PS Welcome among us, Kaleun (Kaleunin?). :)

No, you don't.

Not yet, at least....first enjoy SH3 a bit more.

As for your rigging-issue: set Anisotropic Filtering to 16x (or as high as possible) in driver-settings, and see if that works.

She-Wolf 01-15-07 06:26 PM

well thank you all gentlemen. I have just been having another bash at the torpedo training ( sigh). I can usually nobble the big merchant with one or two 'fish' ( zat right?), but getting lined up to sink someone else takes me such a long time that most of them have scuttled off and I have to chase them and try to come alongside..ee. I WILL get the hang of it.

I have read quite a bit of the Grey Wolves manual, but not too much of the history bits, next I will try the tips and tricks section on here to see if I can improve my performance.

I have several times watched the Das Boot sequence play through. Each time I felt a mixture of admiration and respect for the young men who had to endure such awful conditions threats and possibilities for months at a time, and a renewed confirmation that war is indeed horrible.

Vikinger 01-15-07 07:24 PM

Oblivion is a nice game. I have that also installed on my comp. There is a big mod community for that game as well.
I bought the expansion pack for the game during christmas so i wanted to give it a go again.

But the game is an adventure/rollplaying whit swords and sorcery and its not a simulator.

Btw when we speak of other games. I do also have a version for Elite 3 installed that works well even on a new computer. Quite fun to do some nostalgia playing sometimes also.
Did you know that David Braben is planning to do a sequel Elite4. His company is currently working on another game but he have stated that when that game is released they will start to work on Elite 4.

And soon will SH4 be released.

Darn iam playing to many games :D

Oblivion and SH3 are death to my time, and time is something I really can't afford to kill as a student. I play MTW2 as well, which is another one of those time wasting games. I've restricted myself to SH3 for the time being (and not playing alot), till exams are over.

I know the feeling. So many wonderful games and so little time to play. Unfortunatelly with work, and especially now that term has started and students (like you Boris:p ) are back (exams to prepare, people to supervise, administration, teaching etc) I am so busy, I consider it a luxury if I can ever play GWX during the week.

She-Wolf 01-16-07 06:12 AM

Will we get ticked off for going off-topic ( she asks timidly)?. Mornin' Community, Pawz here ( Gracie to my friends )

I looked up Oblivion and it is the sequel to Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind, yes?

I have Morrowind, but have only played it once. I am sure it is a very good game ONCE you get into it, but for me there is not too much attraction in wandering around talking to people, so maybe I will give Oblivion a miss. But now Boris mentions MTW2.. I shall have to check that out now, but I expect it will be too gory for the likes of me.

Vikinger, David Braben seems to have been promising a return of Elite for the last ten years, but if it ever does come back ( though not wireframe) I would be interested.

You would think that being retired, I would have time to play ALL these games that you poor students can only snatch stolen moments with - but life is not like that, not here anyway. Mostly I am mending, upgrading, refurbishing computers for folks, and that can be a very time-consuming affair, especially as I do it for free.

Anyway, enough of this nattering, I shall have my nose in the how-to's tonight to see if I can improve my torpedo strategy. If you see a little sub out there on the waves, looking lost, it will be ME!

jasonsagert 01-16-07 07:58 AM

I'm not sure what realizm settings you're using as far as torpedoe attacks. I started with the "easy" targeting, went to weapon officer, went to me ploting everything, back to weapon officer. After I convinced myself that I could plot a firing solution, it just wasted my game playing time to plot every solution. But, there are great tutorials on this forum if you're still having trouble--and manual "everything" is kind of hard. Requires me to have my pen and paper near. I don't like it, actually. I enjoy the weapons officer--hell, there's a reason that I'm a Kaptain! My officers should be doing that maths.

Chears,

J

It's your own topic, so if you don't mind going off-topic yourself...:D

I like Oblivion for the swords and bows.
Sure, you have to talk to people...but that is only a part of the game.
You need to talk to them, to find clues about quests you have accepted...or get a hint for a new quest from them.
You also gotta do some talking, to get merchandisers to buy or sell for a good price.
Maybe you can compare it to the billboards of X3.

But for me, the game is all about stealth and sneaking (in my case, playing as a Thief-character, wood-elf based).
There are dozens and dozens of caves and dungeons in the Oblivion world for you to explore and clean up.
Just that is enough to keep you going for weeks...and that's even without touching the story-line.
I only went through the 1st couple of story-quests, to get a free horse in the early game.
And all enemies level up with you, so there will always be a challenge in fights.

But compared to the X3, Oblivion has a much more interesting storyline.
In X3, it got really interesting once you ignored the story, and started building up your own empire.
In Oblivion, the storyline opens a new parallel world (called Oblivion...some may call it hell), and suddenly Oblivion-gates start appearing everywhere, for you to enter, and for new enemies to emerge from.

It's a great game, with awesome visuals, and a game-world that seems to be alive and breathing.
And the weather-engine is the best I've ever seen in a game...I really wish SH3 could have it the way Oblivion has: when a thunderstorm approaches (suppose you're in a forest), it slowly starts to get darker...the wind picks up, and trees start to move violently...suddenly a thunderstrike, and before you know it, showers of rain are blown into your face, and you really feel the need to hide somewhere.
After a few hours, the thunderstorm disappears, and there's a good chance that fog comes after it.

You need a juicy rig, to play the game at higher settings...but I guess that is not a problem for you.
I compare SH3 to X3 and Oblivion, because these games are very complex, and offer allot of freedom.
And all 3 have a great community, with good modders.

I know Oolite. Strange, I am absolutely delighted by it and sometimes show it to friends as an example of how games were in the good old days. In fact I even started writing a similar program with much better graphics to learn OGRE, but unfortunately I lost interest in that after a while ..

Anyway, discussion matters of taste is pointless, enjoy the X-games!

She-Wolf 01-16-07 12:58 PM

Global, glad you know about Oolite - I wouldn't disagree with you that it is nostalgic - I just wouldn't want to go back to those sorts of graphical limitations. I still have it on my machine and ONE day I might actually manage to dock again ( I can remember being so proud when I first managed it in Elite!). The game was all in the play, that was its abiding worth I suppose :)

Paaj,
now you have got me wanting to play Oblivion - is it as good as that in Morrowind do you know?

jason
- err, p..plotting, me? Um. Did I know about that? I am in the training exercise and they don't got no plotting or easy options. If I click on the weapons officer he will mark the nearest merchant, but I can do that for myself, and besides, nearest isn't always the best choice. I have been trying to approach vessels in such a way that the torpedo will strike as square-on as I can make it, with me either pointing the bows of the sub straight at it, or running with it on a parallel course. Mostly I get strikes, but it takes such a long time to manoevre the craft around to the next quarry - which is hightailing it off to the horizon - that I don't always find sufficent boats to target, so can't complete the brief.

Ho hum :arrgh!:

Vikinger 01-16-07 01:51 PM

Some people liked morrowind better than Oblivion. But i have played both games and i must say i enjoy Oblivion much more.

Iam also an elf thief specilized in bows and destruction magic and sneak, picklocks etc.

its quite thrilling when you sneak into someones home and rob them from everything they have while they lay in bed snoring :D

The npc in the game are cool coz they have thier own life and buisness. They wake up, eat breakfast, go to work, end of work either they go home again or visit a taverna for some gossip.

If you are unlucky u will get biten by a vampire and become on for your self. U can only be outdoor at night and u need to feed also :) Its a long and difficult quest to do to cure you from vampirism.

You can buy houses and have them as your home. Every city offer some house for sale.
Well there is so much to do in that game so it will keep you occupied for months :)

She-Wolf 01-16-07 01:55 PM

gosh.... well, it and Oblivion and any other juicy carrot dangled in front of me is just going to have to wait its turn, cos right now I'm in the untersee boot :D and I just can't switch my mind to goblins or spacecraft or ANYthing when there is the serious business of mastering these torpedoes to deal with.

Paajtor 01-16-07 03:03 PM

That's what I told you before....don't get Oblivion now.
Get it when spring arrives or so. :)

My squad's own forum has a topic about Oblivion (9 pages by now lol)...you may want to read some overthere.

She-Wolf 01-16-07 05:19 PM

yes Paajtor, you are right... except... I already gone and bought a copy from eBay. BUT, I won't even open it until I have got THIS game a bit more understood.

I have been getting my toes wet again and did not fare at all well in either of the training sessions ( Torpedo and Convoy).

I have been looking at the sticky and found out about setting the realism level. I set it to 54%, which included delayed torpedo loading, but now I have turned that particular option off - just while I am getting the hang of it all.

I downed the big merchant with two torps in the torpedo exercise, but then spent HOURS trying to line up for a good pop at the others, and used most of my torpedoes in near misses. Hmph. Then I did convoy and got one ship sunk and successfully avoided being depth charged, but then the escort kept on going round and round me and I could not seem to get away, even though he did not seem to know where I was. I did not quite understand though why the escort ships started firing at each other, until eventually one sunk. They both seemed to have the same flag, and when I got there I assumed they were both escorting the merchants...

Anyway, I shall have another go tomorrow ( and the day after that, and the day...)

ps, yes I will take a peek at your 9 pages of Oblivion, when it comes, ta:D

I'm guessing here, but, open the torpedo doors first (Press Q). There is about a 3sec delay in firing if you don't.;)
