Hi all,
Yesterday I installed this addon ( U-Boat: Battle in the Mediterranean ) (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=95545).
I have been experiencing random pc crashes ever since. My pc would reboot by itself randomly during the game but *every* time I was playing SH3. I noticed that ..the pc would restart...my xp logo appeared and it would restart again...even 3 times in a row.
I thought I had a virus. I ran 2 thru scans with my antivirus and I was clean. I even scanned my pc with online web scanners.nothing.No spyware either..
Any of you know how to go about this ? I have a p4, 2.66, 512 ddr ram and a fx5200 with the latest drivers.
any help appreciated

Hello,
Thanks a lot for your response.I was reading this addons thread and noticed many ppl complained about it.As a matter of fact Trendmicro online scanner did find a big brother pest but I thought I got it somewhere else. I am going to unistall it and trash it for good as soon as I am done writing this post.I really can't thank you enough for telling me.
Do you know of any addon like this worth downloading ? Or anything that could improve my sh3 ?
Thanks a bunch in advance:yep:
P.s. If the author of this addon did steal other ppls mods he's a sorry f**
So it looks like they even stooped as low as putting a trojan virus/spyware into their product.
Such a proffesional job from X1/Combatplanes....NOT!!!!!!:nope: :nope: :nope:

Download one of the supermods in the mods forums
Grey wolves in my choice but try NYGM and Uboat war ace as well
Each to their own and of course - they are all free

Hah, I almost said you deserved to get bugged because of buying that crapola. But I didn't, did I?:D If there's a cause to be sarcastic, I said the damn pirates themselves (XI) deserve all the bad rep they can get.
Mods? Mod forum and lookie here
http://u-boot.realsimulation.com/
Just in case you didn't know already.
Ye gawds..what sort of lunatics are these X1 people..? bad enough that they use other folks hard work...but to include malware/trojan/spyware in the product aswell is simply abusive

---------------
I found out about how bad this "addon" was yesterday. I thought it was good because in the u-boat whatever thread a betatester said it was good. Then my pc went crazy so I registered here and found out what the truth is.live and learn.
I would have deserved worse than a trojan if I *knew* what I was doing prior to installing it.:damn:

Yeah, don't sweat it. These things happen, although I've never heard a game having bugs of this sort right out of the box. Good thing you posted and asked- a fair warning to anyone considering buying it. It's just that XI pulled the same stunt (minus trojans) with their Seawolves ie. stealing other people's mods and then some, making people here rather tetchy with anything XI related.
Happy sailings.
Oh, and welcome

Is there anyway to stop them ? They sure belong sued not only for theft but also for infecting people with their trojans.

Probably not for using freeware mods for profit. Ubisoft has the copyright's and decides what to do with it. They seem to have given XI permission to do what they want, although there was some discussion during the Seawolves farce that they could check their policies. Well, nothing happened so it looks like we can't do much about it, except inform retailers of the true nature of these 'add-ons'. Seemed to work quite well with Seawolves, several large outlets declining from offering it but I doubt people here will want to go through that ordeal again.
Only way to get them in real trouble is if it can be proved that the add-on and it's extra gifts damaged your computer. They'd have to compensate, their credibilty would take a quite a blow but in the end, they probably just fix the problem, say how sorry they are and continue their merry piracy. Money talks, BS walks.

To be honest, I checked this add-on last week, everything works fine,
but is hard to say about Your problem, can be many reasons, hardware
and software related.

what sort of lunatics are these X1 people
AFAIK 'these' are only one: X1 Owner/whatever Steffen Trombke.
He's 27 or 28; judged by his emails and postings on several fora (well....where do I have the database with his various nicks...?:) ) he's most of the time very successful in hiding his bright mind behind some kind of 'fuzzy' logic and all but elaborated speech.

Hmmm, this add-ons (Seawolves and Meditteranean) are made by
Combatplanes, not X1, this is the same company ?
I thought X1 is only distributor......
Just courious...

Correct. Combatplanes "created" (although it sounds more like "compiled") the add-on and X1 is the publisher/distributor, at least in Europe (there's other distributors for other countries - ie Seawolves was distributed by Take 2 Interactive in Australia). The arrows should therefore really be aimed at combatplanes, not X1...unless people want to shoot arrows at all the other distributors as well?
But then Steffen Trombke and his many aliases did bring the X1 attack onto himself.
BTW, there may be an influx of Aussie noobs here soon as since 22 August, SH3 has been relegated to the "budget bin", costing a mere AU$20.

Over at simhq somebody talking for combat planes said they know nothing of trojans and they did not steal things just borrowed one model.
Btw, after I uninstalled the addon sh3 wouldnt work anymore and I had to re install the sim.Even reinstalling didnt help much as I was getting random restarts again and also some nfts.sys error (basically nfts.sys was causing some error). Any of u had nfts.sys errors ?
I went to the official symantec site and did the security check. It found a maccess trojan.all other avs reported nothing. Not sure where I caught that. I installed the sim again and patched it to 1.4b and played for 10 mins.no crash yet.

I enter the name of the file and as i was hovering the mouse on the save box my pc restarted.what a pain. Do you know anything about this nfts.sys error ? It happened only when using sh3...

nfts.sys error ? Not ntfs (NTFS is one of the WinXP file system, You possibly know) ?
If "nfts" could be RAM memory or HardDisk, try google, too many possible answers.....
EDIT: "It happened only when using sh3..." - bad blocks on hard drive ? Mayby just coincidence...

stary,
EDIT: "It happened only when using sh3..." - bad blocks on hard drive ? Mayby just coincidence...
I would rule out coincidence. It happened again last night. I played 1 hour or so and then sh3 crashed my pc.I never had that prob ever.I scanned my pc with a few antiviruses and antispyware progs and ,now, I am clean or ( should be). I did a scandisk and all is fine.
The only thing I could think of now is this. I installed :coursesolver_sh3.zip,ail sky mod V2.rar and bearings.zip. Could those files have anything to do with my crashes ? No idea.
Any idea/help welcome:yep:

Ok, I'll say it if no 1 else will. Your SH3 and U-Boat: Battle in the Mediterranean problem, is this - "U-Boat: Battle in the Mediterranean" is the problem. I'm surprised it even installed let alone run!
To put it bluntly you have been RIP OFF! Good luck on getting a refund.
As to the NTFS errors and the Virus's you now seem to be suffering, if I didnt know any better I would have said that the damn U-Boat: Battle in the Mediterranean has some how realy suffed your PC up. It wouldn't surprise me tho, Ive had programs that on removal, all manner of crazy stuff happens (mostly with game demo's), from a bevy of virus's to Registery corruption and indeed the odd NTFS error. Some times the only solution is a format, but thats your last choice. I see that you have done all the normal bits as 1 would expect, I'd also do a reg fix and clean just to be sure and see how you go. If the damn thing still acts up you may indeed be looking at a format. 1 last thing tho. The best AV program I have ever found that detects and kills more virus's than I have ever seen any other AV program do, plus its comes with a written guarantee is NOD32. I cant recommend this program enough. I was an avid user of Nortons untill the day my PC would just not function correctly. I updated an ran Notrons for over several months trying to get it to work right, and it always gave my PC a clean bill of health, but I knew it was for from so. I looked around for a new AV program and I happend on an idea, I'd see what all the banks and big company's were using, it was NOD32. I paid for it online (good price too $70AU odd for 2 years) installed it and ran it. 463 virus detected and killed later I'm a happy chappy an so is my PC!

I have jv16 powertools and the registry gets cleaned every time my system restarts.I have Nod32.The av is light on resources and good in general but it did miss the maccess trojan .
I don't know if it is hard luck but ever since I installed ( and uninstalled) that darn addon My sh3 crashes my pc randomly.sometimes after 30 mins sometimes after one hour.thing is its annoying when ur well into a mission and u spent a lot of time on it.
My pc restarts only when I play sh3 tho.:o
Where on your system does the nfts.sys file reside?
Is it in system32 folder or elsewhere?
God, this is gettin' real ugly this time round! :x
First the shameless "borrowing" of Sergs and other Modders stuff...worser than the first time with Seawolves, and now the trojan.:nope:
I wonder why people even bothered to buy it!
I mean, everyone who frequents this boards here should know better!:damn:
Ok I expected a few people to buy the CD just to check it's real content! But that some folks bought it to play it, is simply sad!:shifty:

A, sorry that your problem is an excuse for a few to vent their dislike of Seawolves rather than your trouble.
Since I beta tested the Med (I have never had the first one) the only times I had CTD was when they would send new stuff too often and my install became somewhat patched.
Once they sent a new CD it all went fine. I have the new complete one now and have never had a Trojan Horse or a CTD.
I would suggest you try a new install with it patched to 1.4 then put only SW-Med in and see what happens.
Don't stop trying you will find it and what you learn will be a help to others down the road.

This is an extrapolation but, I had a problem with a program's calendar. I found the .ocx file for the calendar control was in two places. I renamed one to .bak and the program was happy. The c:\cmdcons one seems to be a canidate to rename. To be on the safe side, copy the file to off box storage - floppy, cd,...
It may not help, but shouldn't hurt. I've seen some strange fixes. I had a MS application's installer hang up and the solution was to unplug my machine from the network.
Hope it helps.

I doubt X1 or CombatPlanes were responsible for this trojan horse. This gentleman didn't say where he downloaded the addon from maybe they are the ones to be contacted. :hmm:

Just departed the city of Constanza at the Rumanian coast, and my orders tell me to go to AM74???? Do they want me to go from the Black sea to the south of Ireland on patrol, then return to Constanza???? Yes, actually thats what they want me to do, according to my orders.....

Think whatever you want.I have the original thing. My gf gave it to me(a present).
The way I see it is this. I always have processguard on.pg prevents any *.dll injection unless u "allow" it.I had no prob till I installed this add-on.Nothing, nada zilch.Since the addon thing was the right one(legal copy )I turned off processguard and allowed the software to do its thing. Hell broke loose.Random crashes and all that(never had that prob b4).Mind you this happened/happens only when playing sh3....
Now, no prog is allowed to fool around with my system cuz processguard does its job.The only time I switch it off is cuz I think its an alright proggi like this addon.
I am not the only one who got probs because of this addon.I have no idea whats going on but we cant all be wrong.Of course the betatesters didnt get infected. Why would the author of the software infect its betatesters ? It would make no sense..
No matter what crap u come up with you're evil.
Anyway, the "venting" is for another, entirely legitimate reason. :know:[/quote]
aresenic, I didn't mean to imply that you pirated the game, just that some software is available for download and maybe some hacker got into that server and hacked some of the software so that the distributer should be informed. If you say you got the original disk, well. are you sure it is the source of the problem?

There are no grids in the Black Sea so you could be assigned to anywhere. I got that when I played it as well and made a big joke with Combat Planes but he said there was no way to add grids. The BS is small enough that fuel is no problem and any career there will not get much need for major renown.
In WWII most of the Russian ships never left port or were bombed in port by the Luftwaffe. The TypeIIs sank 20 ships for 47,000 tons in the almost two years of war in the BS.
I think the desire to fight in the BS will quickly deminish in a few patrols. IMO
Contrary to what anyone thinks they did not make a clean version for me and then put a virus on paying customers CDs.
I know from countless freeware packs I made in CFS3 there were always a few that swore I made a serious mistake that caused a CTD (that others did not have) until they found what they forgot to do or had done themselves without realizing.
BTW, I don't turn off AVG when I install something.
