I beg to differ. On September 10, 1861, the Union gunboats Conestoga and Lexington, operating from Island #2 to Lucas Bend, Kentucky, were fired on by Confederate troops. Conestoga returned fire with 8" cannister. An 8" gun is technically a 64-pounder.

Cannister rounds, used as recently as WWII by US Marines in 37mm calibre to break up Japanese Banzai charges as well as the Korean War to sweep enemy infantry off friendly tanks during massed infantry attacks. |
