No, please don't yell at me. I know topics like this are old.

I have read the FAQs. I have read the threads covering this topic. But I am too new to this game to really be able to fill my own needs.

I am looking for a few mods to make the game more enjoyable. I am not talking about monster mods like GW or anything - I already downloaded it yet I won't install it for a while before I am a real SH-pro.

What I am looking for are small improvements. For example better visibility of flags to recognize my possible enemies a tad earlier. Right now, I almost have to ram them before I can tell their nationality.

Better instruments would be fun as well. Especially the compass is hardly usable.

And it would be great to be able to access torpedo controls from the periscope view.

I guess you name it - small improvements to make a great game even better.
Which ones would you recommend?

Unluckily I do.
This certain thread and Community Manual were the first two threads I was reading, yet my questions concerning "my" mods still aren't answered.

I know what you're thinking. My parents still insist I wasn't an easy child...

This is a good page for mods:

I dont know where to fin the mods you are asking for, but if you want some eye candy, download better damage textures mod, and fubars skins. You`ll probably need some harbour traffic too.

Also, you should get the mod enabler, so you dont have to reinstall the game to change mods.

OK,
I would get SH3 CMDR, JSGME, SH3Gen, SH3Weather, and GW1.1a for starters. Next I would get the slide out (4) dials by ?FABsale. I'm not sure of the exact title, but it will solve your compass problem.
Play with these for a while, and after you have them figured out, try NYGM Tonnage War2.01. (This is more technical and you should play for a while before you try it.) You can do a dual install, and play both
IUB 1.03 is also very good; you can do a triple install and play all three.
Most of the remaining mods are for appearance and "eye candy"

I'll have a look at those.
How about my flag-recognition problem? Any suggestions?
Or any other general ideas which mods one must have?

There is no way to ID flags at night. Later in the war shoot at anything that floats, and you will probably be OK; early on, you may have to trail a target for hours until dawn to ID them. If you use the lighted ship mods, the neutrals will be lit up, but not all ships finished as yet.
In GW and NYGM there is a pull down flag chart to help you in IDing the ships in the periscope and uzo screens.
I used Timetravelers minitweaker to increase the magnification to 10X in both the periscope an uzo screens and to 20x for my binoculars. This helps ID the ships

Well I don't know how realistic and difficult you want the game to be, but if you use the external free camera view (I know it's cheating), you then can quickly zoom in and take a look. ;)

With the flag recognition..you can do a couple things.

(1) You can increase the zoom level of the scopes,UZO,as well as the binoculars.I have my binoculars,UZO as well as my Observation scope set to 10x and it really helps in the ID'ing of ships from long range.

(2) For the nighttime recognition you can use the Enviroment Colors mod in this thread..
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=96258
It adds a sort of moonlight at night when there is a moon making night recognition alot easier as well. Also has more that makes the enviroments alot better.

There are many instrument mods out there that make them much more readable.Just have to try them to find which you like the most.
