Every time I try this I get the shot perfectly right down the throat... MY throat! :D

Gene Fluckey cautioned against the tactic of deliberately holding the 'scope up for a down the throat shot, as if any of the three torpedoes had a rudder lock hard over, then the sub was dead. The Germans at least used the tactic of holding the 'scope up when they had homing torpedoes.

Being stuck at periscope depth with a DD that knows exactly where you are, with torpedoes that don't behave properly = you don't make it back from patrol.
