GWX 2.0 gave me 1500 renown

but then i did score excellent on navigation (which is the one tutorial i reloaded to see what GWX looked like)

In the stock game people used to report being attacked by as many as 20 Sunderlands...and shooting down 15 before they were finally sunk. Very unrealistic. In real life patrol planes would fly alone, and attack alone, and usually win. There are many reports of aircraft circling out of flack range and calling in additional assets (especially when the U-boat chose to fight it out on the surface and were damaged in the first pass thus preventing them from diving).

First rule of thumb:
