View Full Version : Coastal Lightships?

Coastal lightships:
I don't know how common they were in the rest of the world or if they were even in operation along the u.s. east coast during WWII, but i know of one that was sunk in WWI near the shore of North Carolina (Diamond Shoals Lightship #71 sunk by U-140 in 1918). During the first few months of drumbeat the u.s. didn't really adhere to a coastal blackout even if there were no lightships in operation.
Question to the shipwrights or lighting gurus: Has any one ever attempted to mod such a ship?? Is there any interest??
I think it would be a great atmosphere addition to place one at the entrance of certain harbors instead of a lighthouse or at certain map locations such as cape lookout or cape hatteras along the u.s. east coast or any other area in the world that might of used them. (unfortunantly it won't be able to be made by me any time soon as i'm just starting to fiddle with basic file changes:nope: ) . Just curious if any one has attempted such or if it is even feasible?

I'd love to see a light-ship, especially one with a working light.

Its not eye-candy as you call it. It would be a new merchant.

Not really a new merchant as it would look silly in the middle of a convoy so its really eye candy for ports
Still a great idea though
I was going to start kitbashing one out of the Tugboat tonight, but I am having problems with Wings3d. I have started an appropriate thread asking for advice on what went wrong.

Here is a nice pic of a lightship that was built in Australia in 1913 and was removed from service in 1983!!

bookworm_020,
Just curious, do you know of any lightships still in use in your area?? If i remember correctly, the ones here (at least in north carolina) were phased out. I believe the diamond shoals and frying pan shoals ones were replaced by modified derricks with light towers in the 60's and 70's.

Hi U-snafu,
All light ships in australia have now been removed from service. The Carpentaria Lightship shown in the photo was used in the gulf of Capentaria till 1983, then moved to Bass straight and used there till 1985! More photos and quick details on the lightship can be found below.

This is a link to the cleaning and maintaince of the light ship in the Gulf. Not a job I'd like!!:o

Just wanted to say that despite the fact that Wings3d refuses to work properly on my laptop, I am going to try to kitbash a lightship anyway. Hopefully, the problem is just a graphical one which will nort affect the operation or results of work done with the program. I couldn't do anything over the weekend because of a law assignment, and I also have a final exam for a law foundations course on Friday, but I should find some time this week to work on the vessel.

AG124--thank you!!!! take your time and good luck on the exam. just grateful your gonna try it!!
bookworm_020---thanks for the info and link--After spending some time on the N.C. outer banks over the last few years i've become interested with the history of lighthouses and the past coastal livesaving service (now U.S. coast guard).
Looks like it's going to work. Of course, I don't have anything presentable yet but I should by the weekend (or maybe even sooner).

Great to hear, if it's like any of the other ships you've done, it will be great. By the way I hunted a convoy last night which had your pryo ammo ship and rose ore carrier as ships. Didn't sink any as I was too busy sinking the large number of tankers that were there:arrgh!: And just two escorts!!! (Both which got to see my torps at work!):D
I am continuing to work on the vessel, but I need to know something. On some of those pictures, there appear to be tarpaulins covering the forward and aft decks - is that what they actually are? And do you think they would look good on the one that I am building?

I believe for the older lightships of the 20's, 30's and even possibly early 40's era---tarps were placed on the aft and fore decks due to a active crew living on them for extended periods of time--I think the newer models post WWII they were done away with. I'm going to be working most of the weekend but ill try to research it more. one detail I know of (hard to tell in the black and white photos) was that the U.S. coast guard required thier Lightships by regulation to have the hull painted red regardless of the superstructure scheme.
As for how they will look in game-- :yep: if it can work--but i'm no modeling guru so i think your judgement on that would be better than mine.
Oh, I think I can make it work.:hmm: (or at least give it a good try). I just wanted to know if it would be appropriate.:yep:

The Nantuket light ship.

The problem with these latest pictures (including that one, is that those appear to be modern lightships - or at least I think so. The one which I am building more closely resembles some of the first pictures that were posted. The vessel is almost done now though.

AG - can you class that as a type=100 or something
If its done as a 102 it will spawn everywhere
I was planning to classify it as a 104, but 100 will do just as nicely. I was planning to save Type 100 for auxiliaries myself, and this is a type of auxiliary (although not a naval one).

Trouble with a 104 again it can appear anywhere although coastal
Hmmmm
The class=100 is a merchant anyway
Should be a naval you're right

For the early style it would be highly appropriate:yep: --in an account of the sinking of LV#71(from grave yard of the Atlantic) -it talks about the "wireless shack" being literally a shack built on the ship's deck from plywood and tarp.
I was planning on adding a small shack just aft of the second mast, and then still a tarp over both the bow and stern. I think it will work, and those are actually the last 3d changes that need to be done to it (other than moving some cables). I hope it will not look too much like the Tugboat though...
WIP Lightship. Still needs a tarp over the stern, and some objects need to be moved. Also, the bow tarp is currently part of the hull, and needs to be made into a separate object - it will take some time but is no problem to do.
Does anyone see any objects here that will cause a physics inconsistency? There are no cranes touching the superstructure but many, many CTDs have made me paranoid...:shifty:

As with all your work:up: --that is looking great--the tarps really add to it.
Not trying to push my luck but is it possible to have a red or black color hull or is that not possible with the tug boat base?
Either way it is sweet as it is:yep:
I can give it any color hull - I am already planning to adapt a red one and a blue one from other stock skins.:know: Unless there are any other suggestions for other colors as well?
Ran a test - CTD when breaking in two.:damn::damn::damn::cry::cry::cry:
I feel like giving up. This happens all the time now, and I just don't know what to do. I can't see why this would be happening with this ship and others.

I'll show them to you tonight - I have to add the second tarp first, and fix a cable.:yep:

You couldn't just put the ship in the Environmental folder, could you? Wouldn't that make it invulnerable?

 pls don't give up--safe keeper made a good point about making it invulnerable if you have to--if it is typed as 100 it won't spawn--and I don't think many people will be trying to sink these if their scripted near harbors and shoals--I plan on treating them like "on water lighthouses" myself.

A couple of questions:
Do you have any 3d objects or equipment nodes at "Z" coordinate 0.0?
What version of Pack3d are you using?
Did you reassign the "parent" parts of any object? (For instance, the parent of the Liberty Ship's funnel is the stern - hence, when it breaks up the funnel is always attached to the stern half).
Hmm, those are some interesting questions.:hmm: I will try to answer some of them, for ther lightship.
Do you have any 3d objects or equipment nodes at "Z" coordinate 0.0?
Yes, lots. But they are stock positions. I did move one object away from z node 0.0 though.
What version of Pack3d are you using?
Two versions - an older one with no object coordinates or classifications, and a newer one (probably the newest one, actually).
Did you reassign the "parent" parts of any object? (For instance, the parent of the Liberty Ship's funnel is the stern - hence, when it breaks up the funnel is always attached to the stern half).
Yes, one object - the front of the bridge (which is now a small cabin). I moved it from the bow to the stern.

Don't worry, I haven't quit yet. If worse come to worse, I may have to make the ship environmental, although I hope I don't have to.
Thank you.
EDIT - I'll check back in the morning.
I would like to announce that thanks to rowi58, the Coastal Lightship no longer crashes the game.:rock:However, there is a strange texture error when the vessel breaks in two - the bow half adopts the texture of part of the superstructure.:o Does anyone know if this can be fixed?

Hi AG,
I'm not sure but this could point to an ID conflict in the .dat files.
base ship .dat <---> cloned ship .dat

I wouldn't be able to fix that - I am no good at hex-editing.:nope:
