ok so iM running GW supermod + SH3 commander, right? u gonna havta take my word 4 that!

i used up (in '39) all my torps + all my HE rounds for the 88 gun. sunk some cargos, a trawler, a Ttransport, went INSIDE scapa flow! and survived. sunk a tanker right at docks!!!:smug:
i got very good performance out of my deck gun personel (w/o qualifications btw) so i wanted to reward them on shore but forgot (didnt write down:()1: ) their names, so :damn: but i got a Q!
in SH3 commander, there are many many many more medal possibilities than in stock SH3. how do i use this SH3 commander capibility to the fullest? how to award medals well? there are WOUNDED medals even for those that were not wounded. i should remember that myself, right? who was wounded on patrol? award AFTER patrol?
also why do (most computer sims have this problem i think) i have a ridiculously small LEUTENANT post when iM clearly a captain?:ahoy:

p.s. do u try to (sometimes) make a torp deep and make it blow by the magnetic pistol UNDER a ship? does it work better for u? it worx maybe half the time for me.
i probably got some other Qs but cant remember 'em not (too drunk & sleepy)
thnx!

That will have to be answered by someone with more experience than myself.

"Captain" is not only a rank, it is also a title. The "Captain" of a PT Boat might only be an ensign, lower even than a lieutenant. Early in the war the skipper of a smaller U-boat might be a leutnant, but more often than not he was a kapitan-leutnant, or lieutenant commander. With SH3 Commander you should get that rank following your first patrol. The rank "Captain" is so senior that you should only get it when you are out of the boat and commanding a squadron, or in command of a battleship.

In real life having the torpedo explode under the ship gave it a chance of cracking the keel and sinking the ship quickly. The problem was that torpedo depth-settings were sometimes faulty and the fish would run too deep, thus not going off at all. Again, the magnetic pistol would sometimes pick up the ship's magnetic field too soon, causing a pre-detonation. The magnetic torpedo promised to be much more effective than an impact pistol, but until these problems were solved it was a pain to use.

In the game, the magnetics work too well, at least early in the war.

it seems to ... however i play on about 90% realism...duds is one of those things...

in the u-boat info ive read the early war torps were not to reliable...many commanders complained of these problems....

I think I can answer these questions:

If I recall correctly, the game will automatically award a wound badge to every wounded crewman. You can award any medal via SH3 Commander after a patrol based on your own criteria, but you will have to remember who to give them to.

If I recall correctly, the lowest ranked U-boat commander was a Leutnant zur See. Most commanders started as Oberleutnant zur See. In RUb and SH3 Commander we tried desperately to adjust this so that players could choose their starting rank, but we couldn't make it stick without weird bugs popping up. In RUb I adjusted the requirements so that players received the rank of Oberleutnant zur See after their first patrol - that was the best solution I could come up with.

Hello stranger. ;)

Only guys that are still wounded when docking get the medal. If the guy is patched up at sea, he won't get it. Weird.

One I still use. I treat the first patrol as the "shakedown" cruise, or whatever you want to call it, that real new Kaleuns sometimes did. For me this simulates the new Kaleun getting to know his crew and getting to know his sub. It's like I received a message from BdU stating "Lt Jones, head to <port> and take command of <U-whatever>. By the time you've familiarised yourself with the boat and crew, your promotion will have come through".

Personally, I don't see every patrol as being something where I have to go out and sink 100,000 of ships! LOL! Indeed, hehe, prior to SH3Cmdr including the malfunctions feature, I would randomly (via the old dice throw) return to base after the obligatory test dives so I could simulate the feeling of frustration. No need to now though. :)

Thanks guys. I'm thinking about taking out the old tub on a cruise. See if I can catch some merchants off guard again. I haven't played the game since I got burnt out on SH3 Commander and RUb 2.0 all those months ago.

Well it'll be cold in Beantown soon enough. So you'd better get SHIII back in shape for those long cold winter months. ;)
