I submerge only when enemy aircraft is around and if destroyers are nearby and of course to attack convoys. Battery power uses up fuel when recharging. The less recharging the more fuel you have. I usually sail at 2/3 speeds, slow but sure. In an S-18 boat you can stay for 2-2 1/2 months on patrol.
