This is an old bug and im not sure anyone has noticed. Infact you won't notice it until you decide to put an IX/1 conning tower on an IXC or D uboat and couple it with the singe shot flak gun.
To understand this bug, you have to examine the IXB uboat, and how it behaves with this setup. SImply put, when you man the flak guns with an IX/1 tower and a heavy flak, it behaves as normal. You have three slots for AA crew. One for the 2cm on the cigarette deck, and two for the heavy flak on the main deck.
On an IXC (and D, jsut as an experiment i tried it, same behavior on both), you'll get three AA crewman slots with the same setup but what happends is you'll get one crewman manning the heavy flak, and two manning the one 2cm on the cigarette deck. The overlapping one doing his impression of jesus. If you try to man the heavy flak, you'll get , "not enough crew". I think the 2cm still works however.
If you remove the 3rd overlapping crewman on the 2cm you'll still be in the same situation. I have noticed that if you remove one of the crewman (which one seems to be random), the guns will work as normal, and they shouldn't. The heavy flak should require two, but yet, by removing the middle crewman im able to man both the heavy flak and the 2cm, and both will fire.
So if you wanted to use both, thats an adhoc, work around i guess, but who really wants to juggle their crewman like this? Man the guns and start shooting you <insert colorful explanitive here>!
So as near as i can figure, for whatever reason the IXC and D uboats are expecting two crewman, not three. Offhand i don't think its a problem with the IX/1 tower itself, because its the same tower that is afixinig itself onto an IXB uboat, and that works. So the problem, im theorizing is specific to the IXC and D uboats themselves. In a way it explains why the IXC uboats never sported an IX/1 tower in the stock game to begin with, even though its historically inaccurate that they never had the ix/1 tower.
So anyone have ideas their willing to share? I tend to post questions like this occasionally and nobody says anything. I think if we're lucky its some configuration file somewhere, but i can't find it if it is. More then likely its some hardcoded node in the IXC/D uboats. If thats the case i wonder if its possible to duplicate the IXB uboat, and give it the IXC's ID stamp so the game would accept it. I don't think theres anything else that distingush's the IXB from the IXC except its specifications whch are easily changable.
I can post screenshots later if anyone wants a clarification on what im talking about.
