View Full Version : Possible to go beyond 16km view?

It's been a while since I played around in SH3 and forgotten where I was at.

I'm using the 16km dark and have edited it to fix the "EarthRadius". Also months ago, I edited most the weapon ranges to more realistic levels.

Now I've got my Battleships shooting at the full range of my view range.

The thing is, a ship will pop into view around 17km on a clear day, though it doesnt start off as a small smoke stack, it just pops up. Through a fog that isnt there.

When looking at the horizon, it looks perfectly fine, like the sky touches the edge of the earth, without a fog in-between. It's like I can see further than the ships are viewable, if that makes sense. I can see the horizen, but ships dont show up that far back.

Forgive me, for asking something that's probably been asked a dozen times, but when I get time to do some modding every few months between work, I have to play catchup as everything changes so fast. (New forums too) So wondering if anyone has gotten any further with this or if the Atmosphere 16k v2.0 is still the only one.

Some great stuff being done still. I finally got the HMS Hood. Very happy about that. Can't wait to get my hands on those night light ships.

Thanks in advance.

I think it may be possible. But won't it be a little irrealistic ?

I mean, on a clear day, at the surface of the sea, the farest you can see is about 10 NM. This is what the atmosphere V2 is about.
You're right, we should onlsy see a little bit of smoke but, increasing the view, IMHO, would be a mistake... ;)

The problem also is that the game doesn't render objects or models beyond a certain range!:hmm:

True but its something like 30+KM it starts to render
I have picked up a ship in the English channel at 31km - by rotating periscope and pressing the "L" button I managed to pick up ships in Dover harbour
But its always been my experience the further you can see so can the AI

What I've been reading is ships spotting smoke on the horizon at over 34000m (over 18nm) , but not being able to tell what it was. Now this is ships, with a much higher position above the water. So sure in a Sub might not be so far. Though ships were already firing at eachother at those distances, before the help of Radar guided guns.

Though at 18000m when the ships pop-up out of the distant fog in SH3, they are already large enough to see quite well. With no sign of smoke first. All you can do is lock the periscope on them first.

I'd like to increase the view range to somewhere near the rendering limits of SH3 if possible. While this may allow the AI to see me as well, this is something I can tweak later.

Any tips on where to start?
