View Full Version : How to make the nights lighter?

Okay, sorry if this is an old question. My nights are too dark, the watch oficer is able to spot contacts several thousands meters before it is possible for myself, which makes tageting on night surface runs impossible. I have tried running the NYGM mod and loved it and it's light nights, but my computer is too low on mem to run the mod, which is why I had to uninstall it again. But does anyone know how to manually make the nights lighter? Or point me in the direction of some small mod that does? I know about Markhimovs mod, but the horizon is still one black pitch only with a small light around my boat as is somebody is holding a torch over it

The dark in the nights is mainly caused by clouds textures, when no clouds, you will have a better night.
Try changing clouds textures.
If not, you nedd to open the enviromental and sky files with Unpacker program, unpack the textures, there are some little squares, the top left one is corresponding to the night hours, in the sky files and into the env files.
Edit this portion of the graphic to change sea and sky surface textures, to have a more clear background into sky and sea surface, this will give you a better contrast between the background and the ship silouette.
But take in account, in stormy nights, with dense clouds textures, you can do nothing for to have a clear night.
Download my enviromental files here.... not sure if they may produce conflict with your current Visibility Mod in use.... but any way you can try.
If not, you need to edit yours manually as explained above....

the heaven is stored in the sky color atl.dat
just unpack it and change the color of the sky tga in photoshop.
changing it has also the effect of a brighter night.
Easier way is to turn the gamma up on your monitor.

I found this to be a problem as well, but I resolved it fairly easily by turning the lights off in the room, which were upsetting my night-vision, and using a tiny single AA flashlight to see the keyboard. Works like a charm :-)

I'm actually having the opposite problem....which might be a solution for you....my nights are pitch black up until around 3:00am then the sky gets light as if it was dawn or a stormy day.....all the ships that I couldn't see before...can be seen pretty far away....yet visability for ai is as if it was night....where they can't see you.....and the spot lights can be seen as if it was night.....
The only sky mod I am using is "ail skymod v2"....anyone know if this is typical for this mod at 3am? this happends when its stormy with clouds....
so I think it maybe the clouds from this pack that cause it as the above post suggest. but, what has me confused is its been stormy the entire night....so if it was the clouds wouldnt it be bright at 12-2am? it goes from pitch black to where you cant see in front of your bow....to the grey skys and large visability you see below...
I am just wondering if this mod is supposed to be this bright or if it may be something else that is causing it.
to me it seems like this should be the lighting at about 6-7am...not at 3am....

May be mainly caused by high latitude and the year season, at high latitudes and in summer, you will have not a real night.
Do you remember your position and the date ?

Hi Eveyone.:D This has got to be adress'ed. This has been post'ed so much it is getting sad. " KPT. LEHMAN TO THE BRIDGE":dead: Don't beleive i did that:huh: YIKES. No more "I think" " I guess" "or maybe this" Let's get a GW Dev to post a real answer to this. This has been posted on SH-3 and SH-3 mod's on at least 7 pages it gotton to the point it need's to be taken care of once and for all. "Wheeeh" Enough said... Good Luck & Good Hunting:up:

Up really far north it should not get dark (mid-summer) or light (mid-winter) at all.
So it might have more to do with season and where you are.

Tikigod: as Redwine said it might be due to your location. The time listed is always Zulu (Greenwich) time. If you pass the cursor over the clock it will tell you your local time.

Is it possible the scene.dat has something more to do with it?
THe reason id suggest this is because ive been using one version of the sky/sea textures and a 16K visual range scene.dat. I tried swapping the dat with the one from GW11a and my nights looked just like GW's, only it wasn't using their textures. Put the old dat back and my nights were just like they were before (brighter).

I have opened the scene.dat file and it contains 4 tga's, one for the sun, one for the moon, one for fog and one called N00.tga. I more think that it has something to do with the 16 km visibility mod, which I cannot take advantage of because of my low end computer :-? . During the short period where I used NYGM and its 16 k. vis. the nights were perfect and I haven't been able to get that result since. I tried Redwine's files, but due to my setup the sky suddenly went black even during the day..........................

Sorry, it is caused sure by blend files from diferent Visibility Mods..... i must to include my Scene.dat too
Here you have if you want to try.....
http://rapidshare.de/files/37216445/Scene.zip.html (http://rapidshare.de/files/37216445/Scene.zip.html)
http://rapidshare.de/files/37223837/Env___Sky_Files.zip.html (http://rapidshare.de/files/37223837/Env___Sky_Files.zip.html)
Try to use all my installation files together with no blend with another mod files. They are from some Vis Mod but not remember wich one, with some textures modified by me.
Good luck... please coment results.

:yep: I accept the darker nights as part of the realism, what i do is use the TDC to sneak up on em with`in 500-700 meters and fill em full of eels. GW mod & SH3 Commander.
I use Marhkimov's 8k visability with light night & visual sensors set to 16k & works very well, however the 16k visability with light night does not have a Light Night!:-?

Whow... you are satisfied ! Good to know it....
The secret is to maintain the scene.dat and the enviromental and sky colours files all toghether..... do not blend them from diferent mods...

Yes, I am very satisfied :D
After I got the .scene files it all worked, and I guess that solves a lot of the questions there have been concerning what that affect the night environment, both the .env and .scene files

Any way, in stormy nights, it is too dark, the clouds has a hard effect over the night visibility, i need time to make test with new clouds textures, with non too dense clouds.
When you have a clar sky, the nights are very clear too, with an excellent night visibility.

@Redwine:
:hmm: Yes, but isn't that how it's supposed to be? I mean, visibility should drop with bad weather. I have not tried a real storm yet with these new files, but in calm and normal weather it's perfect.

Yes... you are right, that is a fact why i done nothing with clouds textures yet, stormy nights must be very dark.
The files works so good in clear nights and in partially cloudy nights, and as in real life, in stormy nights it is so dark.

Yeah :D so all in all it's actually..................perfect!
By the way, since I have one of the top notch "SHIII technicians" here, I have a couple of more qustions that yoou might be able to answer for me.
The first one is regarding the LND. layer files for the campaign. As far as I understand it is possible to alter this with the mission editor. If I dock at a harbour during a patrol and then alter for example the position of a U-tanker or add one more or alter with the bases etc., these kind of things, would this then cause a game crash or destroy any of the other units' waypoints and behaviour when I start the game up again?
The second one is U-boat availability dates. It annoyes me, in my game they are way off, what files determine the availability dates? And my type VIIC/41 and VIIC/42 seem to have gone missing.
Sorry for all of the questions, but I am an amateur when it comes to this modding

I have not experience modding the campaign files, sorry....

I dont know....but imagine if you change the abailability of a determined sub, in example for six months later .... just imagine a mission where you have asigned this sub.... six months before your files says it will be abilable... :hmm:

Forget, you are welcome.... this is a "help you...help me" subcommunity....
Sorry if i cant help you with these questions, may be you must to ask the campaign modders.....

If you are docked at port you can make the changes - always make sure you back up your files in case of error
Moving a utanker is no problem in Mission ed - as they are usually in the middle of the Atlantic they are pretty much isolated
You can add another one ok too
How do you mean alter with the bases ?
Waypoints are more difficult to deal with
If you are moving units in tight areas such as Harbours it can lead to problems
If you open up the RND or SCR in mission ed you can see the other units waypoints
Out at sea its not a problem so much as the timings\dates maybe different

I use markimovīs light night mod with a bit of gamma correction , with 1, 47 of gamma value its perfect for my setup , cloudy nights are darker than clear nights.
also i use a red or blue bulb in my room that makes easy see the dark screen

Yes, Marhkimov mods was wonderful, but sadly in that moment those visivility mods do not solve my dark night problems, attempting to rise up my gamma produce for me a loss of colour intensity, colours become "washed", then i was enforced to amke my own personalization of the files.
Finally i obtain a good night visivility without to increase gamma and loss colour intensity.

I cant believe you !!!! :D
No te puedo creer Hartmann ! en serio usas una luz roja en la habitacion ? :D
