View Full Version : Less ocean traffic & aircraft in GW

From what I understand, the GW mod corrects the ocean and aircraft traffic to more historically accurate numbers. Is this true, since it seems there's significantly less contacts since installing the mod?
I liked the more frequent contacts in the stock game, even if it was inaccurate, or is this my imagination? (Yes, I'm following the shipping routes on the map)

No there are probably more ships out there at the right times but that doesnt mean to say you will be shown them all on the map
The shipping routes arent set in stone either - they are there for a guide other wise you may as well sit in one place and wait for them to sail to you
Get out there and hunt Fraulein

I haven't noticed any changes to the shipping, but since installing GW, I've NEVER seen or been attacked by an enemy aircraft. Only seen friendlies when leaving port, and once had a squadron of stukas attack a lonely small merchant I was stalking.

*nod* Before GW I used to always get attacked by aircraft shortly after leaving port. The one time I got attacked after installing GW was by one twin-engine something. I know I hit it several times with the flak gun, but there was no apparent damage. Whereas, pre-GW they'd be trailing smoke or even crash.

Yes thats because stock aircraft would have crashed if you'd have thrown Bernard at them
Now they are tougher and the gun no longer blasts them out of the sky

I'm in late 42 Loriente and there are no friendly aircraft as I leave base. This is my second career and I remember in first one there were always two of them.Anyone know why?
I think its to litlle aircraft action in GW, thats my only complaint.
i thought that also ... untill in my 28th patrol january 1945 i got myself transfered to bergen on the entire war i never saw an enemy plane , so when the watch said plane sighted instead of diving i went outside to see what they where ... B-24s !!!!! the dive order was too late ... that was my end.

Regarding aircraft:
If you want more of them, off the top of my head, i *think* all you need to do is replace one cfg file. I'm at work currently and thus dont have any files infront of me, but here's what i would do.
Go to uboot-realsimulations.com and look for Jayce's Improved Airpower mod. D/L this and extract JUST the CFG file located in data/cfg/ . I forgte the exact name, but its NOT the AI_crew.cfg or sim.cfg that's probably there as well, its the other one, will have "air" somewhere in its name. Use this file, and replace the existiing simiarly named file in the gw/data/cfg directory and renable the mod, or dont disable/renanble GW at all anddrop it directly into sh3/data/cfg so you have a pseudo backup of the orginal file in the GW mod directory.
Having done that, you should see more aircraft.

Want action? Load UBWAC 1.7 on top of GW1.1a
Never a dull moment. I did a career like that and loved every patrol. Only complaint I could possibly have had was when when I did stupid things to myself, especially in the late war. <I think I'll go ahead and shoot down that bomber......dummy>
I loved that combo for a while, before I switched to UBWAC 1.92 full version. It's my favorite out of all the supermods. Plenty of targets [that actually sink]. Harder then stock but not as unforgiving as the other ones. And there isn't a bunch of "broken boat" tweaks in the name of realism. Supposed to be an update coming out soon.

airstrike.cfg in the data/cfg directory. You can modify the airstrike probabilities. I'm not an expert, but I tried messing with it and couldn't figure out a good combo. Probably best to use one someone "designed" rather than a clutz like me hacking at it.

I dont have the files infront of me so its not like i can post anything more specific then where to get a good replacement file. Much easier to explain. :D

Haven't had a go with GW yet, but I can tell you aircraft in NYGM are a complete B*TCH....
Haven't tested their ability to resist damage because I've not shot at one - if I can I dive quickly!!! Managed to dive every time so far, although have beem straffed and had small bomb dropped on me by a Hurricane - the bomb missed and the MG rounds hit an empty bridge area.

Went to U-boat.realsimulation.com and am confused which file to d/l. U-boatWarAce v. 1.7.7 is a standalone. Is that the right file? Also couldn't find v1.92 full version. What about Uboat-War-Ace 2.7z? Thanks.

I honestly dont recommend installing another large mod on top of another unless your VERY FAMILIAR with sh3 fire structures and how certain files interact with others. It's not always a simple drag and drop, infact, most of the time it's not.

Get it here:
http://www.realhp.de/members/hansolo78/index.html
Click downloads, scroll down to :Grey Wolves Compatible Version 1.7:
The 1.7 version was specifically done to write over the top of TGW.
Install.....
SH3
Patch 1.4b
TGW 1.1a
UBWAC 1.7
In that order. (Of course, use JSGME if possible. It works great.)
You'll still have the Grey Wolf interface, but you'll have the UBWAC Historic campaigns and a few other extras.
================= or ============================
The 1.92 version(s) of UBWAC are standalone supermods, just like TGW and NYGM, the main difference is the interface changes and graphics, along with the historical campaigns. To me there isn't much difference between NYGM and TGW interface, but UBWAC is a whole different feel. If you want something different, try the 1.92.
Install:
SH3
Patch 1.4b
UBWAC 1.92
There are 2 versions of 1.92 UBWAC. One is graphic intensive and packed full of eye candy, the other one is a lighter version for older weaker machines. Both of them are great supermods. If you tag along with some of the German tasks groups, it's fun to watch them engage allied groups. Just follow them out of the harbor.
I agree with what Ducimus said about "mixing" supermods, but using the 1.7 version isn't mixing, it was written specifically to use with TGW.

I understand and don't want to install a mod on top of GW that causes problems, but I'm finding since installing GW the action level has gone down significantly (except in harbors). For example, for the last three nights I've encountered nothing but open ocean while following shipping routes and traveling thousands of kilometers and have only encountered one plane since the install and then when hitting the aircraft with the flak gun that would cause the plane to crash or trail smoke in the stock version, it kept attacking with impunity. Combined with the dumbed down warships and wimpy depth charges, even when right on top of my sub, the fun-factor of SH3 has decreased. I appreciate realism, but the fun-factor has to be taken into account when figuring realism.
Watching the beautiful graphics can only go so far.

If you aren't doing hydrophone sound-checks in GW periodically... you aren't going to find any traffic. Single-contact radio reports in GW have been greatly reduced in probability.
There's buckets of traffic out there. You just have to hunt for it.:arrgh!:
Being a U-boat commander isn't all about bringing home a big haul every patrol.;)
The worst thing in SH3 in my opinion... is the ridiculous tonnages brought down on a regular basis.:yep:

I've taken regular hydrophone readings during the last three SH3 sessions.
Anyway, I'm downloading the War Aces mod and am going to give it a spin. :)

Another thing you can do is go to your data/cfg/contacts.cfg.
Theres TWO variables in there that deals with radio/ship contacts, IE, how far away the game will report them. Double or triple the existing number there (i think its in the neighborhood of 300 to 500) and im sure you'll see more traffic ;) Although be careful not to open the radius too wide, you'll be flooded/spammed with contact reports. Handy for testing purposes though, you can get a rough feel for the entire ocean's traffic if you bring the contact radius out wide enough.
