From the patrol point of view, given how inhospitable the North Sea is for a U-boat, and travelling through the English Channel is definately unhealthy, I wonder how much fuel is to be gained by using the canal. Once exiting the canal I then had to travel across the North Sea to sail around the Orkneys, etc?

It shortens the trip when you are assigned patrol grids east of the UK in the AN sector with a type II.
If on a VII and have to go to the Atlantic over the north, as I always go along the norwegian coast to avoid shallow waters near UK, it doesn't shorten much compared to the whole trip.

Having just got posted to Kiel I used the canal option, but beware you can only x1 time compression in it due to proximity of land perhaps and depth is only 11-13m under keel so 5-6 hours it has taken me to get through. but has been an experience, will try going the long way round on way back.

If you use SH3 commander its easy to bump up the setting for that
Or you can do it in main.cfg
Saves you going slow

Mine is set to 128TC

During to my duty in the German navy I passed the canal several times.

There is german naval tradition at the flood-gates in Kiel.
In the time where the ship is raised or lowered, the youngest crew members must try to buy soft-ice for the remainder of their group from the flood-gate office. And the buyers must be quick because the office has not enough ice for all.:arrgh!:
