The beaver clearly severed the mans femoral artery such an injury is often fatal.The only way to avoid death be to apply pressure proximal(nearer the heart) to the wound if the blood is spurting if that fails to stop the bleeding then a tourniquet is the only option.
Unfortunately for this man he got unlucky twice the first was that the beaver severed his femoral the second was that he buddies did not have any training in what should be a part of basic first aid which would be when to realize that a person has a severed artery and how to try and stop the bleeding and how to apply a tourniquet properly. |
I strongly suspect there is a whole lot more to the story. Beavers are very slow on land, and don't exactly pounce well. They will fight viciously if cornered (like any critter), but they are not super well endowed for fighting on land as far as agility or speed.
