View Full Version : Grey Wolves Do I Want To Or Do I Not?
I have been hearing good things about this mod and I feel like I want to try it, but I already have a very successful career going on and I 'm not sure I want to get rid of it if I'm not going to like it. What do you think?

if u have the us dvd version of the game, like i do... it might not work, i've wasted many hours trying to install it. see other thread...
I've been asking the same question, but untill now haven't heard that it won't work
with the US DVD? :hmm: Wow, that seem's a little scary. I think I'll keep watching and see if someone else has installed it with the US DVD and it works ok. I don't want to scrap my career if it won't work.:damn:

I have the US DVD and installed Grey Wolves about two weeks ago, had no problems with installation.
I believe the most important thing to reinstalling the game is to make sure that all of the old SH3 directories are removed, including the SH3 directory in My Documents. I previously had a problem installing the 1.4b patch to a reinstalled SH3, I had not removed all the old files.
I'd recommend Grey Wolves over the stock version. While it might not be the most difficult and relistic mod available, it corrects many of the flaws in the stock game and adds some new sounds and graphics. I particularly like the mine fields and sub nets which add to the realism of not being able to take your u-boat anywhere you want. Before begining your mission, you'll need to do some research as to where those mine fields and sub nets are. I also believe that Grey Wolves has reduced the number of single ship contacts in favor of convoys and has a more historically accurate campaign model so the game doesn't have that arcade feel like the stock game. Just my opinion.
there is a chart in the upper left hand corner on the map screen. it has all the friendly harbor's sub nets and mine locations.
If you are uncertain you should try it for a few patrols at least. When you're installing it you have to remove all traces of SH3 from your computer. To sabe your existing career just save the save file folder and do the whole install process and then replace the save files to where they ought to be. Youshould be able to use your existing career fine so long as it was not mid patrol when you saved. I might be wrong. But the mod is so worth it in my opinion.
I have the US DVD and it works fine over here. I highly support the GW mod and to all of you who do not have it, STOP READING THIS AND GET IT!
From the GW dev team..we appreciate all of the kind words..for those people who are having troubles, please make sure you have a clean install of sh3, patched up and please delete your saved folder ( my documents ) when installing read the instructions carefully, when using SH3Cdr ( highly recomended ) you can choose alot of options on that.....thx again for your kind words, this is why we love producing GW for you guys and to make a good game great. Load those fish and happy hunting

You dont need to lose your current career either
Just take your career from the My Documents\SH3\data\cfg\Careers folder and save it somewhere - make sure your in port when you do this
Uninstall SH3 including the folder in my docs
Reinstall, patch to 1.4b and install GW
Place your career back in the folder in my docs and away you go
I have been pondering this as well, but my SHIII is so modded and customized I hate to start from scratch again. Is it a self installing EXE, or can I just install individual parts manually?

The 1.1A is a self installer but the older 1.0 and 1.1 arent
Why not just try a dual install ?

Okay im about to get GW or NYGM any day now, Still i haven't made up my mind which one. But lets say i went GW. Can i just delete all my save games disable any mods and install GW or is a new install of SH3 vital to it running properly.
My US DVD version is such a hassle getting to work properly i have to reinstall the game 2/3 times before it finally runs. Yep i delete everything, and the registry entries, and the SH3 save folder. I put it down to my dvd drive (Nu Dual rewriter) its very sensitive. So it doesn't always install properly first time around. :damn:
Can i avoid a reinstall of SH3 and do what i mentioned?

You can try with just disabling any mods you have
It might work - I know both mods specify a clean install but worth a shot
Or http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=95560&highlight=dual+install
Try a dual install then you can copy/paste the new install so you always have a spare working data for future use
I have just one thing to say - GW=:rock::rock::rock::rock::rock::rock:

At the moment I'm playing SH3 with the AOTD-modpack, but I'm thinking about installing GW, too, as I'm not quite satisfied with AOTD. And Although AOTD's shortcomings are only of a minor kind, they slowly but surely begin to bother me. So because these forums are brimming over with GW-enthusiasts, I thought about getting this mod.
But before I can make up my mind I still need some information from people who already have experience with this mod.
The most important question for me is, how the mod changes the gameplay, as AOTD is almost vanilla (gameplay-wise) with only some eye- and earcandy.
E.g. what effect does the NYGM damage model have on the gameplay?
Does the airpower mod mean that I'm continuousely swarmed by enemy planes?
Or does "Reduced deck-gun damage potential" mean that the gun is now almost useless (please not, I like it so much :88))?
What I want to know is, how much higher the frustration-potential is in this mod, when coming from an almost only cosmetic modpack.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

I, as I am sure everyone else, eagerly await the improved version of GreyWolves.
However, it is easy enough to add the current one now and it is a vast improvement not only in visual but in game play.
Airpower, deck gun etc are actually more balanced in GW, IMO
Some, like myself, are never satisfied so must tweak our own version and this might well be the case no matter how good the next version is.
But, make no mistake; the one available now will bring a great deal of enjoyment so just do it.
You will not be disappointed and be that much more eager for the next one.

Higher frustration potential? Not sure what you mean. GW has a lot of enhancements, you should read some of the threads already in this forum. You'll get answers to a lot of the questions you are posing, mate. GW adds a lot of visual value but it doesn't end there. :ping:

Its done when its done and not a minute before.
Mods dont have release dates - because RL has a way of upsetting the apple kart. 1 must always remember that Modders do this in their spare time with tools that were never made by the original game Dev's to create the game. So asking for a release date is as silly as stating 1.

When I installed GW I accidently forgot to install one of the subfiles. Can I activate it without having to completely reinstall GW?

yes with 1.1a--just run the install exe file again and check the subfile you want.
