Well, I got DSL monday, and I'm supose to be getting 768K down, and 400-something up.
Here is what dslreports.com says I'm getting:
90 / 361
Your download speed : 90 kbps or 11.2 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 361 kbps or 45.1 KB/sec.
The DSL people came out here and said I'm getting 800- something down and 400 something up, at the back of the modem. We replaced the modem... no change.
They are saying that the problem is my computer. Any ideas? (XP home, BTW)

Such online tests can sometimes be unreliable. How fast are normal downloads? Try this file:
http://www.subsim.com/~subsim_mods/SH3Cmdr26.exe
Might not help but i only get a max of 550 from that link and thats slowing down :(
You could try this site (Should be incapped download speed)

If its on the PC end then its likely malware such as a trojan, virus, worm, spyware/adware, or some combination. Getting any popups, weird links, crashes, weird pc behaviour, slowdowns in non-net related stuff?
To check for the above, google for adaware SE, Spybot search & destroy, and Kaspersky anti-virus. The first two are free, the last is free to try for 30 days or something.

Speed will vary no matter what you are on unless it is Fiber Optic possibly...and even then most computers cannot make use of such speeds...you have so many varibles Adam...the condition of the Line coming into your home...if I understood DsL correctly it is dependant on Distance from a main hub...2.5 miles or something farther away slower you will get....your own computers processing speed...where you are connecting to...and the speed tests will vary results from one second to the next.....
The above link has some great patches and information you may find usefull...alot of companies you may have used in the past may have "Tweaked" you computers registry to help them but what happens when you get a new service these things can slow you down more then they help..IE Download boosters etc....
One of the best patches I have ever found for resetting a computers registry back to default and fix speed problems follows here.... http://www.speedguide.net/files/spatch.zip .... I have used it for years and as you read they kept it here because of its success...long story short..It won't hurt...many many many times it has helped me....and if nothing else it will do absolutly nothing to improve your speed and has an un-install... :)
You can read about it under there patches section.
P.S. I have over 10 years as a field tech for Cox Communications in Arizona so I won't feed ya any BS bro.I have not had to use this for a long time...but as you see I have never forgotten it.Also make sure in your browser it is not using a proxy server..unless the DSL company uses one....that can slow a computer down big time too...
Your computer generaly has nothing to do with dwld speed, unless you have a virus or spy ,or your registry is f'ed up like the person above me said by some non-reliable dwld speeders, which usually don't help to much.
I had the same problem when I got my 1024KB connection.I made a series of tests, and only 2 tests got the correct speed (1024KB down).
From the others I had anything between 156kb to 700something kb .I will try and find the correct test again ,and give it to you.
You can also make a small test yourself-find some big-ass file that nobody downloads, free lines,no other internet thing working, and start the download.Depending on some factors (like connection type ,modem ,bandwith blablabla) it might take a few minutes for your connection speed to get to full power.Usually you should get to max in about 5-6 secs ,but who knows, just give it a minute or two.
In order for this personal test to be accurate -
do it a few times and make an average
-try with some other files
-make sure the lines are clear
-try to get a server close to home, because,as it has been stated, distance will get your speed down
-make sure you are not using any programs that might interfere like messengers , sharing programs or other downloads;
You can also have a friend with a good up speed host it for you ,or host it on some site and download it then.
Ah here it is -I've made it a few times myself and it gets an average of between 956 and 1024 up which is accurate.Try it and see the results.

My dwld speed is about 110-120 kb average .Yours should be something like ... 80kb if I'm not mistaking ,or somewhere close to that.Mind you, some file sites are clogged up and you can't get more than 30kb download,so don't be discouraged if on some occasions you will get really low speeds on some downloads(for example on gamespot ,when downloading some patches for IL2 ,on some patches i got no more than 20kb/s and some were fixed at 100kb/sec )

SpeakEasy is the one I have been using....
I reformatted last night and I am still getting slow speeds. I've run Spybot and Ad-Aware for years. ZA pro and Avast aswell.
The DSL people came out here and said I am getting speeds over 800 D/L at the back of the modem (acording to the tester thingy)
The really strange part is that my upload is way faster than d/l. I'm getting very close to what they claim I should get upload. D/L speeds are slower than 56K sometimes.
Maybe they are working on the line or someone else is getting his net connected in the area. That might cause the problem.

:hmm:
If the modem is attached via USB try a different USB port. If itīs via LAN cable and your modem has more than one port (mine has four) try another port.

If its not USB you could try another ethernet cable as well. By the way, are you using just the modem or a router as well?

Well, there is a ActionTec DSL gateway... That is where the phone line plugs into and the ethernet cable comes out of and plugs into my onboard eathernet card.
They guy came out and said the phone line is delivering over 800K to the back of the DSL gateway. The DSL lines are capable of over 1.5megs a sec. It's not the lines to the house... It's either the DSL gateway (I don't think this is the problem, we replaced that), ethernet cable, ethernet card, or a software problem.
I'm going to call tech suport again...

It could be the Ethernet card, who knows? I bought a motherboard with a defective ethernet card(asus p4pe), I did not realize it until I changed DSL service for cable.
Or you can try to update the driver for that Ethernet card. To verify arm yourself with the latest driver # from your respective MB company and verify your version you have.
Go to the "control panel" >> "System" >> "Hardware" >> "Device Manager" >> Network Adapters
Than click on the appropriate card to get the info you need, if you have an older driver version it's a good thing to update it no matter what.:yep:

Okay, I got them to come out again and they said it is the lines to the house. They have to bring a bucket truck out here tomorrow and find the problem.

Could very well be a gateway issue. I used to do tech support for one of the big US cable companies (and I still do, but different company, Canadian customers now, and I've since moved away from the internet side of things) and we could remotely do line quality tests, and if everything looked good there and the customer had a modem & router we'd have them bypass the router; most of the time that would fix the problem (ie: incorrectly configured or faulty router but no problem with our equipment or cable line), and a gateway is only a modem + router in one. If there was still a problem then we'd send a tech out since they could do more on site, and more accurately, than what we could do remotely.
Another thing I'd try if I were the guy on the other end of the phone you were speaking to would be to use trace route and ping to pin down the bottleneck by doing the following:
click start, click run, type cmd (in xp or win 2k) and in the command line window that comes up type and then hit enter the following:
tracert www.google.com (http://www.google.com)
You'll see a series of hops and a time in ms between each hop. The first hop in your case will be an ip in the form 10.xxx.xxx.xxx, which is the hop from your pc to the gateway. That hop should take less than 10 ms and if it doesn't, then there's a problem between the pc and the gateway or at the gateway itself. You can also use ping to check for packet loss:
ping www.google.com (http://www.google.com)
Useful commands to know for troubleshooting connectivity issues and they're the bread and butter of internet tech support.

Wow! :o I copied that picture to show my son your DL speeds that is friggin incredible - reason why i wont yet change over to broadband even tho i get an email every second day from my internet provider on the reasons why i should change over - :nope:Nope. We new zealands would kill for DL speeds such as yours. We have one of the lowest DL speeds in the world, their was a investigation into Telecom early this yr and they admitted that they were not giving us the best DL's speeds we were paying for. We are told by 2008 our dl speeds will be up their with everyone else. Not long after that statement YouTube was bombarded with anti Telecom commericals where Telecom tried to sue YouTube in showing them and failed of course. But our govenment has open the doors for other telephone companies to start up bussiness here so telecom are now panicing. They were our only phone providers.
Thats the only site I can get those sort of speeds from (as a rule) normally just depends on the server i get files from.
The thing that bugs me is they (ISP) off us all these wonderfull download speed yet "crappy" upload speeds compared to them.
Such as my ISP - 10Meg down but only 384K upload.
There is talks of them increasing the down speeds to somewhere in the region of 18-20 Meg
, personally I'd be happy to stay with 10 meg down and increase the upload to between 1 and 2 meg. Would make sending the kids videos to the grandparents a LOT quicker :)

Okay, I'm on now... It was a bad card in the line. I'm running at 1.5megs a sec untill tuesday, when they are going to replace it. About 1 meg up.
I get about 160K down on a normal d/l
