As an avid subsim fan and addict, after playing SH3 for a couple of months now, I have decided that it is a satisfactory subsim and overall adequately fulfills my submarine simulation cravings. BUT, it would possibly elevate the standing of this game for me to "pretty fun for not being Aces of the Deep" if I could read the markings on the map tools (in particular the protractor, and ruler help tools --displaying the bearing).
I simply cannot work like this any longer using manual TDC. I cannot stand the squinting and crick in my neck from leaning forward any longer. I don't mind hurting my brain in a game like this, but the physical pain from trying to read these blasted map tools is really making manual TDC a tedious painstaking chore instead of just mathematical, and tactical pleasure. Is there any way to enlarge or magnify the numbers/markings on these tools so I can read them better??? Has anyone modded this? if not, I am desperate enough to try it myself, but have no clue where to start....any suggestions, what programs or files to use/edit?? I am on my knees here..

Sooo, cant take a bit of physical discomfort ay? What kinda sissy are you? Anything that increases the amount of physical pain just adds to the realism. Me? When I play I quit bathing, soak all my cloths in diesel oil and only eat rotten food.
Common man, get with the program here. :p

The last time his sub got sunk he killed himself.
Fortunately, it didn't take.

UGH!! I knew someone was going to bring up realism about this, but I have thought of that too and tried to reason with myself into accepting the squinting and crick in my neck for the sake of living out SH3.....but I would think that the plotting tools were easy to read in real life (at least as far as making out what the numbers and markings on them were)...only possible exception could be at night maybe but I would think they would have put sufficient lighting for the tools since the plotting of targets is kind of an important thing to get right... oh yeah, and let me get this joke out of the way so I don't have to read it later on:
"maybe it is part of the sabotage system with SH commander--those brits have thought of everything, someone must have replaced the real protractor with a specially made made one with rediculously small numbers to make it hard to plot targets...bastards.."
ok that said:
does anyone know how one could go about tweaking this to enlarge or sharpen the numbers? anyone done it...? I am sure I am not the only one who has problems reading the tools.

I bought a larger monitor, 17" to 20". The difference is amazing and my eyes are thanking me.

STBW, I'm not picking on you but try this. Get a pair of those 1.25 or 1.50 reading glasses from Wal-Mart in the Pharmacy section. Cost is under 10 bucks I believe. They shouldn't hurt your eyes even if you don't need them but only use them playing SHIII. I use them for reading and pc games for the small stuff..... damn farsightedness has struck me at my young and tender age. ;) Better than paying big bucks to the eye Doc and they work just as well. Give em a try, they help me see that small stuff a lot easier.
And a larger LCD monitor helps too... I went to a 19"LCD and what a difference over a 17" CRT.

I have a 17" monitor (its a dell trinitron) and it seems big enough and I can see everything else fine... but I think the numbers are just too small and not black or sharp enough...i wouldn't think it would be hard to tweak those graphics as people have done wonders in other areas of SH3 and for me it is the only option since I don't have $$ to buy a 48" monitor. anyways I can read them if I get close to the screen (like 10 inches or so). got to be a way to mod this...
GT182:
ok I could try that but I am near sighted and wear glasses too. but I am still confident this can be modded...just a matter of finding out which files to mess with and what program to use,, but I hope someone has modded it already...
have you seen the 4 dials slideout with the huge wonderful easy to read compass for course setting?...if someone could do something similar with the protractor/ruler help tools that would make my day and SH3 as I said "pretty darn fun for not being Aces of the Deep".

Maybe if someone can have the map tools enlarge as you zoom in with your map view . Start off with the tools regular size and progressively become slightly larger as you zoomed in .

sure I'll take that, but now how is it done? and can/will anybody do it? i can spend some time messing with the idea but i don't even know where to start.

What do you have against Eye Doctors? They have to make a living too.

A bigger monitor would be cheaper than an eye doctor.:p
I'm using a 19" monitor, and I can see where I might have trouble with a smaller one too. I wear bifocals for everyday use and special glasses for computer work, but I still like having the bigger monitor when I play games.
I don't know what to tell you about your problem, since I don't know how to mod stuff like image size, but I hope it will get resolved.

Friend, you will never regret getting at least a 19" monitor (lcd). You'll never look back. I promise. Since you probably have a dell computer, they actually have some very good monitors, especially the ultrasharp lcd models.

actually I have a custom AMD Pc from Buyxg.com--FYI, don't buy from them though, unless you enjoy conflict and hassles...they don't really "have it together"....but it was cheap!
I got the monitor off of craigslist for $30 to save some dough. I guess I could start saving up for a 19" LCD, but I am just surprised that more people haven't had this problem of not being able to clearly read the numbers on the protractor/ruler. Is it really that much clearer on a 19" LCD?? they are just so small... but in the meantime if anyone knows how to mod this or can tell me where to start looking or what programs to use I can even try.
thanks.

I wasnt trying to be a realism Nazi. (No pun intended) Just when I read that the 1st post I couldnt resist. :arrgh!:
And by the way. I dont flush my head in a toilet to get the the wet sub feeling. I just run next door and jump in my neighbors pool everytime i hit the crash dive key.

Oh, and I have a 19 in monitor. (not lcd) and I have trouble seeing the dials and such too. Im saving for a 21in lcd monitor though. In the meantime I think the OP has a valid point. Im sure there is some way to enlargen those numbers.
Buy A Damn Magnifier !!!!

Reading text on forums/ng's is so much easier now, no longer have to lean closer to the monitor to make out the words. The numbers on the navmap are large enough to allow me to lean back in my chair and still be able to read them. If you can afford a larger monitor I would reccomend it. In the meantime, a mod would be nice too.

a what?? Magnifier?? do you mean a magnifying glass? if so then I think that would be even more tedious then already...someone must know what %$## files belong to those tools, and maybe they can be edited with photoshop or one of those?? I guess I will just have to keep asking, does anyone know what the files are and how to edit them? ugh..i just finished another patrol and am going to put ice on my neck now..and get my eyes checked. if more people have this problem seeing the numbers and markings on the tools then speak up!! so we can get this modded or give it attention at least..
