Greetings:

I used to enjoy Fleet Command quite a bit, and have been eyeballing DW for quite awhile - how do the two compare? I'm looking for a gameplay interface\experience similar to that of FC, and have had a little trouble determining if they're close from the product descriptions.

While primary focused on sonar work, the game offers drop down menues on the nav map to make use of all major function (quickly engage targets or quickly set course/speed, launch helo, rais pericope etc etc)
Add autocrew to it, and it will do the dirty work for you.
However, you cant really compare it that much with fleet command, because you can only command 1 plattform at the same time.

Fleet Command and Dangerous Waters are both great games. The major difference is how they're played and what perspective you interface with them.

Fleet Command is a real-time naval strategy game from the perspective of the Admiral. You literally control the fleet or naval battlegroups from 16 different countries. In this role, you direct the major assets strategically and tell your units what to do, when to launch aircraft, where to go, weapons to use, targets to ID, targets to engage, etc.

Dangerous Waters puts you into 1 of 7 different and unique platforms. You can command any of the 688(I), Seawolf, Akula SSN, a few versions of Kilo class SSK, P-3, MH-60, or the Oliver Hazard Perry guided missile frigate. In Fleet Command you don't actually work any of the platforms sensors, other than tell them when to turn them on or off. In DW, you can actually work the sonar stations, the acoustic stations, the radars, TMA, fire the weapons and work all the stations relevant to accomplishing the missions of these naval units. You are simulating being a member of the crew or the platforms captain. You're not giving orders to launch weapons like in Fleet Command, you are firing the weapons.

Both games are very enjoyable. I recommend you get both for what each offers. You will get a different and enjoyable experience from each. :cool:

I was a big Fleet Command fan before moving over to SC and DW...

The big difference is that FC concentrates on the strategic aspect of naval warfare while SC/DW model the tactical aspects of a single platform... in FC you just really direct your assets, assign targets, from a strategic point of view and don't worry about the specific operation of every platform. DW is the opposite, it concentrates on the specific operation of a single unit and models every nut and bolt of that ship. Its takes a lot of learning to be any good.

I've had SC for a year and DW for a few weeks and I can still barely play it without autocrew... granted I don't exactly dedicate my life to learning the sim, but it takes more effort to play than any other game I know of.

If you aren't sure if you will like DW or not just go look for Sub Command... you can probably get it for about $9 if you can find it and that will give you a good idea of how DW works. DW is essentially the same game but with upgraded graphics, more platforms, and better campaign.

Last I checked there was a DW demo floating around somewhere. I think its still around and would give you a good idea of how the gameplay works, though for only 2 of the 7 units.
