As an old man of the sea (33 years old) i have enjoyed many sub sims over the years going back to Silent Service on the ZX Spectrum.:smug:
More recently ive been playing Dangerous Waters as a seawolf skipper, which is a great game but lacks a few things, mainly company, with SH3 you can at least see your shipmates in the boat giving the feeling that you are never alone in your little tin boat.:D
Im fairly new to SH3 having started playing a few days ago, so I have a few questions for the more "salty" players:-

1.In career mode is it possible to just go out on patrol for as long as you wish, maybe even visiting the Royal Navy ports of Blighty and blowing them to bits?
2.It is better to return to home ports for maintenence or can you return to any friendly port and recieve the same benefits.
3.Is there any restriction on where you sail your boat to, for example Brest to the American coast, and will there be any targets on route or do you have to create these missions yourself?

Many Thanks

1) You can go anywhere you want when on patrol (that is, if you have enough fuel).

2) By returning to some other port than your home, you cannot upgrade your boat. You just get fuel and torpedos. So, itīs better to return to home.

3) You can take your boat to the American coast, there is traffic there. But remember, most of the traffic is neutral until 1941.

Hope this answered even some of your questions!

Good hunting!

Welcome aboard!

1) You don't have to stay at sea for only the 24h in your patrol grid. It depends on the suplly of fish you have and the fuel you have. If you have both, I see nothing stooping you on fulfilling your destini and sinking a nice, fat battleship inside a port!

2)Dunno! I always return to my home port, but I heard you can do the same in a friendly port, but you can't upgrade your boat there (NOT 100% SURE). You can also milkcow and get your fish and fuel like that if you wish to spend an even extended time at sea :yep:

3)If you play campain, there are always boats around. As for SP missions, I'm not sure :hmm:

BTW, what kind of boat are those! They look nice

Nice to have a real Kaleun here!

Um... you might want to scale down the picture. The signature picture must not be over 120 pixels high and 400 wide.

Hereīs the 120 x 400 version of it.

As a sort of addendum to the info everyone else has given...

In regards to your third question, it really depends on if you're running out-of-the-box stock SHIII or if you're running any mods. I know the Grey Wolves mod includes traffic along the U.S. east coast and the Carribbean, whereas the original game didn't have much at all, if any. So you can get yourself a Type IX and go be a Drumbeater. ;)

The only thing that limits you in this game is your IMAGINATION!!!!:yep: You are the commander!

If you want to get maximum renown you should return to home base. Other than that you can go whereever you want.

I'd love to hear about what goes on inside a modern sub, what your duties are, etc. Is it nuclear? How long do you stay on patrol? I guess I could find out about that online, but I'm lazy. :smug:

SH3 is kinda like GTA: Ubootswaffe. You can do pretty much anything that a u-boat could have done. The world is how they say Dynamic. So the game manages the whole world's behavior. So the coding says that a convoy leaves Halifax on a certain day and if you run into it in your patrol after a few days the game has been keeping track of it as if it were there all the time.

Very cool. Even in single missions you can sail anywhere you like.

Unfortunately I cannot say too much about what happens on a modern day nuclear attack submarine for obvious reasons, but i will say this:-

Quite a few submariners now have laptops and when "off watch" whilst at sea on patrol can be found playing Sub Command, SH3, Dangerous Waters, Fleet Command etc.

Every submarine I have served on has had a copy of Das Boot, Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide in the mess dvd locker.

I went to Brest on HMS Tireless a few years ago and stood in the same submarine penns that I depart from on SH3.

I am also a planesman (drive the boat) whilst at sea.

Modern day submarines are not as big as they are on holywood screens, ie you can not go jogging around the boat like Denzel Washington did in "Crimson Tide".

The best things about being at sea on a submarine are:-

1.You dont need any money.
2.Doesnt matter if its raining all day or all weekend.
3.No sea sickness.
4.You can play on your laptop as much as you want without the wife moaning.
5.You can learn how to use sonar etc without having to download a 200 page pdf.

The downsides to being a submarine when you get home from patrol are:-

1.The wife makes you shave everyday
2.You forget you're home and que outside the kitchen for your scran
3.You shout at the wife for using the dishwasher in patrol quiet state
4.You tell the kids off for using too much water at persicope depth
5.You start "hot bunking" with your wife

I hope this gives you a bit of an idea anyway:up:

A short joke for you:-

Title: The Submariner's Watch
A Submariner walks into a bar and takes a seat next to a very attractive woman. He gives her a quick glance then casually looks at his watch for a moment.

The woman notices this and asks, "Is your date running late?"

"No," he replies, "I just got this state-of-the-art watch and I was just testing it.

The intrigued woman says, "A state-of-the-art watch? What's so special about it?"

The Submariner explains, "It uses alpha waves to talk to me telepathically."

The lady says, "What's it telling you now?"

"Well, it says you're not wearing any panties...."

"The woman giggles and replies, "Well it must be broken because I am wearing panties!"

The Submariner smirks, taps his watch and says, "Damn thing's an hour fast."

Welcome. I can only imagine playing SHIII at 200 meters. Talk about immersion. :arrgh!:
