View Full Version : Getting WAA range in baffles

I just got back from a multiplayer multistation dive. I was doing sonar, had assigned trackers to the mirror and real contacts on the TA for a sub, and had my helmsman turn to resolve ambiguity on the contact. Helm turned us too far resulting with the real contact going into the TA's baffles. For some reason, I was able to get WAA range on the contact while it was in our baffles. Obviously, we were in the seawolf.
Is this an already known bug? I have not had time to try reproducing this.

Towed array.

The range is determined from the WAA (wide aperture array), not from the towed array or sphere array, so maybe even when the contact was in TA baffles the WAA could still see it, because its baffles are different? :hmm:

Exactly.
The 3 sonars (bow, ta, and waa) have different baffle zones.
The WAA is on the hull of the Seawolf, so the baffles of the Towed Array are not related to the WAA's functionality per se.
From pg. 87 of the manual:
Submarine Flank Arrays
A flank array is a flat rectangular panel on the side of the sub.
Seawolf Wide Aperture Array (WAA): The WAA consists of three flank
arrays on each side of the Seawolf class submarines. In S.C.S. -
Dangerous Waters the Seawolf’s WAA can provide rapid passive
localization (RAPLOC) for sonar contacts within a 15 kyd range. See
Seawolf Stations/Seawolf Sonar Suite/Seawolf Broadband Station for
information on how to use the WAA to determine the range of a contact.
