In time SH4 will be great in it's own right, it is still barely 5 months old. There are some great things happening with it :yep: I am just content to have both theatres to sim in:up: RDP |
well its a bad option to compare silent service with silent huntet 3 dont ya think???
but as far as "dates" are concerned the silent service should win hands down. up to todays dates then SH3 GWX wins hands down. so just to be awkward Silent Service for me due to their brilliant prgramming gor the era. |

Fair I sure had a lot of fun at it hours and hours and hours strangely I had an affinity for surface attacks using guns against the escorts back then too. |
I miss the old days with Hunt for Red October...or Clancy's Red Storm Rising or SSN...
sigh..... |
I found this quite a difficult choice, because I have enjoyed many subsims e.g. the likes of Silent Service, but they are from a different era so really can't be compared with today's subsims. At the time Silent Service was around any dedicated subsimmer would have probably said it was the best thing since sliced bread like we are saying SH3 is today. I also enjoy the modern subsims like Sub Command and Dangerous Waters (why isn't DW on the list!!) and have spent many enjoyable hours in my 688i or Seawolf trying to track enemy subs or surface vessels to achieve the mission objectives.

SH3 for sure.....preferably with GWX :arrgh!:

I didn't read the whole thread this time, but how come this is asked in a SH3 specific forum ? Shouldn't the outcome be quite obvious as it is right now anyways ?

SH IV :smug:
...but one day, a Type VIIB will be mine again  |
SH III with GWX can't be beat really (and will raise the bar again :know:) but it may be matched in about a year.
Now for folks that like modern stuff it has to be between DW or SC I guess. |
Silent Hunter 4 modded
Before that it was Sub Command and Silent Hunter 3. |

RE SH4.
If i was to draw comparisions, id say that right now, SH4, at 6 months of age, is probably where SH3 was, after it's first year. Since modding for it isnt figuring out everything again from scratch, progression comes much quicker. Looking back on my SH3,days, id say its about in that transition period from Rubini's "Harbor traffic" and the first Unified campaign mods and mayb even sometime when the first the first versions of NYGM and GW appeared. Theres still hotbuttons issues to be fixed, but by and large the game is emensly more enjoyable now. Ive pretty much worked my ass off since patch 1.3 appeared and forced me out of retirement, and am trying my best to wind my activies down now. As for progress, heres a few examples: Tater, is doing bang up job with the campaign layers. I think hes gonna give rubini a run for his money as campaign scripters go. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=116283 Oakgroove has delievered his own bit of graphical magic. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118902 Anvarts been proving that he is indeed, king of the hex editor. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118978 http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=119832 Leovampire's been delivering us an ocean that is nothing short of awesome. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...&postcount=249 http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...&postcount=272 Seaaddler has been whipping up something that's going to make Leovampires work twice as awesome: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=119553 Captain Cox has so many mods, he has his own sticky http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118341 Wernersobe's been working hard on a new damage model http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=120269 And we've even had a little press coverage from Gamespy. http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/silent-hunter-4/810022p1.html As for myself ive been doing my best to deliever a "supermod" that seems to be a Subsim tradition, sans compedative drama. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=115258 Current version on that is 1.5. Ive got a few nice things in that version, but Version 1.6 looks to be to be my last hoorah for SH modding. After that i've got to move on to other things in life. At any rate i hope that someday folks come back and check out SH4 and the pacific. Maybe not today or tommrrow, but someday. Historically, It's a story worth being told. What the pacific lacks in scale (as compared to the atlantic) , it more then makes up for in intensity of action. In some actions that occured in that theater, truth is stranger the fiction. |
Well done Ducimus to you and the other modders. I guess I should revise my prediction, SH4 will equal, and in some areas surpass SH3 in less than a year. :arrgh!:
