View Full Version : Massive FPS drop around Britain

Hi to everybody...

I started playing SH3 the day it was released here in Germany and since that day had a lot of fun with this game.

Especially trying all the great mods that came up as time went on.
(So thanks to all you modders out there...)

Now I'm running SH3 with GW 1.1a (with the 16 km Atmospheric Mod and no TDC Torpedo Tracking), SH3 Commander, and SH3 Gen.0.7.1. and all runs nice.

The only issue I wonder about is a massive drop in FPS when near the British Isles.
The time I reach there, if looking into a specific direction (can't recall exactly which one, but i think it's to the west) I get a really massive drop in FPS from around 60 frames to nearly 10 frames.

I'm running a P4 3.0 GHZ, 2 gb of RAM and an ATI x800XT so the game runs really smooth under normal conditions.

Now my question is: "Has anyone else recognised such in game behaviour, and perhaps can explain it to me, or even provide a solution for this issue, cause it is really annoying?"

I've found one post where somebody else has mentioned it, but I thought it would be better to open a specific thread about it, cause that thread was about another topic. Also I found a few posts where people reported massive fps drops to about 15 fps, which perhaps origin from the same issue, but I've not found a fix provided. (besides "buy a new video card" , or "turn off aa and turn down particles" which i don't think will solve this problem)

So, it would be great if someone could give some information...

There are some extensive minefields in those regions that were previously modded by someone else... which we have reworked for the upcoming GWX... Form follows function...

Whether you see them or not... the minefields are rendered in 3D. Your PC can only render so much before it starts to steal things from other places... like your conning tower... which you may find becoming transparent in places... etc etc etc.

The 8km default atmosphere mod will help you in the meantime... and should cut the number of rendered items in half... thereby restoring much of your game performance.

Go go 10, or was it 12 or 15 density for said minefields? I forgot. All i know is, any SCR layer i touch that has them in it, i immediatly go and take the density and divide it by half.

there is some way to make mines invisible and reduce the load of the game engine ??

this perhaps could helps..or not i donīt know...:88)

Brilliant suggestion... mines aren't meant to be seen at all. Going to the outside cam view just so you can sneak into a minefield is a gamey tactic that's kinda cheap. So I second this proposition, leave the mines where they are, but make them invisible (or something simple to render like a dot) and that would free a lot of video resources that are now used on things that nobody is ever suposed to see
