Does anybody have a manual or aide memoire for torpedo settings?

How fancy do you want to get? There's everything from SNAPSHOTS, to match bearing rate and shoot, to my personal favorite... cleverly spaced spreads of multiple torpedoes intended make escape possible for anyone as far away as the first convergence zone. You need to be able to make a calculator really work for you to pull off the last one. :D

Torpedoes are very smart little creatures in my experience. When you work out the math, they have the highest search rates of any platform in the game. Given that, it's often best just to dial something rough in and let the torpedo do the work.

Torpedoes in Dangerous waters are great. I've seen/done everything above surface from drop a torpedo into 175 foot deep by 200 square foot window of water in an ice sheet to sink a sub a mile away. To even having a torpedo get confused between my FFG and the enemy sub.

A skilled pilot/remote helo controller (manual helo from FFG) can use 1 torpedo to kill you without you having any warning until you hear the sonar operator scream "Torpedo in the water!!!"

SQ ,I have muddled along using my own settings for a while-I was just looking for something a bit more scientific and usable. Some golden rules as it were for torpedo settings and also spread patterns and other info.

My point is that there's only so much value to be extracted from more scientific approaches on account of the torpedo search rate being so high. Very frequently the best thing to do is just get a rough idea of the target's position and let the torpedo do the work. Frankly, it's smarter than you are. I spend a lot of time working out Ekelund ranges, tracking bearing rates, etc. and I still find myself asking, "Why is the torpedo going over there?" Answer: I was close, but no cigar.

It's also unclear how much more usable it'd be for someone who wasn't a serious naval enthusiast. By that I mean, you're perfectly comfortable sitting down and working out problems with a maneuvering board, have a working understanding of search theory, and spend a lot of time doing things like estimating areas of uncertainty surrounding your target.

Part of what's fascinating to me about naval warfare is that it's mathematically intensive (and always has been). If you really want to get into that aspect of things, the best thing to do is just start reading up on the subject extensively, and then let your creativity go to work. I've recommended books before that contain what you need to know.

Besides, the bottom line is, provided your TMA is half way decent, you should be able to secure a reasonable likelyhood of hitting a target. Wire guidence and the torpedo's own sensors give you a great deal of leeway. Being clever about your presets and doing good TMA just means that you have more leeway to spare. :-)

unfortunately the torps simulated are nowhere near the real torps which can do oh so much more they can be prest to attack certain type of foes surface subsurface meaning that the weapon will ignore the wron type of target also the weapon can tell you what its traking on passive and when it goes active it tells you the solution to the target course speed and range also indiction of depth the games torps are very dumb

The torpedoes in the game are different from real torpedoes but the essentials are there. The torpedoes in the game are quite smart, developing a better picture of what's around them than most people can with their sonar. Just because you can't SEE it on your screen, doesn't mean it isn't happening. Also, as I've said before, they have an extrodinarily high search rate. What more do you want from a torpedo, really? The rest is bells and whistles.

I mean... yeah... I wish all my shoes were Prada but sometimes the cute ones from Payless look just as good.

Given that, I'd argue the best tactic is to develop just enough of a picture to make sure the target is in range, and let 'er rip. The torpedo can do the rest.
