View Full Version : Sicillian Wedding question
I'm about to try a shot at the Sicilian Wedding mission from SubGuru, but before I start can anyone tell me whether or not TLAMs are required to complete the mission and if so how many should I equip? I'ld hate to get 10 hours into the mission and realize that I have to start over because I didn't equip enough.... :o :damn: :)
Anyone know?
I am going into that one as well.
Spoiler........................................... .....
I am not sure however how we can be successful at no being detected by the OHP in the Tango area when our SAO needs to be pretty high to be at the North East corner. Any tricks.... Bill.....
Thanks
I've gotten past the OHP pretty handily. If you launch a XBT it will should a pretty handy surface duct to hide under. I hit about 1000 ft and 12 knot SOA and snuck past the OHP pretty easily. The tricky part is not coming up above the layer while the OHP active sonar is pointed directly at you; if close enough he will ping you even if your nose is away. There's alot of luck to it.
still not sure about the TLAMs. I equipped 4 just in case and hopefully that'll be enough to play through the entire scenario.

If you are playing it accurately you'd stock up with TLAMs only as they don't carry TASMs any more so that should help.

Actually, the instructions with the mission brief says to load TASMs. They will be needed at one point in the mission when your sub 'simulates' a cruise missile attack against a US carrier taskforce.
TLAMs are not required.

I've also got a question:
*Spoiler Warning*
At one time in the mission you're told to photograph a Sub. I tried it (yes I was in range ) but I didn't score any points for it. Does anybody know why?
I had the same thing with the sub photographing. But my experience is only from SC 1.08+SCXIIc. Don't know what Bill did to the DW version. Also it's been quite a while (2 years) since I fixed it for myself. So I don't know exactly which goal number it is.
--------------- spoiler ------------------------------------
In my game the problem was that the goal won't trigger unless ownship is at or above a certain minimum depth. And this depth was shallower than the 688i's periscopedepth setting. Unless I manually ordered a shallower depth the goal didn't trigger. So I edited the mission to the required depth setting.

Did you check your radio messages afterward?

Did you mean the message saying that HQ confirms that I've been trailing a french Sub? Yes, I got that one but the "Photograph the Sub" mission is not completed.

For the photo part...for me it was a full blown bug. I could not get it to work no matter how mandy different variations I attempted to fix the problem. I finally "fixed" the issue by editing the mission file. Instead of "photograph sub," I believe I changed that part of the goal to "mark sub with periscope." Seemed like a reasonable fix.

Bill I recently downloaded this mission for SC and i think you have changed it.The original scenario for Gaeta harbour was to sink two static merchantmen then escape out of the harbour pursued by asw helicopters.I always thought this was a very tough but rewarding mission. The current mission seems to have been rewritten. Can you still supply the old one?

:-? I've made no changes to the Gaeta harbor mission.
I think it was a software anomaly. It would not populate the area with the appropriate items.I have loaded it again and it is all there now.I didn't honestly think you had made it that easy Bill!
So finally was there an answer to how we are supposed to take a picture of that French sub, because for myself too it just doesn't work.....
Too bad I loved that scenario so far.
Hopefully somebody has an answer
Bill...
Thank you
Ok,
So I am guessing there are nothing we can do about those sub picture (French sub).. Because it's just doesn't work.
Too bad
Ok then,
Didn't really have an answer, so I guess this is a bug.
I will carry on this mission without achieving this goal
I think you need to get within 4000 yards of it with the scope up and take a picture.Sometimes the rubis is submerged but it can be done!
Was inside 4000yds many times and didn't work.
Would like to know if someone was successful at this? If yes please let me know.
Thank you

I got the same problem . Within 4000 yards took a photo no joy. Checked radio messages no joy.

I've looked at the logic for this many times and simply can't find the bug. :damn: I'm sure there is one (enough players have experienced it)... I'm tempted just to kill the bugger and let the player bypass this goal.

There is a way... observe the enemy's search patterns and go where he doesn't.

There is a way... observe the enemy's search patterns and go where he doesn't.Affirmative... every time I tried the frontal approach, I failed.

Yeah i try to get in from the west but the orion pc3 allways finds me as soon as i go above the thermal layer.
Well, in that case. Many people went to the east part of the world to find their 'enlightenment'. ;)

I photographed it at approx 5.30hrs, marked it, nothing happened. Then at 6.15hrs I quit trailing, and proceeded to a point of meeting with a helo carrying umpire, when at 7.00hrs radio operator recommended to copy the broadcast. When i got to PD and extended antenna, I received a confirmation about a French sub. So, it works...not the way I expected, but it works :hmm:
Back to the original topic. Sicillian Wedding.:D
Good Luck picking up umpire from the hovering helo.:rotfl::rotfl:
Never could get past that part of mission. Good Luck:D:D

Lane:DNobody went off-topic. It was all about Sicillian Wedding, just different parts of it where discussed simultaneously.
Picking up the umpire is indeed tricky. You need to be real close and at the right spot at the right time with the helo.

Hmm, what can I say...I am not a phenomenally skilled player, far from it, but for me picking up the umpire worked right away. I ordered full stop at a designated point. Helo passed me by, I'd say approx. 100 yards from me, and about a minute or two after umpire was on board. So my 688 definitely wasn't directly below the helo for a pickup.
It crossed my mind that I probably should be right in the helo's path. So I even tried to steer into position when helo was pretty close, and I did order 2kts as to cross my direction with helo, but 2kts definitely wasn't enough and I didn't make it. Still, umpire got onboard.
Sorry  About the remark about the topic.
That's Just shows I am not very good at getting the Sub at the correct
Postion and on time. Just never could make the pick up.
Thank's for the comeback. Guys And good Luck on the rest of mission.

I certainly hope he's joking.
I just want to say how happy I am that people are still playing my 'Sicilian Wedding' megascenario.
The part about following the surfaced diesel sub is based on a real-life experience I had on Nautilus during our 1977 Med deployment. We were playing 'rabbit' for a P-3 Orion one night, when they radioed us that they had spotted a confirmed Soviet Foxtrot on the surface just a few miles from our position. Curiously, the sub had her navigation lights on and was booking north toward the French coast!
We took position behind and followed her all night at periscope depth, with a big 'rooster tail' being created every time we raised the 'scope. (The P-3 pilot, in the meantime, had already gone home and was probably downing a few in the O-club, telling his companions about his 'find'). When daylight finally broke, we discovered we had been following a French sub that was returning to port. :damn:
Guess, I should clear things up about Posting on topics on this forum.
Sometimes I write a Replys on a topic in hast:cry:. With out reading all the Reply's and not study what folks are writing about. Again I am sorry.
I have DW and SC installed but I am no season Player.:D. When i was young
I would go see all the WW2 Sub Movies and Loved to watch the Sub's surface and Dive. And still do with SC and DW. I was in Navy 55-59
but was a Airdale. Made AT3, E4 before before my time was up.
Next time I will read all the topics comments. before I jump in.
Thank's Bill for sharing that with us about the French Sub.
If post a comment or something that sounds dumb. Well Just say Lane is having a "Senior Moment":D
I check all the DW and SC forums daily and Love to read the topics.
I should just read them. And stop at that.:D
Have a good one.

Well, if it's any consolation for you Lane, there is no way, NO WAY I can pass the Gaeta harbour mission...I can photo the sub, pick up the umpire, but I'll be damned if I ever successfully pass the Gaeta part :nope:, and God knows I've been trying several times now already, since we revived this topic. I tried east, west, slow speed, sneaking through bad sonar condition areas, stopping, sometimes reversing, every approach I could think of, and yet I end up :dead::dead::dead:. DEAD. If the FFG doesn't find me, Orions damn sure will, but the FFG usually pings the hell out of me, and then Orion simply makes his drop and the fish blows me away.
Man, after all 688ing and Sub Commanding, DW Gaeta still makes me feel like a total n00b......:damn:
So, you see Lane, each one of us got his own cross to carry.
Yet again I must say that there is no such thing as 'bad sonar condition area' in DW. This was proven myth several times.

Well, that explains a lot. I somehow missed that myth, if I knew it, it would save me a lot of time. :yep:

So, you see Lane, each one of us got his own cross to carry.East is possible (and I mean REALLY east), but you need to take care of your aspect towards the nearest ping-er when you get close. And go slow/all stop when very close. Once he is well passed you can add some knots back and return to course. Tricky but doable.
(Spoiler:There is another surface enemy, but it's not a FFG. Sneak by him as close to shore as you can.)
