while in that area.
I am planning to travel while I am there so going to france and germany are pretty much sure things.
My wife says that if I visit any old war museums that she is not interested but I do plan on taking a couple of weeks to go and try to find some of the old sub pens and visit the very few that are open to the public. Does anyone know of any U-boats that are not going to be cut into pieces that I can visit in europe, I know we have a Balao class boat sitting in the Arkansas river that I visited (shame it was refitted) and I would be interested in seeing a whole VII or something...perhaps one that I can get inside. I know I am bombarding you folks with questions...I am just very excited to get a chance to learn more about a place I always thought I would only read about. Thanks for the info so far. Mike |
U 995 is at Laboe, Germany and U 2540 is at Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum (German Maritime Museum) at Bremerhaven
Hoefully both are still there Not sure what uboat pens are open - if any |
i believe there are some u-boat pens at st.nazaire, there was a VIIC at kiel that i walked through as a teenager. There is at present a type IX near Liverpool.
Also although not at all U-boat related, a walk around Arromanches in Normandy is unforgettable. It's worth going to the WW1 battlefields too. |
