Hi to the forum

My apologies for the newbie question but I have searched the forum and couldn't find a similar question or opinion (and it isn't a RTFM one either).

What Mods would people recommend installing right away? I have limited time to enjoy the game and would like to find a realistic but not too hard setup from the start. I enjoy the immersion into character and so dont want to change things once in a campaign. Saying that I do tend to play DiD and so starting again is unlikely to be completely out of the question.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Welcome,

Have a look at this thread...
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=99039

I would guide you toward GW 1.1a as it has an auto-installer and is very simple to setup. You may have to check the official GW thread in the mods section to get the best download location.

Thanks.

So much for searching the forum, I never saw that thread:oops:. The community here seems so active and the mods are generally raved about so well I wanted to make a decision asap as to what would be a good way to go. Not that I hear folk "dissing" the vanilla version but with all the tweaks and changes by real enthusiasts I dont think I can justify playing 200 hours of that before I check out the mods. Anyway I had a look at the GW website and they are firm favourites at this stage.

Thanks again for the nudge in the right direction.

First install SH3.
Second patch to v1.4b.
Third install JSGME (Run it twice to make the MODS folder and capture a snapshot).
Fourth copy MultiSH3 and SH3Weather into your install directory. Don't run either.
Fifth install SH3 Commander but don't start it.

At this point COPY the entire folder to something else like C:\program files\ubisoft\mysh3 Leaving behind a pristine, mod ready, install of SH3 you can copy again when you want to try a different supermod or have stuffed your mysh3 install so badly you need to start again. :)

Install any mods you wanted to try out into the mysh3 folder using JSGME.
Run MultiSH3 in your mysh3 folder and give it a unique 3 letter name for Careers for that install only.
Run SH3 for the first time to create your new career folder structure, exit immediately.
Add ' /l:"C:\program files\ubisoft\mysh3"' to the end of your SH3 Commander install shortcut.
Run SH3 using SH3 Commander, your custom mods and custom careers. SH3 Weather will be autodetected and start right before you enter the game.
Enjoy!

What you'll probably do is say "omg, that's too complicated, forget it!" and run GW 1.1a's wonderful install program which works effortlessly. After you've enjoyed GW to the fullest and/or destroyed your install playing around with other joyous mods (not all of which will work with each other), come back here and try it this way. :) It's more work, but it's far more expandable.

omg...... (wait, deja vu!)

Yep sounds more complicated than I'd like but not so bad that I wont chance it. Thanks for the step-by-step, it is appreciated.

Welcome aboard Gogs. Since March of this year (when I first installed SH3) I have run a vanilla SH3 patched 1.4 and heavily modded. I really enjoyed it.

This month, I installed TGW1.1a and am at present running my first patrol. SO far I like it, but I have problems with SH3 CMDR 2.5 making my crew list and personnel file. CMDR works fine with my other career (mentioned at first).

Hope to be able to get CMDR 2.5 to work with TGW as I need a crew list and the ability to manage the crew.

I too did the vanilla and patch. Added a mod or two. Put the game on the shelf for a year. Popped it in when I had seen the 1.1 GW super mod. I have not stopped playing since. I totally stopped playing IL2 and I never thought that would happen. Yesterday I installed Sober's 3D water found over on the mods page. Works fine with 1.1 GW. Awesome!

Hi. You mention Sober's 3D water mod. I tried looking for it but cannot find it. Do you know where the thread to the mod? I am using TGW1.1a.

What does that mod do to the water?

Is it similar to Kriller's Water?

I'd suggest just updating to 1.4b version first using the aforesaid patch. Then do the training academy missions & complete the exams. Then install the supermods of your choice.
This way you can start any career with 1500 renown. Putting in a supermod before completing the academy may result in less renown, as sone of the mods make it more difficult to sink ships.
