Hello
Im new here, but iv`e been playing Silent Hunter series since I was 8 years old, starting with Silent Hunter 1 Commander`s Edition, which had evrything that had to to with Silent Hunter, mission editor and all off it. And I was just utterly stunned each time I played it. In many ways, I actually think Silent Hunter 1 is the best game in the series, I could use the arrows to change direction, which gave me a nice edge when moving in to position to attack Jap convoys. And I loved the way the submarine REALLY SHAKED when depthcharges blew up all around me. Like you see on German pictures taken in a VII uboat while being Depth Charged, it shaked so fast and much at the height of the depth charge explosion that the captain and all the others around him, including the periscope and evrything around him. looked like they were multiplyed! That would be something to see in SH3! Which by the way is the greatest subsim I have ever played. Only thing that I miss is actually being in the engine room, torpedo room, and all other compartments in the sub. (Like in the old sub classic Das Boot! You could even see the engine go on with it`s almost eternal beat!).
In short, there`s only 4 things i miss about SH3, real uboat/crew reactions to depth charges.
Hear/see the crew react different on some of the situations.
Not exactly walking, like mentioned in the SHIV forums, but atleast be able to see the engine room and the crew, even if theyre just standing there and tickling on some wheel or something(Like they do in the Command Room)
Sub VS Sub engagements! I remember a Single Player mission in SH2, I cannot remember what it was named. But the british sub fired at me and I managed to maneuver away from the torpedoes, then I dive, and since the AI on the British sub was so smart, they already knew my depth and bearing, they fired at me straight on! and I looked outside my trusty VII C/41, and this might sound unreal for anybody of ya, but im telling ya it`s true and I stake my life on it! The 2 torpedoes the british sub fired against me, actually came exactly/almost close to my sub and just SCREETCHED ALONG THE WHOLE HULL! or, i didnt hear the screetching sound, but if anyone of you have seen the more or less NOT HIST ACCURATELY sub movie U-571, which by the way, despite its inaccuracy, as a submarine cannot be operated with only 9 men, but also its just wrong, it never happened, but still, when the german uboat launches torpedoes at them, and u hear the torpedo just lay along side and SCREETCH along the whole hull! You get the idea! So anyways I got to the hydrophone, and listened, they fired 2 more torpedoes at me from 010 degrees, I just gave the hell about the chance of getting hit, I turned on the TDC, put torpedoes to go straight ahead, 0 degrees, I turned my uboat straight towards them! I fired tubes 1 and 3, then 2 and 4. And I wait, I look outside my submarine, and my enemy had spreaded the salvoe, cuz they missed by 1 meter. So I listened closesly to the hydrophone, all torpedoes going straight ahead, then suddenly I hear: BOOOM! BANG! And believe me or not, I won a submerged uboat battle! I`ve gotten through Gibraltar, ive sneaked past mine fields and anti subnets, ive been in engagements with coward tommy`s which thought i`d get the hell out of there, instead i turn around and bomb the hell out of them with a torpedoe. But nothing goes up against the submerged uboat engagement I won in 2002 sometime, it was just utterly and completely kickass!
So you get my point! "Too deep to launch torpedoes!" it`s not right! Remove the "Too deep to launch torpedoes!", put in enemy submarine patrol route`s and grids!
Salute!
