BACKGROUND:
WW III has been raging for a week now.
While the Pact has made some gains in Europe, they have not managed nearly the type of advances they had anticipated. At sea, the situation is still in flux. Merchant losses have been heavy, but the full weight of the American carrier battle groups has not yet been brought to bear. So far, NATO's silver bullet has proven to be its submarines. They have inflicted heavy losses on the Soviet surface fleet and presently hold a 4:1 kill ratio in their favor against Soviet subs. NATO boats have also proven invaluable as strike platforms against land based targets.
A few days ago, three NATO diesel submarines travelled north together, guarding each other during snorkeling periods. They had intended to conduct wolf pack operations near the Soviet sub base at Polyarnyy. They have been plagued by bad luck, however.
First, one unit was sunk by a Tango class SS before the other two could sink it. Then as they approached their objective, one of the remaining two boats hit a mine and was lost.
The remaining ship, a Dutch Walrus class, continued north and has run afoul of a coastal ASW group.
