Description
HISTORIC CONTEXT:

The first version to enter combat was the AM39 during the first Gulf War between Iran and Iraq from 1980 to 1988. Some 200 AM39 missiles were fired in the conflict from oil rigs. While France was developing the AM39,Iraq received ten Super Frelon SA.321 transport helicopters.New helicopters were then purchased with the ORDB 31D Heracles I radar. These helicopters were delivered between 1980 and 1981,when Iraq was already at war with Iran. The attacks began as early as October 1981. Iraqi Super Frelon helicopters launched several AM39, sinking three Iranian warships, such as the sinking of a Bayandor-class corvette, as well as several unarmed tankers. Iraq had about 150 AM39 missiles early in the war and cited 25 hits on military ships.
On April 2,1982, the Argentine Navy had in its inventory only 5 non-operational AM39 missiles, since the manufacturer had not made the corresponding technology transfer for its fusion with the Super Etendard
System. When the South Atlantic conflict broke out, Navy Engineering and Technical personnel, without foreign assistance, make this combined Weapons System fully operational. It was first successfully used on 4 May 1982, impacting and causing the subsequent sinking of the missile destroyer type 42 "HMS Sheffield" on 10 May. It was again used on 25 May 1982, attacking a naval target that turned out to be the SS Atlantic Conveyor, a civilian container ship modified as a Fleet auxiliary carrier. On 30 May 1982, in an unprecedented joint mission, the Argentine Navy and the Argentine Air Force used the last existing AM39 missile, attacking the core of the British Task Force. In the debriefing of the attack, the two surviving Argentine A-4C Skyhawk pilots (Flt Lt Ureta and Plt Off Isaac) report that they attacked with bombs and cannons a large vessel of characteristics compatible with an Aircraft Carrier, which was damaged and shrouded in smoke probably produced by the previous impact of the AM39 launched by the Navy’s Super Etendard aircraft. To date, the adversary denies such an attack.
