FFG Sonar Tips...

Just looking for a few tips and tricks when using the sonar on the FFG. Such as when do you first activate it? How much do you use it? How often do you use passive sonar?

It depends however, with surface ships, stealth isn't their strong point, so the plusses and minuses of using active sonar aren't the same as for submarines. The other advantage is that they're typically faster than submarines, so you can outrun them if you have to. Submarines have to get close (within about 10Nmi) to use a torpedo, and the one thing you DO NOT want them to do is get close. For that reason I almost always leave the hull sonar on active if there's a submarine threat anticipated.

I do use passive sonar, just not the hull array. The towed array often provides longer ranged detections than the hull sonar too.

I guess the real trick of running the FFG effectively is being able to keep an eye on all your sensors simultaneously.

About what range do you have to be in to detect a sub usually? I can't seem to ping Kilos at the 20 nm distance. I am clicking show truth on and off just so I can test it out. Even when I know I am within the 20nm range it does not seem to get a ping. Do you generally need to be a little closer?

I think so. If you're talking about active, it depends on the sub and the aspect he presents to you. It also depends on the environment. KILOs are particularly problematic, though. They are sometimes undetectable at ranges as little as 2 NM. I don't generally expect better than 5-7NM with them. None the less, if the KILO is skillfully piloted, your hull array is probably your best chance of finding him.
