So you're left just sitting there watching tv or something as you slowly trudge across the atlantic to get to your hunting grounds.

That would be all well and good if there was decent hunting, but I haven't found anything better than just west of England, well close enough for the VIIs. It's mid-1942 btw.

Basically, as soon as a transfer is requested, I'm out of Lorient. Has anyone else found the Type IXs to be somewhat of a disappointment?

I think you need to start taking more time with these patrols. They just take longer, yes, but you can be very succesful.
Just stop and go to p/d and listen on the hydrophone now and then. It has greater range than your watch officer.

YEAH! :yep:

I got a career commanding a VII as well and i do notice more traffic, but that hasn't put me of hunting with the IXD2 boats which i do in the pacific.

Suggest poster #1 wait for the call to the pacific then head their, many many convoys - easy pickings for the IX boats just be very weary of the escorts:o
They hate you!

Press F1 when in the game and read the "Flotilla News I" It will tell you how you get transferred to the Pacific on first of september 1943, before this date you will get messages warning you of a possible transfer to Penang . You have to be based at Lorient for this to happen - i think.

I couldn't wait for this to turn up so i started a career in the Pacific port of Penang, get IXD2 straight away. :arrgh!: But otherwise if you want to do it the right way wait around for the above to show up.

I think VIIC is the best Sub

One curious question, whats the big difference between the type VIIB and VIIC I assume its the types of upgrades available to your conning tower? Is there any other improvements/changes made to the boat?

antikristuseke 06-25-07 07:08 PM

I dont know about vanilla SH3, play GWX. But anyway the type VIIC has a shorter dive time than the VIIB, but is slightly slower and donesnt last quite as long under water. Cant really remember any other diferences off the top of my head.

re: the IX. I finally got one. Think it's fine, but I really hate the point of view for the skipper when underwater. Hard to see the gauges unless I right-click on the chief.

Yea I am currently running GWX, I was just wondering if there was any other changes that aren't listed as the upgrade seems more of a downgrade :-? dive time is nice but so is underwater battery life.

Elysion 06-25-07 10:59 PM

I like battery life the best.

However, ive died twice now in slow diving subs near the end of my dive, i wonder if a faster boat would have prevented that... and ive never actually gone past ~20% battery or so in a VIIB... but still.. battery life makes me feel safe.

I suppose if you take the time to totally recharge your battery when you surface its no big deal. Maybe the VIIC is better =/

But the nice thing about the VIIB is you can start the war with one and go all the way through. One of these days im not going to get killed after a year or two. (Last time i was doing good, a destroyer came out of nowhere ran over my IIA ;_; that was a good little boat, it taught me how to be efficient with torpedoes, and conducted no less than three daring port raids)

its a viic 06-26-07 08:05 AM

its a viic by a nose!

VIIc has slightly more updates than VIIb. If you don't care, stick with VIIb.
Later on, the VIIc/41 is great, because you can safely dive to 240 (or greater:hmm: ).

I like the VII's better, because patrols are shorter and sub manouvrability is soo much better than the IX's. But imo the IXb is the best of the IX's.

Later in the war, divetime is critical due to increased allied air cover. For only that reason, I wouldn't take a IX outside of the atlantic gap in '44, no sir, not me.
