Hello modders.

I'd like to set the renown required for upgrades to 0 because I think that it would be in the best interest of Dönitz that his men have the best available equipment to survive and fight for the cause. So I don't understand why I should have to 'pay' for this.

Anyway, I know the renown costs are in the basic.cfg, but using SH3Commander seems to revert them back. So my question is how can I manipulate the files such that upgrades don't cost renown anymore?

Thanks in advance. Warmonger

I set my renown to zero for upgrades too, I also use SH3Commander and have no problem with the file being overwritten.

Just make sure that you rollback SH3Commander before you put in the changed Basic.cfg file.

No problem, I've forgotten to rollback more times than I remembere to rollback.

Maybe SH3 Commander will update our u-boot. We dont need renown pionts, and maybe it will be more historical correct. It is my idea. what do you think?

So I don't understand why I should have to 'pay' for this.
The idea behind doing it that way was that new equipment wasn't always readily available right away, and when it was it usually went to the commanders who were known to produce results first.

I know I've said this before, but if you're really serious about doing it historically, don't ever take the supercharger engine upgrades. The real boats from the VIIb on came with superchargers, and their real top speeds were the game's "unsupercharged" ones. With the engine upgrades the boats are much faster than they really were.

Ahhh Sailor... you just let the cat out of the bag. Now the other kaptains will know how my boat wins the weekly "Race to the Sea" at Lorient. ;)

That's very fine with me if it was done like this: You need X renown to get upgrade Y but in the process of upgrading you don't lose renown. Then it would be a fair deal. Be successful and get rewarded. But the renown and upgrade system as it is is, sorry to say, stupid IMHO.

A good point, about losing 'spent' renown. It shouldn't be that way. I just look at it like this: "Sorry, son, but you've used up all your favors. Now you have to wait in line like everybody else."

You WILL reset my renown NOW and upgrade MY boat.

I usually have enough renown to get anything I want, never saw it as an issue. I think it's a good system, but they are hiding it as it's nothing more than having to spend money for upgrades like any other game. They just give it a different name.

Point that thing somewhere else! I meant that they were saying that to me!

On the other hand, you're right again about the money part. It's just one of those things that I didn't worry about.

But changing to a bigger sub or 'buying' a big upgrade can drop you down a rank, from Kaleun to Oberleutnant. Wtf?

'I once was a Kaleun on a VIIC, now I'm just an Oberleutnant but with a bigger IXB.' Bigger boat, more responsibility, more crew, but lower rank!?! Good system? Nah I don't think so. But it's just my opinion.

Oh, I completely agree that you should never lose rank, but then I don't know how many commanders actually 'upgraded' to a new boat whenever they felt like it.

Well to my knowledge it was more like that they were offered a bigger boat due to their successes as it was modeled in AOD (sigh, good old times...), not when they felt like they wanted to have another sub type.
