Rooting for the Seahawks tomorrow, but even if they don't win, I think the Saints can give the Bears a run for their money.

Thanks! The local Fox affiliate is ate up. They had their reporter dress like an Eagle fan and try to infiltrate the other fans. "Hello fellow Eagle fans..."

Bourbon Street is way more chaotic than usual.

The Chargers/Pats game is going to be great. I can't think of a better match-up that doesn't involve either of my teams.

Ah well, Philly loses. That's alright; they'll be back next year, as they are one of the most consistantly successful franchises in the league: In the same class as New England, Indy and (usually) Denver.

Until then, I will be pulling for Seattle. It should not take much to rattle little Rexie's cage. I expect to see Brian Greese before halftime.

He sucks like a hoover!!

It is the missed opportunities that you have to look at. It is the low/high passes, those thrown behind the reciever, the poor coverage reads, and the fumble that you completely neglected. Grossman's ineptitude at running an offense kept Seattle in the game, and turned what should have been a solid victory into a nailbiter. It kept Chicago's best asset, it's defense, on the field and practically ran them into the ground. No one can expect their defense to keep the opponent out of the endzone for nearly ten consecutive minutes; they need rest. You can't do that next week, against the NFC's top-ranked offense.

In terms of all of the comments about the cold, that is media hype and ambience more than anything. These guys do play on the road. Many of them played for teams in cold climates; it's really not a big deal for them (and for what they make, it had better not be a big deal for any player on any team). That being said, I prefer watching cold-weather games due to said ambience: I love watching Denver and Buffalo home games. I will be happy if it is cold in Chicago next week, as it will look like proper football weather. Something is just not right when it is 72 degrees and sunny.

Guy's im very new to this sport and learning all the time. But i dont understand how transfers work in the NFL.
Also i would love to know how the draft works. I know it works totaly different to soccer in Europe. But would love to understand how it works.
I find it great to see that all the great players dont seem to play for the team. The seems to be a great players on all teams but no one team that has all the stars. In soccer the team with all the money always gets the best players.

fred8615
01-15-07, 04:40 PM
Also i would love to know how the draft works. I know it works totaly different to soccer in Europe. But would love to understand how it works.

Simply put:

The NFL draft is 7 rounds over two days. Ideally, each team picks one player coming out of the college level in each round. The team that picks first in each round is the one that had the worst record the previous season (the Raiders, for example). Then the 2nd worst team (in this case, the Lions), picks, the 3rd worst, etc., until the 31st pick, which is the Super Bowl loser (regardless of record) and 32nd, which is the SB winner.

I said "Ideally" because teams can trade draft picks to other teams for other players, or better draft position. One year the Saints traded every draft pick they had to move up to get one player they really wanted.

Being the first pick of the draft means you have first choice of the available players, and that should help your team get better over the years. But of course, if you have idiots doing your drafting, it doesn't always work out (see Texans, Houston :88) ).

That help?

Thanks for that Fred:up:
That makes it a bit clearer. Is the draft the only way for teams to get new players into there roster?
Do the teams buy players from each other as they do in Soccer in Europe. Say For intance that the Cowboys wanted to buy LT do they make an offer to San Diego and see if that is acecpted? Or do they have to wait till his contract is up and he is a free agent? Or is the the law in place to limit the amount players you can buy.?

NFL Football coming to England

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2007-01-16-london_x.htm

LONDON (AP) — London will hold the NFL's first regular-season game outside North America, the start of an international campaign to take American football to a global audience.
"There's great history of NFL football in London, and British fans have been great fans of football over the years," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday. "We're confident that this game is going be a great success in London and will be a great foundation to play more games there going forward."
The opponents for the 2007 contest have yet to be announced, but the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants are reported among the top possibilities.

Answer to first question is no. Undrafted eligible players (3 years removed from high school) become free agents, and can try out and sign with any team they want. After a certain number of years service, drafted players become free agents too.

As for the second question, I think that unlike baseball, soccer, and maybe basketball, the NFL doesn't allow money to change hands during a trade. At least I've never heard of it happening. NFL trades are strictly for other players and/or draft picks.

Well, I was 50/50 last week, and my Super Bowl prediction has been chopped in half, so my picks are....

the NFC Championship game
Saint vs Bears: sorry Bort man, I think the Saints are the team of destiny. Da Bears are missing key men in their defense, and they struggled against the Seabirds. Bush, the Deuce... lightning and thunder. Saint win and advance to Super Bowl 41.

AFC Championship game
Colts vs Patriots: wow, I thought the Chargers would be here, and if they had saved one timeout and put their kicker another 10yds closer, they would be. But, they aren't, so even though the Colts are having nightmares where some raspy guy keeps whispering, "The Patriots are coming... the Patriots are coming...", I think the Colts will beat them. Isn't Saint Vinatieri wearing a horseshoe on his helmet now?

That's an interesting comment. So are we to understand that the BEST teams in the AFC are NOT in the AFC championship game?

Based on the fact that San Diego had a 14-2 record coming into the playoffs, and Baltimore having a 13-3 record ?

I submit that the best team, or more accurately, the better team of a pair in a single game, is the one that knows how to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them to win - both over the entire course of the game, and in so-called "big play" situations - and doesn't make critical mistakes in those situations.

The Patriots, while behind for most of the game, hung with the Chargers for the whole game, and surmounted that game-long deficit by taking advantage of a couple of key mistakes by San Diego - most notably, the fourth-down interception that should have just been slapped down, but was instead stripped and recovered by the Patriots, starting their game-tying drive and keeping them squarely in the game.

The Colts, while not scoring any TDs all game against the Ravens, played the better field-position game against an overrated offense.

Also, a little background on the Chargers' and Raven's record: The rest of the teams in the Chargers' AFC West were mediocre at best - the Chargers only lost one game in their division - and looking back at their schedule, it was pretty soft. Ditto for the Ravens' schedule and the AFC North. They each had some impressive wins over decent-to-good teams, but go look at the rest of their schedules and you'll see what I mean. (By the way, I'm not saying that the Pats' and Colts' schedules were oh-so-hard, but I was impressed by more of their wins than I was by those of the Chargers' and Ravens'.)

As for the NFC... 7 out of the last 10 Super Bowls have been won by the AFC. The AFC has been the dominant and most competitive conference with the best quality of gameplay for a long time. (Here's an interesting stat: This season, the AFC had eleven teams at or over .500, while the NFC only had nine.) I am actually originally an Eagles fan, but since moving to New England some years ago, I became a Patriots fan, so I watch both conferences with interest. By and large, I am not impressed with the quality of play I see in the NFC, even from the conference leaders, which is disappointing for the NFC-half of my brain.

My prediction for this weekend - and i never make predictions, and for good reason - is that both road teams will upset their hosts.

That's a great post timmygOO ... Boy, you know your football ...

I would agree with the soft schedule for the Chargers ... Oakland x2, Tenn,
49ers, Arizona, Cleveland, plus beating Denver on it's down leg side
twice and everybody beat Seattle in Seattle near the end of it's
schedule ... That's nine games right there.

I hate to say, "wait till next year" for the Chargers, but I have no
options left.

Go Chargers 07 and Marty's last year might end with at least another
chance.

I pick the Colts for it's great coach (except for the time out in Tennesse
of course) and Manning is at his peak ... it's now or never.

I'm starting to worry about those Saints ... I think I'll go with the Bears
for this one ... Just because Grossman can't really be that bad, can he?

Rex played average throughout but made the plays when they were sorely needed. Its Da Bears two great running backs and a defense that buckled down to suffocate the Saints that won the game, and can win the Bears the Super Bowl.

This is really really surreal for me, I was born in 1985 and I did go to a game that year but for obvious reasons I cannot recall the greatest team ever. Lol, I bet 70,000 Colts fans nearly had an accident when Reggie Wayne caught the ball, lost the ball straight up, but snatched it back. :o

So, we are both 50% :)
I'm not calling my Super Bowl prediction until the day before the game.

I pick the Colts for it's great coach (except for the time out in Tennesse
of course) and Manning is at his peak ... it's now or never.

I'm starting to worry about those Saints ... I think I'll go with the Bears
for this one ... Just because Grossman can't really be that bad, can he?

Notice I was 100% right ... :yep:

Glad I could watch both games in the safety of my own home, on my own Direct satellite TV DVR, eating my nacho's and drinking my favorite beverage (Dr. Pepper) and be a witness to the greatest comeback AFC football game ever played ... Indy 38 New England 34

What a blessing ... :sunny:

Super Bowl Sunday February 4th, 2007 Miami, Florida 6pm Eastern standard time

I've got Super Bowl fever ... I can't hold off making a pick down the road ...

I'm going to flow with my first thoughts ... Let your nay be nay and your yea be yea! I always say ...

Two fine teams with unpredictable success all year long ... Both represent their leagues in every respect.

Chicago (http://www.nfl.com/teams/news/CHI) Bears NFC = strong defense even with key players injured

Regular season Points for 427
Regular season Points against 255

Indianapolis (http://www.nfl.com/teams/news/IND) Colts AFC = strong offense with QB Manning at his peak

Regular season Points for 427
Regular season Points against 360

Predicting the first tie game resulting in overtime for a Super Bowl game in NFL history.

I figure they will start off slow (like most Super Bowl games do) ...
one touch down each team for three quarters and two field goals each
team in any given quarter, equals 21 point plus 6 for field goals = a tied
game at the end of the fourth quarter

Chicago 27 Colts 27

Overtime win for Colts with a field goal for a Colts 30 Chicago 27 Super Bowl game

Sure would like to see a football pool here for funsies ... :yep:
Winner getting a complimentry Silent Hunter IV game ... :yep:

Four days and counting to the best Super Bowl that has ever been played
None of that dull stuff with Manning and Grossman that's for sure ...
Neal is probably playing SHIV beta and writting his preview review,
but what about the rest of you ... ?

Its Super Bowl Sunday, and Da Bears are in it to win, so it's time to pull out the big guns:

Fight and Win Bears,
Do it for Halas and Ditka, Butkus and Singletary, and most importantly, Sayers and Payton. Win this game over the pantywaist dome dwelling astro-sissy Colts and their extremely boring city (I've been their many times and have each time thought, I'm really glad I don't live here:zzz:) and show them how a real football team plays, not with silly pass plays and an overpriced kicker, but with smashmouth pure muscle pedal to the metal NFC brutality:damn: . Its time to put some fire in the frozen citizens of Chicago with a crushing win.
GO BEARS!!!!

Colts! Wow, that game got off to a fast start, talk about waking up the room. Bears just couldn't generate any offense and Rex let two passes get away from him. As always, in rainy games, the back to back fumbles are great for a laugh.

HA HA HA...
The Chicago Bears-
A charter franchise of the NFL, the Bears are at or near the top of just about every page in the NFL team records book, have more Hall of Fame players than any other team and have one of the great fan bases in world sports. They also have had the honor of drafting and employing the greatest football player of all time, Walter Payton for his entire career, during which he exemplified the toughness and tenacity the Bears are renowned for.
http://www.photofile.com/Photos/Photos_Of_The_Day/06_06_08/HA18806.jpg
Also, the Bears play outdoors, on real grass, like the game is meant to be played.

Although they did win the first ever football game to be played indoors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1932_NFL_Playoff_Game), so, whatever...
