View Full Version : The difference between NYGM and GW

OK, both make SH3 more realistic. Sure both bring better quality, but what are the main differences. What makes someone choose GW or NYGM. I'm using GW, bacause I saw that things look nicer :) and that it was more realistic (I chose the graphic compenent over the realistic one).

Now I haven't done much research into this question, so I would like to hear the arguments of both sides of possible, to tell the difference and why they chose what they chose.

:hmm:

NYGM is harder.

I use GW, because I see this as a game, and I want to have fun too.

These kind of threads tend to get ugly on some point. :rotfl:

Anyways, to give you the big picture:

NYGM = Striving for maximum realism on the gameplay.

GW = Aiming for realism too, but not so 'seriously' as NYGM. Oh yeah, and tons of new sounds and graphics is added.

This is how I see it. Others can get in to the details.

"The difference between NYGM & GW" - Answer = alot

I mainly use GW as it has a nice balance of graphics/immersion and realism, but have recently put a second install with NYGM 2.2 to try out the hardcore realism aspect. I don't think I'm ready for this much realism yet.

Try both and make your choice:yep:

THX, but I really don't want to get messy with double installs or the Generic Mode Enabler (I'm sure that this statement is going to bite me in the *** one day)

I felt the same way with multi-installs, however I gave it a go the other day and made it work.
If you don't want to use the mod enabler then don't. Just have one install called GW & one called NYGM in your programs folder(place shortcut for each on desktop). Then use the excellent MULTISH3 program to make certain that you save games don't get muddled up.

Multish3 found here

Note. Don't forget to rename your desktop shortcuts.(my mistake first time round)

One is better than the other, is that what you wanted to hear?

I'll settle it, UBWAC is the best one, TGW and NYGM tie for 2nd and 3rd.

From personal experience they both have their positives and negatives. What I did was play a career with GW then installed NYGM and am play a career with that. Try em both, you wont be disappointed.

As far as what make NYGM more hard core? For me its the no gods eye veiw. I can no longer use the map screen to tell me which way the ships are moving and which ones are merchies or warships. I have to actually spend some time on the bridge figuring that out for myself. And I gotta tell ya, it sux at first but becomes VERY gratifying when you get the hang of it.

Another thing in NYGM is aircraft - they've been worked on so now they strafe you with cannon/mgs as well as drop bombs/DCs....they are ugly....you definitely crash dive while changing course ASAP!!!

The only way your going to find out is try them both yourself...... there is not a correct answer here, only the one you arrive at once you have tried both. This question can only be answered by the individual according to his own perception of what is "realistic" etc.....

Try Both, pick one or pick both

the choice is yours, either way you win

Well said! The choice is really based on individual preference. If you ask this question on these boards you are going to get a lot of individual answers. Since these boards are full of individuals you are going to get lots of individual perspectives. The only way for you as an individual to get a good answer if you try both mods out for yourself individually and make up your own individual mind.

Here's one NYGM user.

With "No weapon officer assistance" and "No external camera," you get a hardcore play.

First of all, forget about those "Manual TDC tutorials." Your sub can't hover and thus you basically shoot torps while you're moving. Sound contact bars are obfuscated (it's from RuB originally -- and I hate this because it's ugly) thus you can't "mark."

"Range to nearest contact" is disabled, so without weapon officer assist, there is no way to get range except using the damn stadimeter. Remember, you will never be able to find enemy speed without first knowing the range.

At this point, the "map" in the game is basically for plotting your overal course. Since you see nothing but obfuscated sound contact bars on the map, planing an attack on the map is no different doing on a real peice of paper on your desk.

6 *real world* hours of finding nothing is possible.

8 *real world* hours of being tortured by an escort is possible. Plan well before you play. Your entire real day can easily be occupied by just trying to escaping from escorts (and dead at end, you'd be so exhoasued and frustrated...)

Basically, you should play like:

Forget about deck gun in most case.
Forget about fighting with airplane. When an airplane, JUST dive as soon as possible.
Forget about attacking on day time except the target is lone, an-armed merchant.
Forget about attacking on storm. It'd be waste of torp and effort.
If you're serious about sinking an enemy ship, be eagar to spend more than 1 torp on a target. Be stingy and you'll be likely get NOTHING. Oh, prepare for depth charges then!

Attacking convoy is not an easy hunt now. First, you get radio info about a convoy. You'll try to set up intercept coruse. Depending on the range to the intercept point, there may be many times you end up finding nothing but spent lots of fuel. If you fortunately intercept the convoy, do not try to attack until very dark. If weather's not good, postpone your attack... this may be a WEEK until you can attack.

So, it's this kind of hardcore. It's slighty too hardcore for myself :D And if you plan to restrict your time compression to 128x like them, bring a book or something while you play because you spend hours doing nothing but hourly "sound check." Oh but did I say prepare for spending a whole day for action once it's started?

It's good, very good  but obviously it's not for casual player or busy person who can spend only a few hours for playing. It's for torturing yourself, trying your patience by yourself. I'd never want to be on the real thing :know:.

Got some idea?

Each mod tries to improve the game, which one is best??
It's upto you the player, i must say though if you can..have a dual install and have the best of both worlds and download them both

@jimmie.. I also use NYGM 2.2 at 100% realism and if anybody asked me what I did last weekend, this statement just about sums it up. Sunday 8 p.m., finally tore myself away from the monitor with my eyes popping out of my head !

The NYGM and GW thing ? I use both but also WAC which is excellent in it's own right and Frontflotille but tread very carefully if you you're thinking of installing this one [better on a seperate Computer]

I've played GW, but recently I've been using NYGM because of the 3rd Flottilla mod that I need for WaW. There are some things that I like about GW, and there are some things that I like about NYGM. Its impossible to choose which one is the best.

NYGM is really big in the randomizing. Trying to recreate the uncertainty a kaleun was facing. It is also interfering minimally with the audiovisuals of the game.

GW is an overall upgrade, really ambitious, not a bit is left untouched. sounds, visuals, realism, campaign. To me, it is a bit too much. I tend to stick with NYGM, but you can now easily try both mods and make your own mind. A guy released a tool that makes it easier to run several installs. I intend to use this for the next GW release. Finish 1 patrol in NYGM, go on next patrol in GW, then try 3rd patrol in NYGM. Then I will find out if I can ever decide :rotfl:

I like the eye candy and just a bit more of realism.

So I'll just stick with the GW mod and hope for GWX to come out!

As I understand your post, O MIGHTY GW MOD LEADER!!!, you are felling sorry, for not being able to play alot with your constant work.

We're all with ya 110%!

Why don't you relax a bit, go sink a few Brits, go smell the flowers, and THEN go back to the workshop :smug:

It might help! :yep:

Thanks Respinus... (Please don't refer to me as "great and mighty" though... makes me very nervous and expect a lightning bolt to fry me... I put my pants on one leg at a time.)

LOL, Yes you can be trapped by your own creations. It's okay though. I'll be able to really play GW eventually... but not before I feel like we've given 100% of what we can do.

Aint it a bitch. I mean, you mod to improve the game you play so you can really enjoy it more, and in the process, you never get to play. It sucks. Im in a constant state of play and tinker, play and tinker. I can never just sit down and PLAY and accept the game as its presented to me no matter who's worked on it.
