Hi guys, you will be getting sick of me now posting but I have run into a problem. I have tried downloading the grey wolves gold patch and it wont install. I have tried downloading the 2015 version and that also wont install. I have tried looking for the silent hunter 3 patch to 1.4b and cant find that either. I have spent around 4 hours downloading these two mods and looking at how to install them and no luck at all. If anyone can guide me in the right direction please do. By the way I am no IT geek I just like to play, so if anyone can provide me with simple instructions I would be most grateful. Thanks.

Hi guys, yes its me again. Now the subject of mods, because I play SH3 direct through uplay I'm now getting to understand that I cannot use mods, is this correct. I guess I wasted my money on purchasing the game direct through UBI and not buying the CD. Oh well onwards and upwards.

Hi guys hopefully someone can help? I have the SH3 dvd trying to install and installshield is coming up with a box asking if I want to repair modify or something else and when I click an option the install closes. I have been trying to install it for weeks now and its getting quite frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

hi there jimmyc_1

sounds like you still have SH3 Files from a previous install ensure theres no SH3 files on your computer also any SH3 Mods you have unpacked including the Commander Mod even the SH3 folder in your documents folder if that has your campaign career Campaign save copy it to a usb stick then delete it now reinstall SH3 all should be fine run SH3 then it will make a new SH3 folder in your documents for your Campaign
reinstall the Commander Mod
then just delete the new one and replace with SH3 folder on usb stick with your career save on and your good to go

Adding to the above: You should also clean out your registry files to ensure all traces of a previous install are eradicated.

Hello all, I recently picked up SH3 on steam during the winter sale and done a few of the training scenarios. Now I want to add some mods. I've followed the "steam conversion" instructions by BL!ITZKR!EG. Would the new folder I made for the game files be where I put JSGME to activate mods?

If I understand you correctly, "yes". JSGME goes in the "root" of you game's directory (folder). ie: "C:\ Games \ Ubisoft \ Silent Hunter 3 ..." (hopefully, you are not still in a Program Files type directory). Once you run JSGME the first time, it will create a "MODS" folder, such that you'll have "C:\ Games \ Ubisoft \ Silent Hunter 3 \ MODS (along with Data and other folders). That MODS folder is where you put the mod(s) that you're going to use.

Hi, i've recently started playing the modded version of SH111. The problem i'm having is that after i've used my 3 torpedoes the 2 spare are not reloading, this is frustrating. Any ideas?

Welcome abroad
You have to drag them to an empty slot to reload
Make sure the crew is rested otherwise they wont work to reload the tubes

Use SH3 Commander to avoid crew fatigue

Press "I" to bring up the ammunition load out screen. Type II u-boats should begin with torps in 1, 2, & 3 and two additional reloads.

Is auto reload, in the top left hand corner, checked? If yes, the additional reloads should automatically load assuming you have enough sailors in the forward torpedo room.

If unchecked, you must manually click and drag them to a torpedo tube.

Depending on your realism setting and the number of crew in torpedo room, it can take a bit of time for the torpedo to actually move. You'll be able to see the status as it is being moved.

Some or all of this, you may already know but I hope this is helpful.

Howdy. I'm pretty new and have gotten a hold of most of the game's mechanics so far but one thing I'm having a problem with is knowing what ships I'm actually allowed to sink.

Do I just have to look up online what nations were at war with who at the time? Is there a way in game to know?

I will look into these, thank you. And yes, I do use the Type II when starting a new career, I usually choose the first flotilla in Kiel which starts you with a Type II.

I enjoy the challenge of it I think.

Hi Sugardust.

From your list are you actually running GWX? If so in the UZO and attack periscope screens, at the top left you should have a box that says "FLAGGEN" left click and drag this into the middle of the screen for a full list of nations flags and whether they are allied, axis or neutral (with dates).

I am at the end of February 1942 and I have radar now. Is it useful to detect both ships and aircraft? Does my enemy detect me any easier? What are the tips?

so radar is very useful. However, its waves the enemy is also able to detect. After tracking, it is good to mark the unit and turn off the radar. Use single scans.

Ok, so I decided to dust off my copy of SH3 again. Fresh install on my laptop, updated to 1.4.0.1. One of the first things to edit is, of course, time compression. I edit the main.cfg to read "maximum=2048" in the TC section. However, the game is still stuck on 1024 max. Now, SH3 Commander took care of this, no problem, but I'm still curious as to why it wasn't enough to simply edit main.cfg. :hmmm:

When preparing to attack from the middle of a convoy, would you pre-set your torpedoes to a specific depth to save time? If yes, which depth do you set all your torpedoes to?

I'm in 1941, and setting all my torpedoes to 7 meters deep seems like a good compromise, rather than micro-managing each individual torpedo to the target ship's draft.

Seven is pretty deep. But I'm going off of using Hsie's patch. Are you having luck at that depth ?

I am not so newbie to the SH3 GWX3 but I have lost my saves before time. Now reinstalled it and add great mods - man this is wonderful game.
I have just small question about realism. Is there such mod which lead your sub when fired most or all of the torpedos to dive a little bit more longer because of the weight? As for example when you are low on fuel you could travel faster because you are lighter? Or it was not needed to skipped some of the physic classes? :ping: I would try the sh3.exe realisitic mod but scared to not get sunk quite fast :D

Welcome!

It was always my understanding that the crew would strive to keep the boat 'balanced' at all times so I don't think the boats came back 'lighter' at the end of their patrols. They would compensate for the lost weight of expended torpedoes, consumed food stores and fuel by pumping more water into the trim tanks/ballast tanks to keep the boat in balance.

Hey there!

I'm sorry for the silly question I'm about to ask, but I can't seem to find any answers on the forums (Apologies if I'm simply not looking right).

When plotting things on the navmap with the compass tool, the already plotted compass circles are invisible using some of the closest zoom levels.

That makes really accurate plotting, especially plotting hydrophone contacts, kind of difficult, if not impossible (not to mention annoying).

I'm using GWX 3.0 with the MaGui F version just in case that helps.

By the way, the same issue occurs in my SH5 tWoS game. Is this just how the compass tool works in SH games? Can I do something about it?

That is a function of the game. The devs did that, and the reasoning is that if you have map contacts on, you can far too accurately draw things to make it "fair" for the enemy. Therefore, once you zoom in a step or two (sometimes 5x) from the max zoom, depending upon the element you are using, things will disappear. This is also why your ruler only gets down to a 500 yard or meters resolution before it either jumps up or down to the next "rounded" figure. :salute:

Okay then. I can sort of understand why they decided to make it work this way, but when using no map updates, the compass restrictions sort of lose their purpose, don't they? :D Well, back to just "good enough" plotting then. :salute:

With my VIIB in Dezember 1939 BdU ordered us to make a patrol to BF11 which quadrant is in the west-westsouth part of the Britain shallow waters. I need to take decision to take the really long way through the northern part of the land, move all around northwest Scotland and Eire to arrive the destionation quadrat and after patrol go back with slow amount if any of diesel :k_confused: or to try spare so needed to the Reich diesel and pass at least at sailing out through the English channel where I could be easility detected and hunted :ping:. I remind myself that before years without any mods expected GWX3 I managed to pass through the channel and sunk two patrol boats of tommies :salute:. But now when know more information about the things scares appears :D What can the forum brotherhood suggest to me? Thanks herr kaleunen :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

Does anyone know of a good set of video tutorials? Reading the guides linked on page 1 is fine and all, but I learn best by actually seeing another person do things. The video tutorials that Ubisoft put into the game are mostly garbage and tell you almost nothing. Like, the torpedo video doesn't tell you how to account for speed and it doesn't tell you how to aim manually. Also, what it shows in the video doesn't even work. It shows them locking onto the stationary cargo ship, and just immediately firing and it completely obliterates the merchant. But in my tutorial, one of the cargo ships immediately started running away the moment I fired my torpedo. The navigation video doesn't tell you how to use the map and the tools available on the map, nor does it tell you how to set a course.

Your weird sound is dolphins. They are in some of the major mega mods like GWX and WAC.

I was advised to install SH3 GWX 3.0 (since the SH5 TWoS doesn't work with SH5 from Ubisoft), but the links seemed to take me to something called "Living Silent Hunter 2015".

Now I am confused as to what the best route to take with SH3 because after successfully downloading LSH3 supermod, the LSH3-EDITION-2015-STARTER.EXE gives me an error saying that it can't find a valid sh3.exe when installing it -- even though the file is indeed in the correct folder.

What game/supermod combination can be installed and that actually works? I spent hours at this and getting nowhere. I am really looking to exploring sub sims again after many years away from them. Please help.

Several years ago I downloaded a map overlay that you could pull down on the navmap, and you could gain the full KM reference from it. Does anyone know if that's still around somewhere, and if it's compatible with wide-screen please?

I have a problem here, unfortunately. I'm not keen on ARB and the other version is for stock GWX. I'm currently running GWX3.0 and Conus' widescreen mod. So I'm presuming it won't be compatible? If anybody knows a solution it'd be great.

Is there a crew file I could extract and save from SH3 or Commander that I could then paste somewhere for a future save, keeping the same crew?

Howdy. Bit of a newby SH3 player still, been playing off-and-on for about a year now with GWX. I've got manual targeting down and procedures down pretty well and I can reliably sink a ship at this point, but my biggest hurdle I haven't been able to pass is correctly identifying ship nationality. It's all too common for me to spot a ship, be unable to identify it 100% due to the honestly pretty low-resolution flags, and the fact that the flags are quite small. Also, many commonwealth flags seem to appear exactly the same unless you're directly ontop of it, due to them having very minor differences. I mostly just end up having to let the ship pass by due to not knowing.

Are there any tips to this? Maybe even a mod to help out per-chance? I use GWX with MFM. Thanks guys.

Plenty MFM ships doesn’t even show any flags...
If they are zigzagging they are enemies :D
But you have to show your nose to be sure :)
In convoys, that’s an other story!

1.) As far as I know, the Grid mod can work with most super mods as I have it in GWX, NYGM, WACS, & CCoM. I think some of them come with it already installed.

What month are you at in 1940 ? Iirc, a new sub isn't available until August at the earliest.

Hello, I would need assistance.

Is there a reason I cant seem to play with the 10th flotilla, cant turn it on in SH3 commander nor in game without it, its nowhere to be found. I don't know if its related but when I select the 12th flotilla in S3 commander and click on the info about it, under bases its says

It sounds to me like you either have a botched installation or the remnants of a standalone mod still in your installation.

You could check that you have 'Rollback automatically after exiting SH3' enabled in the SH3Commander general settings.

Thank you, it seems the issue was in the en_menu.txt, I manage to overwrite it with something I shouldn't have.
I have to say installing mods for this is as fun as playing it.

I had something similar where my patrol began at the equator and I got a base error- I solved it by asking for a transfer at the end of the mission....

The easiest way is to just copy the depth charge files from stock into your install. Stock depth charges have a larger radius, etc.

The harder way is to use S3D to edit the values you desire.


Notes: - I think the modded charges are to weak too. One of those instances of putting in real world specs vs. gameplay one imo.
- the depth charge files are found in path <game install>data\library.

On reflection of the screenie... am in agreement.

I think what happened here, KaluenMarco... is that you selected doing that in exam mode rather than training 1st... thereby, completing it in exam mode, unknowingly.

ok, thank you, gentleman.

so i pressed on to deck gun qualification. i sank the 5 ships and waited and waited and i received all of the messages but the mission would not end.

so, i pressed Esc and aborted and RTB and received no credit.

i restarted the training, sank a ship or two, rotated the deck gun to make it bear on another target and ......hang-city.

nothing could make SH3 become conscious again. i had to alt-ctrl-del and logoff/logon.

SH3 is starting to perform more like SH4. :wah:

Am going to go out on a limb here.. & say... it sounds likely, that you followed the old conventional wisdom, of going with an installs default installation path & it installed in "C:\Program files" or... "C:\Program files (x86)"... :hmmm:

On installing, it is better to dump the default install pathway, & opting instead... to create your own pathway for the install.

Have found it better to point an install to either...

"C:\Games\(whatever game name folder)

or installing it on a hard drive that is NOT under UAC terror-tory control.


After doing an install & seeing that it is working as it "should" in just plain jane vanilla stock... would suggest making a copy of it & then... zip filing it.

This can be used to replace that copy in the unlikely event that something goes wrong should you chose to mod it with any mod set for SH3. I would strongly recommend using MultiSH3 with just the 1 copy... so that it keeps the main SH3 save folder, in pristine condition in case of such a corruption occurring. :yep:



It also gives the ability to run more than 1 modded version if you chose to want to run with more than 1 mod set.... simply unzip it into a new minted game folder inside of \Games (aptly named to whatever other mod set version you decide on using) & making sure to use MultiSH3 to keep the save folers... separate from 1 another.


A simpler means, before making that zip copy... drop in to the copy to be zipped... both JSGME & MultiSH3, so that both are already in the zip & no need to do so after unzipping into the new folder set up.

Hmmmm.... :hmmm:

Odd... have not ever ran into that error message, or at least that I can recall of exactly phrased that way... "This application can be launched with a release version of Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2.1/98/ME/Server 2003 only".

What... exactly are your spec's, on your computer... if ya would be so kind as to relay... Win 10, still hanging on to 7 or 8.1... updated to 11... would be helpful info to know.

In addition, how much "RAM" you are working with... what the graphics spec's are... Nvidia, AMD... :hmmm:



I shall be frank... all My experience with SH3... has been with access of it, from both Steam... & Ubi aka Ubisoft. Have never done an install of it off of disk, not for any game... for some time now. Last time I did, was 1 game called... Axis & Allies & that wasn't too long ago. While I don't play it an awful lot, had no issues with playing it, regardless.

I know, not quite the same as here, with SH3... just noting, the only similarity it shares is it was off a disk.


Will se what I can find to sort this out so that you can get up & running with that copy you have...

Only other thing I can think of... is to look into investing a bit & grabbing an online download access copy of SH3... from Steam, Ubisoft, or some other online game source that is reputable.


Hopefully, another who has knowledge on how to solve this, would also be helpful... but I shall endeavor to see what I can find out, in the mean time. :shucks:

Okay, me again. On a brighter note, I was able to download "Living Silent Hunter 3" and it works great. Just have to figure out how to install some mods and I will be in good shape. Weird that I can't get the DVD to work, but oh well. At least I have it this way. Thanks for your help. At least I have a way of playing it with LSH3. Cargo ships

Small <4000 GRT:
Single torpedo bit forward dont hit the ships in the middle they will stall in the seas and not sink sometimes. If the seas are rough (>7 m/s winds) then a single torpedo hit anywhere will sink them.

Medium 4000<xxxx<8000 GRT:
Single torpedo on the bow section of the ship dont go for boiler room shots and shots to the funnel, they wont go down. Single torpedo at roughly near the second mast of a medium cargo will sink it in a single hit. May need a kill shot if the seas are calm (<7 m/s winds) but in rough seas they will go down even medium cargo's which are infamous for not sinking will go down in a single hit.

Large >8000 GRT
Same as Medium cargo ships, Large merchants and Large Cargo ship can go down with single torpedo hit in the bow, again dont go for middle shots they wont work if seas are calm need more torpedoes one will do.

Tankers

Tankers are tricky ships the small tanker and Nipawan tanker will go down with single torpedo
larger tankers need 2 torpedoes aimed at the stern again this all depends on the load of the ship tanker are known to be very hard to sink UK bound convoys usually carry fuel and crude and these convoys travel at high speeds
Expect tankers to take 2-3 torpedoes single hits are rare even in rough seas

Combat ships

Very easy to kill they usually have side armour and impacts are discouraged, 1 magnetic torpedo will kill any destroyer/Corvette/Light cruiser.
For Heavy cruisers/Battle cruisers/Battleships 2 Magnetic torpedoes aimed slightly behind the turrets will destroy them
Carriers same formula as the cargos stern shots with 2 Magnetic Torpedoes
Remember ! combat ships=have armour=under keel shots
Destroyer and corvette have very low keel depth they sit very high in water so in rough seas you need to set depth to very low or just use an impact torpedo skipping the waves :wah:

Notes:
Avoid Passenger/Cargo they are useless ships that wont go down even of the torpedo has 600 kgs of explosive.
Try to get true course of ship for AOB and speed, Speed is very important even 1 knot error will kill the attack
Get as close as possible if attacking lone merchants.

500-600 meters distance exact speed of ship 90° attack angle with 0° gyro angle and using slow speed setting with impact pistols you cannot miss with this combo. Wait for the ship to sink let the flooding do the rest if ship appears to be in control and hasnt shown any progress then go back and hit it again from same angle (if attacked on port side of ship attack port side again dont go for starboard side).

I've been looking at the TC settings in the main.cfg file, I can see that my RadioReport is set to 8x, however when I receive a report about a convoy or a regular radio message, my TC doesn't slow down to 8x, or slow down at all.

Is it a bug or is the game not supposed to slow down for radio reports about convoys? (Maybe to make the player use a lower TC?)

If you have applied mods to your game, and are looking in the game folder at files, be aware that the game uses the Save folder data to run most of the game, so any edits to the game files are not updated in the Save folder until
the Save data is deleted and then re-created when starting the game again the next time. Also, the game's "messages_en.txt" (and a _ge version at a minimum) have a setting for "Message Type" that influences whether the game interrupts you or not. Some messages are not set as "important", and it is up to the player to catch those and read them as they come across. :salute:

Just restarting in SH3, I see it's still in my Steam directory - yay. But I'm confused re mods - do they act against the version I have downloaded and installed from Steam or do I have to buy my own somehow from somewhere?

I have the very same problem with original DVD installation and patched to v1.4. Running on Windows 11.
The only way to run the game would be the "Living SH3" mod, but it's a politically correct version with all the unhistorical symbols. For the original game I have an old patch for historical correctness. Maybe I'll build my own patch for "Living SH3" if there's no solution to the above problem.

I stopped playing SH3+GWX three years ago and foolishly deleted everything. Now I miss the game so I am thinking about starting over. This all came about after watching 'The Cruel Sea' for the umpteenth time on BBC!
It is still possible to download SH3 from the Ubisoft website and I am guessing that GWX and many other mods are still available.
I am just wondering if there have been any new developments that I ought to try?
I am now running Windows 11 Pro 64-bit on budget desktop with Intel Core i5 CPU, 16GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics (1440x900) and 223GB SSD storage.
This is probably not good enough to run the latest version of 'Living Silent Hunter' but should be stable with the set-up I previously had.
Any recommendations would be most welcome.

Ok - you are biased but I am guessing it is too early to invest in 'UBOAT' and there can be no doubt that SH3 with GWX and few extras can be extremely realistic.
With a high realism setting, I found the ASW measures that came on line after 1943, made it near impossible to get anywhere close to the end of the conflict!

Hello everyone! Recently I have been playing SH3+GWX with the WAC MaGui for NYGM v2017A -1366/768 mod on the screen. There is a problem with the deck gun sight.
The gun barrel is not visible in the sight and you cannot trust the set firing length. When the ship is rolling, the barrel moves up and down and there is a large error in firing. If the barrel was visible, then it would be possible to catch the moment of the middle position. Somehow it turned out that the barrel was visible in the sight and it was possible to focus on it. It happened that the barrel went far to the right into the optics of the sight and hits went far to the right beyond the sight screen. If you make the barrel shorter, then hits will be in the field of the screen and you can determine the accuracy by the divisions.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem and what keys or buttons can be pressed so that you can see the gun barrel in the sight and adjust its length?

Can you guys share, your way of conducting a convoy attack?
Its good to learn from other people ;)


When you spot a convoy, do you guys try to get the convoy course?, get as close as possible. Calculate range and target speed, and ID the ships you want to target? You guys like surfaced attack during the night short or long range? or a submerged attack inside the convoy.

Hello everyone!

Picked up SH3 on a steam sale, certainly never thought I'd be playing any sort of sub sim, but here I am!

I downloaded and installed both GWX-KC and LSH-2022, my main question is what exactly is a good guideline on when to use time compression and how much? I've been using it to get to my patrol grids around 1024x, sometimes lower if I think I'm in a high traffic area, but it feels like even at speeds such as x64 I miss a contact that appears on my map during patrols, or they are to far for me to find by the time I go back to 1x.

And what about hydrophone checks? Are they useful even in good weather? Is there some optimal timing of them to make sure you don't possibly miss a valuable target that you can't see?

Finally, any point to starting in August 1939? So far, I've only gotten two pleasure cruises because of course, the war hasn't started. I'm guessing this must be available for historical reasons?
