Me too, and I'm pretty certain that this feature was originally planned (since every country has a "submarines" folder).
One could cry if you think what this sim might have been.... :damn:

Yeah, it would have been a very nice fight. Sub vs sub. Catfight. :o

The only problem being that, like air combat, most of the kills were made on victims who never saw their attackers.

"Okay, I'm sailing out of Brest when I suddenly die. The screen says 'Killed by British Submarine'".

Boy, that sounds fun.

Nah!

lets think about this in game terms.....

1) a British/Dutch/Soviet submarine isnt going to be some
kind of invisible entity sneaking around submerged every
where, much like your boat they will spend most of the
time running on the surface.

2)It wouldnt dive until it spotted a threat such as your
Uboat, to do this you would have to be within visual
range, meaning the chances are your watch crew
might see it before it sees you! 50/50

3) Lets say for example it slips beneathe the waves
with out your crew noticing, (If you submerged you
will hear it coming anyway- )and if you are surfaced
well- you still might have some chance, your watch
crew might yell out something like:
'PERISCOPE SPOTTED! BEARING XXX'
or
'TORPEDO WAKE ON STARBOARD BOW'!!!'

This would give you some warning, enogh time to
hit 'C' and kick you rudder hard/port startboad to
dodge any torpeedos.

4) Once its submerged, evading it shouldnt be difficult,
since you can outrun it on the surface with ease, you
would throw engines in to ahead flank, keep changing
course every miniute to minimise the risk of being hit.

5) Once you have Radar, Radar warning, and acuostic
fish, you will be laughing anyway....

6) Imagine having a deck gun duel with a british sub,
imagine tracking one under water and taking a
hydrophone shot at it. You tell me thats not gonna
be fun....

Perhaps type 34 DD's will finally have a use for its
depth charges!?

Now I know that time compression could mess this
up and cause insta - death, but this already exists
in the game with aircraft, mines and destroyers in
heavy fog!
So it doesnt really make any major difference, since
of all those things being sunk by a surprise attack
from another submarine would be one of the most
unlikley.

Also remeber that Aiiled submarines never really ventured
out in to the Atlantic since there was no real need for them
to be there!
You would be more likley encounter them in coastal
areas, the North sea, Baltic sea and mediteranean,
where they savaged German shipping something
horrible!

The Germany-Norwiegen Convoys in the North sea,
and Supply/troopships in the med serving Rommels
Africa korps were hit hard by british Submaines.

If Silent hunter is to become a proper fully dynamic
naval simulator, it needs sub AI, with sub AI you will
open up the possibilites to have the following:

Enermy submarines
Wolfpacks
Milkcows
Destroyer command!

I think it goes with out saying that the above four
are the biggest and most noticable missing features
of SH3

I saw them in SH2 as well. One of them was hanging about near the port I was departing. IIRC I was cruising on the surface and heard something like "Periscope spotted" and that it had fired torpedoes at me. I had to go to flank speed and dodge them. Then there was a submerged game of cat and mouse that ended with me just thinking "Sod this!" and leaving.

However that darned sub kept appearing in later patrols, and when I was returning from patrols - so I got fed up and blew it to smithereens.

I seem to also recall that other U-boats appeared on the map, and that you could sight them at sea from the conning tower.

Btw, http://www.uboat.net/fates/sub-sunk.htm says that 22 boats were lost to allied subs. What's one boat between friends though :D

In the U-boat War Ace (Wolfpack) campaign you may see wolfpacks and single AI U-boats attacking Allied shipping. You can also put wolpacks to campaign yourself following advices/description by Col7777. You can also put in the campaign US S-class sub which is available as a free mod in both surfaced and submerged variants (I am not sure if it is used in U-boat War Ace (Wolfpack)) although it is not capable of attacking.

In SH2 you can take on enemy subs but as for friendly one’s I have only seen them on the map only strange.

There is an allied Uboat mod for submerged and not submerged version!

I don't know, from where I have downloaded, and only looked how it works in the game - it works, as the AI german Uboats.
It looks pretty nice.

I have seen the British T class in the Seawolves med. Sank one with a fish. sank another with a deck gun. Very hard target to hit and dueled to a draw with another with a deck gun. Did not want to waste a fish.
They have AI U-Boats in port and there is a Russian L and an Italian sub but I have yet to see them. I waited until fired upon with the British subs because they are impossible to tell apart unless you are a few hundred yards away and the ones I ran into were around Sicily where they could have been the Italian.
Better than nothing but not what we would like in fish firing subs.

What I downloaded, was a free mod.
What type of weapons used that submarines, which you engaded?
These free mod sub has 'virtual torpedos', and maybe deck gun + AA (can't now remember).

Sailor Steve 03-16-06 02:54 PM

Yes, SHII had enemy subs, but SHII had no career, just a bunch of scripted mission strung together and called a "Campaign". The mission writer could put in all the enemy subs he wanted.

Oh, SubSim's "Second Kampagne" had one mission with at least one friendly sub in it. I went over and said "hello".
