I like both...as with most people here, I think, it depends on mood.
GWX is absolutely lovely. Gameplay and atmosphere are lovingly attended to, and you can't go wrong. I do have a lot of interest in the fleet boats, though. Some of my coolest memories are from visiting a couple of them that are now museum ships. SH4 is the only thing that allows you to put 'em in action. Completely different feel, though. In the Atlantic, you start out fairly confident, and, as the war goes on (and you know you'll lose anyway,) things get more desperate both tactically and strategically. I send out a max of 5 torpedoes and sink about 3 ships per convoy attack, typically. Then...wait for the storm of DC's, which only get closer and closer for each attack as the months scroll by. In the Pacific, rampaging around in a Gato-class boat is much more optimistic. You know your side wins, and things get better for you as the war progresses. You've got 10 fish on call per attack, with reloads to spare. That's a lot more firepower than I've gotten used to in the Type VIIB. Also, the Pacific is way bigger. Even at ~8000x compression it takes forever (on my slowish computer) for me to get to my patrol zone from Pearl. Mind you, I just got SH4 running, haven't modded it yet, compared to SH3, which has been GWX/SH3 Commanderified. First impression of SH4 is good...the weather is certainly nicer. :D |
SH4 has developed into a nice subsim. In my opinion... SH3 and SH4 both came fresh out of the box with bugs... however the bugs in SH4 were much more critical and persistent.
my preference is for the u-boats, the war for them was more challenging, and the situation more desperate. modded, SH4 is nice, but SH3 remains king of the silent hunter series... especially with the mood and feel of GWX. |
It's on ebay for $9.99 + free shipping. No excuse now. :haha:

I've been playing U-boats with SH4 and Operation Monsun for some time now. Immersion-wise, SH3 with GWX gives more feel to the harbors and such, and adds more, and has had a lot more development time. That said, SH4 is much more stable, gives really cool latitude and longitude coordinates on the map, and the U-boat add-on gives KM grid squares right down to the fourth digit! I'm having a great time alternating between playing both.
Yes, there is still a long way to go (and it may never get there for u-boats, with SH5 on the horizon), but SH4 is definitely worth the money for the way the crew management works, and for the way it looks inside when you order Battle Stations. Loads of fun. |
Welcome aboard, lad... :arrgh!:
If you enjoy the Pacific War install sh4 + patch 1.4...and install the follow mods: Trigger Maru Overhaul and RUIM_v1.0_for_SH4v1.4_HI-S mod with JSGME Enabler and you will be all right! :D |
You can always send me your postal address via PM and I'll mail you my copy.
I played it for about a few months then took it off my computer and haven't touched it since. |
I finally bit the bullet yesterday and ordered SH4 off of e-bay. I don't know if I'll get around to playing it anytime soon. I'm currently immersed in SH3(although I'm taking a short hiatus from it) and I want to see the war thru to the end. At that point I'll probably start SH4. But, you never know though.
Of course, by then SH5 will be out and I'll be wanting that too. :) |
The short answer is NO, but ask yourself that - will sh4 worth it after gwx4 hits the web - hell yeah !

GWX or no GWX, SH4 is worth it at least until 5 comes out.

Just got my copy in the mail. :woot:
Loaded it up, and played around a little bit before RL took over. First impression......meh. Maybe I'm too used to SH3. I'll definitely give it a good run though and give it a chance. :) |

In fact, I've been wasting time at work this morning looking at the available mods. My mouth has been watering all morning. So much for getting to 1945 in SH3 before starting SH4.:D :) |
